It's actually pretty hard for me to dislike someone over something they've done.

You lied to me? Alright. Explain why. It was something bigger? Explain yourself, then apologize. You talked about me behind my back? Fine. I'd at least like to hear what was said. You broke a promise? Tell me why. You messed up? Well, people do that.

Truthfully, I don't care much about everyone else's little dramas. If you can explain yourself, own what you did, apologize, and make an honest effort not to repeat it, then as far as I'm concerned, we'll manage.

I've made enough mistakes myself to know people aren't defined by a single bad decision. Will I trust you as much afterward? Probably not. Trust isn't something you break and magically get back overnight. But it can be earned again.

There are very few things that make me genuinely dislike someone, and even fewer that could make me hate them. I don't hate people. That would imply they're worth that much of my time and attention. Most aren't.

This is the THIRD time I've somehow ended up stuck in the middle of two people pining after each other. Get me out of this mess…

It's getting really old that every time I end up between two people, I eventually have to explain to one of them that I'm being completely platonic, and only after they've already decided to get jealous. It's like that's always the first conclusion they jump to.

Last time, I got accused of being the nonexistent "other person" my friend supposedly cheated with. Which is especially ridiculous because I'm not even attracted to his gender. On top of that, he's basically an older brother to me. I can promise you, dating him has never crossed my mind.

Once I start seeing someone as family, that's it. My brain doesn't suddenly decide to rewrite the relationship because someone else thinks there's something going on. If I see you as a sibling, you're staying a sibling. End of story.

One thing I've never understood is how quickly people abandon their principles the moment an abuser is attractive. Everyone likes saying that abuse is abuse, that victims deserve to be believed, and that nobody should get a free pass for hurting people. It's a wonderful sentiment right up until the person responsible happens to be beautiful, charismatic, or a woman. Then suddenly the conversation changes. People stop asking what happened and start asking how they can explain it away.

It's almost fascinating to watch. An attractive woman can manipulate someone, hit them, threaten them, or completely destroy their sense of self, and you'll still find people insisting she couldn't possibly be that bad. They'll call her misunderstood, emotional, troubled, passionate, anything except what she actually is. They'll spend more energy protecting her reputation than acknowledging the damage she caused.

Then, of course, there's the man on the receiving end of it all. Instead of asking if he's alright, people start questioning him. Why didn't he stop her? Why didn't he leave? Are you sure it was abuse? Maybe she was just joking. Maybe she didn't mean it. Maybe you took it the wrong way. Somehow the victim becomes the one expected to defend every detail of their own suffering while the abuser receives every possible benefit of the doubt.

And then come the comments that somehow manage to be both insulting and disturbing at the same time. "You're lucky." "I wish that happened to me." "She's hot, so what's the problem?" As though attraction somehow rewrites the reality of what happened. As though being harmed becomes desirable if the person hurting you happens to be physically appealing.

Beauty has never been a moral quality. It doesn't erase manipulation. It doesn't soften the cruelty. It doesn't transform abuse into affection. All it really does is expose how easily people confuse appearances with character.

What bothers me most isn't even the hypocrisy. It's how predictable it is. People don't judge abuse as harshly as they claim they do. More often than not, they judge the people involved. If the victim fits their expectations, they receive sympathy. If they don't, they're questioned. If the abuser looks like the sort of person people want to like, suddenly accountability becomes negotiable.

That's why male victims are so often ignored or laughed at. Not because what happened to them was somehow less serious, but because acknowledging it forces people to let go of comfortable assumptions they've spent their entire lives believing. It's easier to pretend a man couldn't really be abused than to admit anyone, regardless of gender, can be controlled, manipulated, intimidated, or violated.

It's remarkable how many people insist they care about victims while maintaining a list of exceptions. The wrong victim. The wrong abuser. The wrong circumstances. The wrong appearance. Somehow those details become more important than the actual harm that was done.

If your willingness to condemn abuse depends on whether the abuser is attractive or whether the victim is a man, then your beliefs were never built on justice in the first place. They were built on appearances. And appearances have always been wonderfully deceptive.
