Iâm comfortable when iâm with you
Iâm not used to being loved. I wouldnât know what to do.

sorrowscarsâ:
ââŠAh?â
Thatâs about six different emotions all barreling through him in a record amount of time. He goes from hope and joy and excitement and optimism to⊠well, he wonât say heâs not disappointed, but he tries to cover it up with something else, anything else, to keep Hisoka from picking up on it. Humor. Itâll be fun. Tsuzuki hasnât been on a real date in ages, since the last time he was really in love with someone it didnât exactly go well, but he does like the romance of it all, on some level.
âAre⊠you sure?â Itâll be fun, he tells himself. It will be. They can go⊠someplace Hisoka likes. A quiet bookstore, maybe get some food afterwards, take a walk. The fact that Hisoka trusts him enough to let Tsuzuki see him awkward and shy makes his stomach get all fluttery, and he has to remind himself that itâs just as friends, theyâre going⊠on a romantic date⊠as friends.
When did his life become a drama, exactly?
âIâd like that! Iâve already got ideas. Oh, butââ He holds a finger out, poking the tip of Hisokaâs nose. âNo peeking at them! Itâll be a surprise. Thatâs important on dates⊠nice surprises. Think about what the other person likes and try to meet them at least halfway.â
There. Thatâs suitably playful and in-character for him, isnât it? Not suspicious, not pushing any boundaries. Just. Normal. Be normal.
âOh. Uh, unless you wanted to be the one that picks? If you ask out a girl, itâs better for you to pick, but I donât really know about with guysâŠâ All his relationships have been secretive torrid love affairs, after all, not things to be paraded around in public.
âOh. I donât mind if you pick. Iâm the one making you do this, so itâs only fair that you get to pick something youâd enjoy.â And Tsuzuki has ideas, which Hisoka definitely doesnât. It doesnât make any sense to stop him doing the part of this heâs apparently so excited about, when Hisoka would probably come up with something stupid by comparison thanks to their respective levels of experience here.
Nice surprises. He makes a note of that. For... whenever he decides to do this for real, he supposes. He can still remember Tsuzukiâs advice about asking Tsubaki-hime to dinner, as well... dress nice, and bring flowers. He doubts Tsuzukiâs tasteâor budgetâwould take them anywhere heâd need to wear a suit for, but maybe he can wear something a bit nicer than usual... and a bouquet of flowers shouldnât be too hard to get.
Or is that too girly for going on a date with a guy? WellâTsuzuki likes things like that, though, soft things that are usually girly but somehow arenât when itâs him. Yeah. Hisoka thinks heâll bring flowers. He doesnât know much about them, but... something nice.
Heâs got to do this properly, or thereâs no point.
âWhat would be a good time, do you think? We can meet up at your apartment.â

sorrowscarsâ:
Tsuzuki nods; yes, he knows it doesnât change anything, logically. Hisoka cares about him (god only knows why), and itâs not like it matters anyway, not when theyâre both able to do their jobs still. They work well together. Of course it doesnât matter.
And Hisokaâs hand on his arm feels good, a warm weight anchoring him to reality, a soft touch reminding him why heâs here. Stop it. Focus.
âHisoka,â he says with mock seriousness, trying to brush off the moment instead of fretting himself into some kind of anxiety attack over it. âYouâre handsome, and funny, and smart, and kind. Youâre strong and probably the most ambitious person Iâve ever met. Anyone would be incredibly lucky to have you.â
Tsuzuki imagines it must be a terrifying thought, to try again, after what happened with Tsubaki. But he also knows that relationships donât have to end in tragedy or heartbreak. Despite his own track record, he still has immense faith in people.
âBut if you donât want to, thatâs okay too. If you donât go looking for love, sometimes it just finds you by surprise, you know?â
âWellâI guess.â
He can think of plenty of rebuttals to every compliment Tsuzukiâs just paid him; I look like a teenager who was too sick to have a growth spurt and Iâm going to for the rest of my immortal life, you only find Iâm funny because youâre used to me and donât find me off-putting and rude, for some reason, I know so little about the world compared to everyone else that weâre having this conversation, I berated you in front of a terrified teenager for telling him weâd protect him, Iâm so weak that youâre constantly protecting me and all my ambitions are selfish and if it werenât so unbearable to think of being without you Iâd probably think you donât deserve to have to put up with me.
He doesnât actually say a single one of them. He knows that Tsuzuki sees the same reality he does, technically, but that doesnât mean what heâs said is any less genuine to him, and Hisoka knows how frustrated he gets by his partnerâs inability to take a compliment on the opportunities he actually tries to give one. So he decidesâheâll just let Tsuzuki have it.
But when it comes to love, he doesnât know if it can find him by surprise when heâs not sure he could even be open to it if he tried. If he really thinks about it, heâs not sure heâs even capable of it. Not like Tsuzuki is, anyway.
Hisoka frowns. Maybe this whole thing is a skill, and he just needs to learn it. Maybe itâs something that he actually can be competent at if he tries. At twenty years old now, he figures heâs probably only five years behind, or so, so maybe itâs better to at least see if itâs even possible to learn sooner than later...
âWell... you could take me on a date,â he offers, suddenly emboldened. âNot a real date, just to see if Iâm any good at it. Weâre already friends, and Iâm used to being around you, so it wouldnât be so... different.â
sorrowscarsâ:
Apparently his relationship to Tatsumi is more obvious than he originally thought, and his face flushes a dusky pink as he averts his gaze. Hisokaâs not wrong, is the thing, and itâs embarrassing that heâs let himself be this obvious, that he canât seem to control himself. Heâs never been shy or ashamed about his more feminine hobbies â the gardening, the cooking, the dancing, things that have historically been deemed womanâs work when they arenât part of a career path â but those are different than⊠labeling himself like that. If he ever talked about it, itâd be like wearing a target.
âNo, youâ you donât have to be sorry.â What would it hurt, to bring it up? Just with Hisoka? If Hisoka likes men, itâs not like it changes Tsuzukiâs opinion of him, so what harm would it do? But itâs somehow different when itâs his own sexuality heâs putting up for judgment. Then again, since Hisoka seems to know anywayâŠ
âWe⊠were.â His heart pounds like heâs just run a race. Their partnership had only lasted three short months, and in the height of the war on top of that, so maybe it hadnât counted. People do all sorts of things when theyâre in distress, and Tatsumi did leave him, after all. It had been a mistake. (Tsuzuki doesnât regret it, though. Just the circumstances surrounding it, if anything.) âWe did. I mean⊠Yes.â
He loved him. He still loves him, on some level, even if he can see in retrospect that they werenât good for each other, that the time wasnât right, that sometimes you can love someone with all your heart and it still isnât enough. Heâs loved others, too â his first partner, and then the American stranger whoâd come through Asia while backpacking, and nowâŠ
âI think there are plenty of people whoâd want to date you,â he says honestly. âIt doesnât have to be someone you work with. Iâm sure there are people in other divisions whoâd love to go out with you, Hisoka.â Or on Earth, but thatâs a recipe for heartbreak. âYouâre very likable!â
âOh.â
Some of the pressure seems to ease, but any relief is quickly overtaken by anxiety, fear, and Hisoka feels his own heart pounding in his chest like heâs the one spilling a secret thatâs so deeply buried, so rooted into Tsuzukiâs mind as a secret despite all his flirting and jokingâ
It really does make him sad, the more he thinks about it. Tsuzuki is such a wonderful, caring person, and yet heâs built this cage around part of who he is because of hatredâbullying and shame and loss and youâre a monster, youâre a freak and how could anyone love youâand it hurts to feel it, to see it, to think Tsuzuki is so ashamed just of loving people that he hadnât even wanted to tell his partner when Hisoka had alreadyâwhatâs it calledâcome out first.
He reaches over to put his hand on Tsuzukiâs arm, and that just amplifies all of itâbut he doesnât hesitate. He actually kind of wants to hug him, a little. Tsuzuki must really be rubbing off on him.
âI know that was really hard for you to tell me,â Hisoka says, and itâs true. Maybe he doesnât understand why, not really, not firsthand, but he knows, and that matters to him. âYou know it doesnât change anything, right? Youâre still the same person, and youâre still my partner. I donâtâlike you any less or anything, and I wonât tell anyone, you can trust me.â
He pats Tsuzukiâs shoulder, face still a bit pink from embarrassment.
ââI really think youâre overestimating me, though.â
sorrowscarsâ:
Hisokaâs offer hangs in front of him like a treat on a stick, luring him into some kind of trap. It wouldnât be, with Hisoka, and itâs so tempting sometimes to just⊠blurt things out. To get hammered and tell someone, anyone who will listen, how long heâs kept things pent up inside to the point of exploding. Heâs tried dating women â even succeeded once, genuinely liked her, found her funny and charming, and then sheâd uncovered the ugly truth about him and, like all the others, left.
Hisoka wouldnât judge him. He knows that, instinctively, the way he knows the sky is blue. But itâs still so terrifying to say out loud.
Just another ugly fault in him, another thing to make him different. Hisokaâs so brave to be able to speak about it. Impossibly brave, braver than Tsuzuki thinks he could ever be.
âI donât have anything to talk about.â He says this with a smile, simple and easy, like theyâre discussing the weather. Like heâs not hiding some⊠disgusting secret.
Heâs a hypocrite, and a coward. If that means that he can still stay with his friends without any judgment â even silent, subconscious judgment â then so be it.
âHave you thought about trying to date? Iâm a great matchmaker!â
Hisoka blinks, opens his mouth to speak and closes it again. That doesnât sound rightâor feel right, not when Tsuzukiâs emotions are practically shouting a completely different story to what heâs saying aloud, butâhe could be wrong about all of that. Heâs been wrong before, misinterpreted things he was sure he was feeling and... made mistakes. He doesnât want to make one now.
âIâm sorry. I thought you and Tatsumi used to beââ He finds himself gesticulating in a way that was supposed to be tactful and instead becomes thoroughly awkward, and turns bright read, turning his face away. ââtogether. I knew you werenât serious when itâs about me, but I thought... If I was wrong, Iâm sorry.â
As long as he just... doesnât hurt him again.
âForget I said anything. âA-and donât get ahead of yourself, geez...â Dating. Him. Thatâs a thought. He hasnât even got the hang of having a friend yet... apparently less than he realized. âI donât think anyone would ever want to, uh, date me, andâI donât know. Itâd be kind of weird, with someone i work with...â
sorrowscarsâ:
âNo. Youâre right, itâs probably not strange.â
Itâs nice, actually. Itâs still a little shocking that Hisoka is able to say something like that so freely, but as long as Hisoka feels comfortable with himself, and happy, thatâs all that matters to him. Thatâs all that should matter for anyone.
âIâm not used to hearing people talk about it, is all. You know, that sort of thing, itâs always been something you do in private, not⊠something to talk about where people might hear you.âÂ
Shyly expressing his appreciation of another boy had gotten him a pretty hard beat-down as a young teenager, and that had sealed his decision to not speak about it anymore. Ruka hadnât helped, either, as much as he loved her â she was always much more traditional than he was.
He wishes he could talk about it the way Hisoka does.
âI think itâs sweet that you feel that way, actually. It must mean you have a big heart.â
âI donât know about a big heart...â
Compared to Tsuzuki, at leastâheâs so loving and kind toward everyone, compassionate to a fault, so driven to ease the pain of others that he never takes the time to soothe his own. Hisokaâs not sure heâs ever really loved anyone, when Tsuzukiâs the most heâs ever even liked anyone, and when it comes to kindness... He still cringes to recall how heâd berated Tsuzuki for being too kind, too assuring, when now those are some of the qualities he values in him the most.
âI guess I never realized it mattered that much to everyone else. No one taught me that kind of thing.â Great, now I really sound like a kid. He flushes and averts his eyes, embarrassment of his own mingling with shame Tsuzukiâs projecting from his own memories. ââItâs sad that people feel like they canât be honest about themselves because of other people.â
How could anyone hate you for loving someone?
âYou can talk to me. Obviously, I donât mind either way, so... If you ever wanted to.â
