Sexy Ugly Shaggy Saturday

I watched Velma s1 and s2. I have some thoughts.

S1 is not as bad as I thought it would be. Every bad joke you’ve seen posted is there and not improved by context. But there are also some bright points. The animation looks great. It doesn’t feel very Scooby Doo.

S2 is actually solid, pretty much entirely got rid of all the edgy political humor. I love Velma and Daphnes toxic relationship, they develop their dynamic in such an interesting way this season.

Just a small nitpick, I don’t get why we got this original character “Amber” instead of making them one of the Hex Girls. I think ideally, the character wouldn’t reference the Hex Girls at all and would just be a witchy teen who serves the same role as Amber. It was still cool to see Thorn, and that they are non-binary in this adaptation.

I felt that the Scooby Doo theming felt a little more natural, or maybe I had just gotten used to these characterizations. We start to see Norville become Shaggy in some fun ways. I didn’t love evil Scrappy just because it’s kind of lame and overdone to me, but I thought it was awesome how they tied Scrappy’s villain origin to how he was developed and abandoned as a character in real life. He looked so ugly tho. Maybe it would have been funnier to see a cute cartoon dog be evil? Idk just my thoughts. The animation looked even better this season, incredible awe inspiring stuff.

Performances

Mindy is so great as Velma. Dare I say I much prefer this performance to the usual Kate Miccuci. Mindys make the best Velmas (to me). I’m not sure why I ever doubted the potential for this performance, in retrospect Mindy’s distinct and expressive voice lends itself very well to voice acting.

I think Glenn as Fred is second best, but his material is incredibly weak in both seasons. Adapting Fred as anything other than just a kind of corny, fairly smart guy usually falls flat for me.

The performances for Daphne and Norville you could take or leave for me.

If you are going to be super puritanical about the IP, you aren’t going to like this. But if you give it a chance I think there are plenty of positives to say about this show. Not entirely positive, but not entirely negative.
