gosh but like we spent hundreds of years looking up at the stars and wondering āis there anybody out thereā and hoping and guessing and imagining
because we as a species were so lonely and we wanted friends so bad, we wanted to meet other species and we wanted to talk to them and we wanted to learn from them and to stop being the only people in the universe
and we started realizing that things were maybe not going so good for usā we got scared that we were going to blow each other up, we got scared that we were going to break our planet permanently, we got scared that in a hundred years we were all going to be dead and gone and even if there were other people out there, weād never get to meet them
and then
we built robots?
and we gave them names and we gave them brains made out of silicon and we pretended they were people and we told them hey you wanna go exploring, and of course they did, because we had made them in our own image
and maybe in a hundred years we wonāt be around any more, maybe yeah the planet will be a mess and weāll all be dead, and if other people come from the stars we wonāt be around to meet them and say hi! how are you! weāre people, too! youāre not alone any more!, maybe weāll be gone
but we built robots, who have beat-up hulls and metal brains, and who have names; and if the other people come and say, who were these people? what were they like?
the robots can say, when they made us, they called us discovery; they called us curiosity; they called us explorer; they called us spirit. they must have thought that was important.
and they told us to tell you hello.

OpportunityĀ Rover: 2004-2019
this morning NASA abandoned their mars rover Opportunity (aka Oppy) because it (she) got hit by a storm on Mars and it knocked her camera and wheels out and her last words to the team were āmy battery is low and it is getting coldā. I know sheās a machine but Iām devastated. Oppy is the one who discovered water on Mars. RIP oppy ily space baby
they didnāt abandon her!! they tried eight months to reach her!!!! as their last farewell to her yesterday they played her āIāll be seeing youā by Billie Holiday:

They love her so much and they tried so hard!!!

This is whatās great about NASA and itās whatās great about people. These are world-class engineers. When they sent a rover to another planet they could have easily looked at it as just another scientific tool. But people donāt do that. We can and will get emotionally attached to the most inanimate of objects. We can and will anthropomorphize anything. And frankly Opportunityās camera mast looks like a little face with eyes and everything, so why not?
So they started calling it her.
They nicknamed her Oppy.
They told her to take a selfie not long ago.
After 15 years of Oppy flipping the double bird to her original 90 day life expectancy, when a planet-spanning dust storm finally knocked her out and she stopped responding to the engineerās wake-up messages, they started playing music for her.
And after 8 months and almost 1000 unanswered wake-up messages, when it was finally clear that Oppy was never going to wake up, the last thing these world-class NASA engineers did for their little rover on another planet

Okay. Iām Canadian so I know a shit ton about staying warm if youāre new to the cold there here are some tips!(add more if you know more!)
1. Wear grippy shoes, nothing is worse than snowmelt freezing on your skin.
2.Do not wear jeans as your outter layer. wet denim is the most body heat siphoning mother fucker known to man or god
3. Have a warm drink with you. It will help. Even just some hot soup broth or boiled water will help keep you warm.
4. Wear a moisture wicking layer close to your skin so you donāt get cold from your own sweat. You will sweat. That is fine and expected.
5. If you start feeling too warm even though you were cold and like you have to take your clothes of DO NOT. Call 911. You are suffering from hypothermia.
6. Bring a blanket and a heat source that needs no electricity with you in your vehicle. You do not want to be stranded with no heat in the case that something happens.
7. If you are struggling on ice as youāre walking, stop. Get your balance and penguin shuffle to a less slippery patch of ground. Thereās usually less ice on one side of the walk and itās better to walk in the snow next to the sidewalk than it is to eat dirt when ya slip
8. STAY THE ABSOLUTE FUCK AWAY FROM FROZEN BODIES OF WATER. Ponds are deceptive as shit even with the āsolid blue tried and trueā thing. Go around.
9. Keep kids warm. They run at a higher body temperature and will feel the effects of the cold worse than you.
10. Huddling is your best friend. Even if you donāt know the person, remember youāre both cold, especially if they donāt have the right clothing for the weather.
11. Pay attention to windchill. That is how cold it feels. Dress appropriately please. I know itās tempting to dress for style, but thereās nothing stylish about losing your toes to frostbite
12. Donāt touch metal if you can avoid it. It will sap your heat and likely freeze to anything wet. Like tongues. Donāt fucking lick a pole.
13. If someone licks something metal, pour warm water over their tongue to get them free. If they yank, they will bleed. A lot.
14. Keep your ears, noes, fingers, and toes warm. Youāre extremities will get cold first and are the most likely parts of your body to get frostbite.
15. If you see someone who may not have a place to be in the cold, offer to help them find a local shelter or library. The elements, especially the cold, are some of the largest threats to those who cannot avoid them.
16. If you find yourself stuck outside for a long time, sleep during the day when it is warmest, and avoid sleeping on the ground. Stay awake as much as you can at night so you have a better chance of staying warm.
