If I remember right, Karl Marx himself described a communist society as being a utopia, a perfect society which is imaginary, and most people agree utopias are unachievable, because perfection is unachievable. The issue with communism is that it doesn't take into account human greed, which if I remember right (but could be wrong) Marx himself stated was an issue. This is why the Scandinavian countries' have found a good balance to many, balancing checks and balances with equality to combat greed

To deal with the content of anon’s ask: Marx and Engels referred to earlier socialists – such as Robert Owen – as “utopian” because their approach was along the lines of “Socialism is a great idea, if we can just convince enough of the ruling class to go along with it, things will be great!” – which of course wasn’t going to work because capitalists are going to keep exploiting.

Marxism, in contrast to Utopian Socialism, is Scientific Socialism. By applying Dialectical Materialism, Marx analyzed how capitalism developed, how it works, and how it lays the groundwork for the working class to seize power.
