What happened to the this-protest-is-a-propaganda losers when the police started detaining and hitting the protesters (20 21 year old youth bro). They closed the metro train doors, metro station gates and the exit counters. They closed 3 stations. They have delayed railways going to Delhi by 6 hours!! They have jammed all the network in that area so nobody is able to report to the world about what is happening live. This is police physically fighting kids. No major news channel has reported about this either. Not in the paper. Not online. There are lakhs of people there!!!! They have also put barricades around to stop them. This is who the government is scared of. Students demanding accountability.
everyone who cant be at the protests physically, we have to do what we can
for those unaware of the situation, a scientist who built a free school for underprivileged kids, went on a hunger strike to demand accountability from the indian government for the massive amount of exam paper leaks that have occurred during this current government's rule. his name is sonam wangchuk, and today, on the 20th day of his hunger strike, he was forcefully apprehended by the delhi police, and taken into custody. so far, we have no idea where they've taken him, and during his apprehending, a large group of men forced their way onto the dais he was lying down on(because he's no longer capable of even sitting up in his current state), and held up screens to prevent people from even seeing or recording what they were doing to him behind them.
as a result of the latest paper leak-which was a medical entrance exam-20+ kids committed suicide. this man saw their plight, and decided to use a form of peaceful protest, that indian freedom fighters used, to fight against colonial rule. it's something that has barely gotten any media coverage, as most news channels and newspapers are tightly controlled by the government. there were plans to conduct a peaceful walk to the parliament, and before that could proceed, the police-armed in tactical gear-kidnapped a frail old man, who can't even stand without assistance. this is plain and simple fascism, please talk about it on your various social media platforms to put some pressure on the indian government for the immediate release of this man.
To all the ignorant NDA supporting activists who think Sonam Wangchuk is spreading a propaganda – disrespectfully, shut the fuck up.
He does not deserve to die for this country who hasn't given him a speck of respect. He does not.
But he is dying. And only the government and its peaceful intervention can prevent that.
If Sonam Wangchuk dies, it will be the nail in the coffin of democracy.
I was not made for….*gestures broadly at the world*
HEARTSTOPPER FOREVER [2026]
also, um.. this is a request from me to my fellow Indians who have been a part of this fuckass education system since the dawn of time. if you're reading this and are in, or are going to be in, Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, or anywhere nearby, please please please join the march at Jantar Mantar on 20th july.
this is obviously a personal request from me, and I would really appreciate it if you went. I really wish I could be there, but unfortunately I can't because I live on the other side of the country.
please don't let that man's sacrifice go in vain. please don't let him die. if he dies, we all do.
i wish i could be there but unfortunately i am nowhere near that part of the country. everyone going please take care of yourself and try and be safe. im pretty sure we are going to be hit by a huge wave of propaganda news before the 20th. it has already started.
it really should not matter if your ideology aligns with wangchuk. it should not matter if you support cjp right now. he is doing this for EVERYONE
fact check every single thing you hear or see right now. the fuckass wannabe authoritarian regime we are under is already paying off more and more social media outlets and accounts to spread hate and fake news.
for years uttarakhand has been celebrating the festival of harela: the day of green.
this year i cannot celebrate it. i am too angry. i am too heartbroken.
the kumaon region has honoured this day for generations, and so have parts of himachal pradesh. this festival was a relationship between the people and their mountains. and our government has taken that relationship and turned it into a performance and a photo op, while the real forests burn and fall around us.
the delhi-dehradun expressway was built to reduce travel time between the two cities—something the citizens never asked for, only the tourists did. this pathetic expressway instead opened the floodgates to the overtourism that has already been severely prominent in uttarakhand for the past few years. thousands of trees have been cut, wildlife has been pushed out of the only homes it has ever known, all of it sacrificed in the name of "development", as if that one word can launder what has been done here.
and now this. locals have already reported fresh tree felling inside the iconic 'saat mod' (7 bends) of the dehradun reserve forest. the government plans to completely straighten this legendary, scenic ecosystem just to facilitate a bit faster tourist movement. i genuinely don't have words for how much this hurts, and i don't have words for how much this enrages me.
so today, on the 15th of july, we are not celebrating harela. we stand and mourn it. today we observe black harela.
black harela is a citizen-led protest and mourning movement rising out of dehradun, born directly out of this contradiction, the state government pushing massive tree felling projects, like the widening of the bhaniyawala-rishikesh highway, while running state-sponsored tree planting pr campaigns on the very same festival meant to honour these forests.
today, instead of the usual festivities, we wear black, we gather peacefully, we mourn openly and publicly for the thousands of mature trees that have been cut down, trees that cannot be replaced by a sapling planted for a press photo. we are angry about the destruction of ecological zones and elephant corridors across the shivalik forests. we refuse to accept that a few saplings can undo the loss of old growth trees that took decades, and in this case, centuries, to grow.
harela was never meant to be a hashtag for the government to hide behind. it has always been a promise from the people to the mountains that we call home. we are done watching that promise get broken just so that some of the most beautiful cities of uttarakhand can be developed enough to be "virtually a part of NCR".
our times have given us more than enough reason to protest, for our right to breathe, our right to live with dignity, our right to protect the environment, the ecosystems, the forests and the mountains upon which our survival depends.
if you are not angry, you are not paying attention.
i ask my friends, wherever you may be, to join this movement and support #blackharela.
what companies who sell you anti aging stuff don't want you to know is that if you're chill about aging, your perception of attractiveness changes as you get older. there is no "wall" where you suddenly become ugly and unfuckable because in my experience what actually happens is you get into your thirties and suddenly realize that people in their thirties are hot as fuck and the "flaws" that the beauty industry wants you to panic about are a feature not a bug, and based on the std statistics in nursing homes I don't really expect that trajectory to change.
The summer between the end of high school and the start of college, I wrote a ridiculous play about pirates and put on a staged reading with some friends at an amphitheatre at a local park before a small audience of friends and family. It was never published or staged again. But I just got a message from an old high school friend I haven’t seen in years. He accidentally quoted the play in a conversation with friends, was asked what he was quoting, he couldn’t remember either, and wracked his brain until he finally remembered it was that silly play reading that we did one day in the park over 10 years ago. It made me happy. (The line was, “Huzzah for mercantilism!” by the way.)
A very tiny percentage of creators go on to be famous, but that doesn’t mean that people don’t remember little things you did for years and years. Who came up with most of the world’s most famous jump rope rhymes? Who coined some of the famous idioms we use in daily speech? Who made up ‘Jingle Bells, Batman Smells?” Somehow, all of these things stuck and spread around.
When I was a small child, I saw a high school put on a production of the musical HONK. In one song, the mother duck describes various dangers that her baby should avoid in the water, including fishing line, which could strangle him. A member of the ensemble played the role of fishing line, doing a maniacal laugh and over-the-top strangling motions, and I found it hilarious– and to this day, that’s an example I often think of when talking about how ensemble members can still stand out in theatre. The guy who played the role might not even remember that he did that, but I do.
I took Suzuki violin lessons as a kid. The teacher made up lyrics to some of the songs, and she let her students make some up, too. Now whenever I hear the instrumental of one of those pieces, I always remember these ridiculous lyrics about a skunk that we sang in violin class. I don’t even know which student invented them!
In middle school, I found a video about atoms parodying Bill Nye made by some kids for a school product. It probably had less than 1,000 views, but I think of quotes from that video all the time. They had a parody of “We Will Rock You” with the chorus, “Protons, neutrons, electrons” that I think about a lot.
I just love that this is part of human life. Our memories don’t just pick up quotes from great art, literature, and music, but little things, too.
