Allegiance: An Introduction
Now that all the Tony stuff as died down, I just want to make an Allegiance post so that people actually know what Iâm talking about. I refuse to let it die out. So, I urge you all to check out everything you can about Allegiance.
What the hell is Allegiance?
Allegiance is a musical about the impact of the Japanese internment camps on a fictional family, the Kimuras. It tells their story. It is loosely based on George Takeiâs experience in the internment camps.Â
How can I support Allegiance?
Allegiance has closed on Broadway, but they are looking into options for touring. I would keep a look out for that. While you wait, though, you can buy the cast recording on iTunes.
What if I donât have the money to support Allegiance?
You can start off by listening to the cast recording on YouTube. Someone has kindly uploaded all of the songs. (Click here for the link.) Additionally, look up âThe Trek to Broadwayâ that George Takei has on his Facebook page. Itâs basically a series about how Allegiance has made its way to New York City. Tissues will probably be necessary. (Click here for the link to his videos.) Also, just watching all of his videos about Allegiance is great to familiarize yourself with the show.Â
Why the hell should I care about Allegiance? It obviously sucks since it closed after a short run.
Well, I want you to ask yourself what the hell you know about the Japanese internment camps. Probably little to nothing. The Japanese internment camps were swept under the rug by the United States. However, these camps impacted the lives of many, many, MANY innocent Japanese-Americans, and they deserve to have their stories told. You all are probably sick of my saying âI just want to have Asian-American stories toldâ. But so what? Iâm sick of seeing countless white stories about silly ass things get recognized while we sit here, invisible. If you do not recognize the importance of this show, continue to disregard its existence and its impact on others, and/or tell people that the show was shitty so it didnât deserve recognition, I donât know what to say to you. All I can tell you is to let me live and to let me enjoy the first musical written by and for Asians. I am sick of being invisible, and this show gave me something that nothing else on Broadway ever has and maybe never will.Â
I genuinely donât care if you donât like the show. The show may be hard to get into if you arenât able to see it or if you donât like the score or even if you just donât relate to it. I understand that the music isnât everybodyâs cup of tea. However, to see people push it aside as just another musical on COUNTLESS text posts and forums hurts a hell of a lot. Allegiance is not just another musical; it is a historical achievement for Asian-Americans.
George Takei put his whole heart into this show, and I just want people to realize how important Allegiance is. People are so quick to say that they love George Takei and his work with Star Trek, but once he wants to tell his own story about his experiences as a Japanese-American, everybody is silent. So what I can do is spread around this musical to as many people as possible so that his voice can still be heard.Â
Please message me or reply to this post if youâd like to know more! Iâm 100% always willing to talk about the show.Â
Iâve made 2 additions to this post, and I wanted to combine them all into one post!
Digital Booklet
I have additionally uploaded the digital booklet in case anybody would like to look at it. Things included: lyrics, cast names, synopsis of the musical, HQ photos, and a note from George Takei.
Some commentary and links about Japanese-American internment camps and Islamophobia in America
#it kinda hit home for me?? i dont know if thats too forward to say #but donât fight the storm reminded me of my parents #and with islamophobic sentiments idk it clicked a lot to me?? #i hope thats ok to say
Ahhh I wanted to reply to this because this musical is supposed to resonate with others who are facing similar situations like with Islamophobic sentiments. Allegiance has even been really adamant about talking about Islamophobia.
Lea Salonga wrote a post about it (though this is more general but from what I remember it was in response to the continuing rise of Islamophobia though I could be wrong about that). You can find that post by clicking here!
Additionally, after Donald Tr*mp continued to spew Islamophobic ideas, George Takei himself invited him to see the musical to see what his ideas could do to other people. Obviously, Tr*mp never showed, but Allegiance kept a seat open for him every night.
The Allegiance social media team is also still very active and has posted a good number of articles about the similarities between the anti-Japanese sentiment during the internment camps and the Islamophobia and anti-immigrant ideas coming from a certain presidential candidate.
Click here for an article from The Guardian about this.
Also, for a more direct comparison, you can click here to watch a video of Muslim-American children reading letters from Japanese-Americans during WWII.
I wanna add that I am not Japanese either, but I think there are a good number of lyrics from the musical that really could resonate with people of color in general.

More than 70 black women have died at the hands of the police in the past three years. Professor and activist Crenshaw, who coined the term âintersectionalityâ in the 1980s, is determined they will not be forgotten
When she speaks at public meetings, Professor KimberlĂ© Crenshaw has a trick. She asks everyone to stand up until they hear an unfamiliar name. She then reads the names of unarmed black men and boys whose deaths ignited the Black Lives Matter movement; names such as Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin. Her audience are informed and interested in civil rights so âvirtually no one will sit downâ, Crenshaw says approvingly. âThen I say the names of Natasha McKenna, Tanisha Anderson, Michelle Cusseaux, Aura Rosser, Maya Hall. By the time I get to the third name, almost everyone has sat down. By the fifth, the only people standing are those working on our campaign.â
The campaign, #SayHerName, was created to raise awareness about the number of women and girls that are killed by law enforcement officers. For Crenshaw â who coined the term âintersectionalityâ in the 1980s to describe the way different forms of discrimination overlap and compound each other â it is a brutal illustration of how racism and sexism play out on black womenâs bodies.

[Are we going to see the badass 80âs mall rat Jubilee or will her character focus more on her vulnerability and youthfulness?]Â We will focus more on her vulnerability and youthfulness. Sheâs still learning about her powers and developing them. Although I would be honoured to see the badass mall rat come more to life! Sheâs a kick-butty type of girl!
