“Miyako? You seem tense.”
Hawkmon was her best friend, her partner in crime, the one who put up with her antics with infinite patience and followed her no matter what. Perhaps he suspected the cause of her uneasiness - but there were things even Hawkmon didn’t need to know about.
It was not entirely a lie. Excusing herself from her study group had been the easy part - they hadn’t been doing much studying anyway. She’d had to find an open gate that could lead her to New York, and travel within the Digital World until she’d reached the area it was located in. Ken had asked her to meet them at Columbia University - a good safe spot for inter-world travel, according to Daisuke. But that meant she’d had to find her way in an institution she was unfamiliar with.
She quickened her pace. No one paid her any mind as she tried to locate the exit. Good. She couldn’t deal with questions about Hawkmon right now, not when she was making her friends wait.
Can’t believe I’m saying this, but Daisuke was right.
It had been almost two hours since Ken had contacted her, and all that time, her heart had been pounding mercilessly and her mind had wanted to lead her astray. It was silly. Ken could stop writing for months at a time, and she thought nothing of it… but then a single message from him was all it took for everything to come crashing back. Not that it ever left her.
She sighed, hoping Hawkmon would think her impatient. What if she betrayed something? What if her feelings got the best of her? What if she failed them? She had kept herself in check for so many years, it was almost second nature, but it had been months since the last time they’d met and-
She crossed a grandiose facade with a staircase to match. Then, she stopped short. At the bottom of the stairs, three familiar figures waited for her, unaware of her presence.
These were her boys. Her boys, yes. She’d always felt oddly possessive of them. These were friends whom she loved more than life itself, and she loved life more than most. They knew it, too, and they didn’t have to say it. Daisuke never failed to interact with her social media posts; he was usually the first person to do so. Iori messaged her almost every day, asking for her thoughts and advice as if she were still there. Ken had given her a gorgeous necklace as a parting gift, wishing she’d keep him in mind while she was away.
She was wearing that necklace just then. She wore it everywhere. Ken would certainly notice, and seeing him there… he looked so damn good in that outfit, that she was sure to remember him just like this, frequently, in the weeks to come.
But once her eyes took him in, once the shock of the first appearance washed over her, the clamps that gripped her mind gave way. Her breathing became even. No time had passed between them. It was Ken. It was both of them, the four of them, as they had always been. Nothing had changed.
“Miyako…” Hawkmon started doubtfully, but he didn’t have to finish the sentence.
“Right,” she said, grinning. “Let’s do this.”
Miyako might be miles away from Japan - but right then, she was home.
