Yellow magnolias burst open to spring; a revival of life as it re-emerges from a deep hibernation beneath the cold blanket of three feet of snow.

I’m obsessed with making patterns from my photographs these days. Can’t focus on much else, except dying eggs. The swelled branches with bubbling buds on their tips yielded this ‘wreath of life’ pattern. Welcome spring, welcome resurrection of life, welcome resurgence of growth, after a long winter’s nap.
My maternal grandmother wove rugs in her Anatolian village, and sold them to the merchant to make a little money. The women in the village would come to her to solve a pattern they couldn’t figure out. Women from nearing villages came to her because she could make the brightest and most vibrant reds and yellows: all from scratch, all from nature, all from her hands. She died about a year before I was born; sometimes I feel her in my soul.
