A reflection on some of the projects I’ve completed this semester. Listen to my podcast to hear about my personal growth!
The digital essay was one of the first projects where I consciously tried to utilize multiple modes (linguistic, visual, spatial, etc.) to produce a truly multimodal text and disseminate it "through a single medium (such as a computer screen)" (Lauer 229).
Since completing this project, I have learned modes affect the way composers and users interact with texts.
For this project, I had to learn how to rely on images and limited text in order to convey my message (timeless themes in "Pride and Prejudice") and write for audiences apart from my professors.
I've learned that the same style of writing (academic) does not work in all rhetorical situations and that there has to be a balance between detail and conciseness to prevent the reading from being disjointed or "choppy" (Hagen and Golombisky 26).
This was arguably the most involved project we completed in EN475 and my first service learning project. This project gave us the opportunity to create something for an audience outside the classroom.
I learned how to combine all the different modes in a cohesive way, as well as writing for the "real world" and establishing a "connection" with the faculty we were working with and the MU community through interviews, deliverables, etc. (Leon and Sura 61)
