A list of autoimmune disorders play off the doctorâs tongue:
diabetes,
thyroid,
fibromyalgia,
alopecia,
endometriosis..
It starts sounding like my family history,
Cursed through the genomes that make up every fiber in our being.
But it doesnât stop there;
You see, autoimmune disorders have a way of playing with your headâ
Messing with the chemicals,
Making you believe that whatever youâre going through is either a) your fault or b) not real.
Itâs a destiny bestowed upon children who do not deserve it.
So they congregate together,
Share their stories,
Thatâs how they cope,
And someâsome donât make it to share their story.
Some of their stories end with a bang, or with the dropping a bottle of pills, or silent;
And up until that point they were bulliedâphysically, mentally, and emotionally abused by not only those around them, but their own immune system that barely knows how to function.
So please, next time you think that someone with endometriosis is lying about their painâshove it up your pie hole and at least have the decency to keep it to yourself.
They are not lyingâone day in their shoes would prove it.
And next time you decide to âsecretlyâ point and laugh at the girl with bald spots on her head, know that she doesnât give a ratâs ass in front of you, but at home she will undoubtedly carve smiles into her skinâtrying to convince herself sheâs happy.
And next time, and yes- there will be a next time, you see the teacher yelling at a student for having their âcellphoneâ out, have the decency to look a little closer.
That is not a cellphone.
Itâs an insulin pump.
We did not choose this life,
but no one has a choice,
and you deal the cards dealt.
