anyway so the first time sam’s birthday rolled around after he left for stanford dean bought and filled out a birthday card, either corner to corner or something simple like “happy birthday, bitch” or maybe he filled several out because none of them seemed to say the right thing. he even found sam’s address for the envelope and everything. but i think when he went to mail it he drove by the post office several times before parking the car at the gas station across the street, putting $20 on a pump (even tho he hadn’t driven much since he filled her tank the day before), and driving to some field to practice his shot for the rest of the day. he throws the card in some untouched compartment of his duffle and tries to forget about it. i think he does this every year but as time goes on he stops writing them with the intention of sending them, so the cards go from:
