Most female orcas have an average birth interval of 5 years, meaning there’s usually around a 5 year age gap between each of their calves. But this isn’t always the case! 

This is AF11 Gambier. She gave birth to her fourth calf, AF55, in 1993. Sadly, the calf died in 1994. To everyone’s surprise, Gambier gave birth again in 1995, just 2 years after AF55′s birth! But poor old Gambier was down on her luck once again. This new calf, designated AF43, also died just a year after he/she was born in 1996. 

One 2 year birth interval is strange enough, so you can imagine everyone’s shock when Gambier gave birth again in 1997 to little AF50. That’s two 2 year birth intervals in row!

And the third really is the charm, because AF50 (now called Taku) is all grown up and likely has a calf of her own, AF93.

At 47 years old, Gambier is now menopausal and has not had a calf since Taku’s birth.
