Mabel thought about what he was saying for a moment. “I’m still going to hold out. Dipper, he could be the one. I’m not gonna just ignore that.” She normally ended most arguments about her love life that way and she didn’t feel bad about it either. Mabel knew what she wanted and wasn’t going to change that for anyone.

“You should like it, Dipper. It’s good for you.”

 Dipper sighed. Nice to know that even a guy being pretty intensely gay was not enough to stop his sister. “If you say so, but I still think you’ll need to get some testosterone in you to have a chance,” he replied with a pointed look. Really, he felt bad for the coffee guy. He wouldn’t like all that.

 “So? Plenty of stuff is technically good for you. Real sunlight is good for you, you’re not getting onto anyone about that.”

Tommy raised a brow at the strange comment but thought nothing further of it. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

 The Mystery Shack was indeed a mystery but not quite what he was expecting. There were all sorts of curiosities and strange things around. Some were definitely fake and others might have been real but Tommy did not have the expertise to know for sure. He meandered his way to a shelf of old books. That the shop had actual books was by itself a marvel simply because that put them at at least 100 years old. Possibly more. He carefully lifted one up to examine it. “Where did you get these? No one has made a printed book in centuries.”

 Wow, he hadn’t just decided to run out. Cool. Usually the talking toys drove people out.

 Keeping one eye on the guy, Dipper half focused on his reading, mostly intrigued by a picture. What he wouldn’t give to actually see a Hidebehind so he knew what the hell it looked like. Most of him doubted it would look like a dog, but what did he know? “Oh, we’ve had them. Family used to have a lot, brought most of them with us. My great uncle’s got a ton more not for sale.”

“From the stories I’ve read, Furbies were no one’s favorite little buddies,” Ferb commented, heading toward a set of shelves to begin the search. “That seems to be the case with so many of the animatronic toys. It’s interesting because these toys are essentially the same as non-animatronic stuffed animals as far as appearance, but the addition of electronic voice boxes and the ability to move of its own accord seems to create something much more nightmarish than fun to play with. And yet toy companies continued to make them.”

“You, my guy, have not met my sister. She loves them.” Though he was right about the general population. Every account from someone that wasn’t Mabel was a very strong ‘no’ to Furbies. “See, I think...If I was smaller, I wouldn’t mind? But the thing that messes with me is the fact they start up at nothing, you know?” Dipper occupied himself near the shirts, looking through a rack just in case. “Like just hanging out in the dark, no movement, no talking, and then it just talks at you acting like it’s so happy to see you. That’s creepy as hell. Fingerlings are fine, they don’t act up when you aren’t doing anything.”

“Well that doesn’t seem very fair to you,” Dory said. “Everyone else could figure it out wrong, too. They’re mysteries, the point is that they’re hard to figure out. You should get the chance to figure them out just like everybody else.”  

Dipper shrugged again. “How do you know I didn’t make the mystery? I’m pretty smart. Not fair if I came up with it and get to solve it, right?” It would basically be writing a mystery story and just putting the entire solution after one blank page, only fun if you knew that was the sort of story you wanted.

Prude’s jaw dropped. “Uh, no! Just because you say no offense doesn’t make it not offensive, ya jerkwad. Those are my names.” She still had a hint of a smile on her face to show she wasn’t mad, but she did punch him in the arm with a little bit of force. “Ooh, you’re lucky HitClips is a good nickname,” Prude said with with a grin fully back on her face. She raised her eyebrow, extremely curious. “Did I tell you I was a fighter? Did you guess? Because that’s a frickin’ stellar guess.” Prude gave a little wink. “Get it? Stellar?”

Dipper chuckled as he rubbed his arm. “Not my fault everyone else in your life is terrible at names and nicknames and stuff, HitClips,” he countered, taking a predictive step away just in case she decided to swing at him again. “Yeah, sounds cooler than Tootles. Tootles makes you sound like you play the flute or whatever.” Not that his own nickname wasn’t dorky, but not that level dorky. Must have been an old one. “Ha, star puns, good job.”

Blame him? Bill certainly hoped not, but the way this was shaking out he was more or less worried he chose the wrong damned person for this. Heroes in a crisis was good for the citizens, but bad for the one causing the chaos. Bill was growing more and more irritated.

“Fuck!” He yelled, deciding that the jig was up. He’d keep the monster flowing just a tad longer, but ultimately he wasn’t going to get the boy this round. He needed to find a way to physically interact, not just scare people. Add a consequence to this stupid bravery. 

Bill turned and rushed to the corner, ducking back away so he could keep an eye on things from a distance, but no longer be a part of the heroics. The monster roared, swiping at Dipper’s charging form and purposefully missing. It crashed into a nearby building and the fake rubble fell down. Then, slowly, it shifted attempting to keep up with the darting form and turn itself around to better face Dipper.

 Dipper wasn’t surprised that the dude had run off. In fact, he was more surprised that he hadn’t done the same yet. He gulped, steeling his nerves, and ran forward again. The whatever it was swiped at him, something he dodged with a yelp. He heard a crash behind him as he managed to get to the child.

 The kid crying almost sent him over the edge to start doing the same, but he picked the little guy up and held him close. “Don’t look, it’s gonna be okay,” Dipper tried his best to assure. The thing was looking at him now. Shit. “Gonna be totally okay.”

“Earth stuff?  That sounds super cool!  Where is it?  It sounds like a place I’d love to visit,” she replied with genuine excitement.  “Oh, well I-” she chuckled awkwardly.  “I just really love technology.  It makes a lot of sense to me.”

Dipper blinked. Wow, people really did think that his job was way cooler than it really was. Tourist traps really had a power. “It’s on the second ring, kinda out of the way. Guess it adds to the mystery.” He shrugged again. “That’s still cool, though. I’m in school and I still have basically no idea what I’m doing.”

Nice to meetcha Dipper!” She chirped, eyeing the shack once more before letting out a puff of air, “So, since your Grunkle doesn’t seem to be around, you mind giving me a tour yourself?”

“Thanks. “Well, who says you can’t solve the mysteries?” Dory said. The explanation he gave was kind of a non-explanation given that it was pretty much just the name of the place in sentence form, but it was enough for Dory. “I mean, if the mysteries are all here already why not just go for it? Seems like kind of a wasted opportunity to not solve ‘em ya’know?” 

Dipper shrugged. “I think the point is people like you are supposed to pay money to take stuff home and figure out what’s so mysterious. I work here, I might figure it out wrong.” Of course, there wasn’t much to figure out other than the great mystery of ‘why anyone would buy anything in here’, but people paying paid him.

“Is he looking at you like I look at him? Because if that’s not happening, I still maybe have a chance.” She can’t call Dipper ugly; that would mean she was ugly too. And she knew for a fact that she was not ugly. She almost missed him talking about clowns or something like that but she heard enough to go. “That stinks. Maybe you’ll find something about dancing armadillos instead.”

She rolled her eyes. “You have to eat at least one slice of vegan pizza to earn a wing or two, Dippy.”

“Not me, I don’t think, but he’s got a coworker I’m pretty sure he’s super into. Don’t really know what his name is, but I think there might be a thing there.” Dipper shrugged, now fiddling with the strings on his hoodie. “You know what. I don’t think you’d really like a dancing armadillo. Those things were weird looking enough on four legs.”

Dipper made a face. “Why? I’m allowed to not like stuff.”

“Actually, I’d love the chance to examine a Furby,” Ferb said, his interest sufficiently piqued. He’d researched the strange toys for a haunted house that he and his brother had put together a while back. “The stories surrounding Furbies are rather fascinating and it would be quite interesting to have even a cursory look at the inner workings of such a toy.” Ferb checked his enthusiasm, though outwardly he showed hardly any enthusiasm at all. “Of course, I understand completely if you don’t allow it.” 

Dipper raised an eyebrow. “You’re a braver man than me,” he said with a grin, exiting his place behind the counter. “I’ll help you look, if you find it first you can keep it, dude.” He paused, lifting up a box to look behind it. “I take that back, I’ll let you keep it anyway, it’s not my favorite little buddy out of the toys.”

“I get that,” she said nodding her head. Prude no longer went by her own full name so she could understand the power of a nickname. “Normal parents are better than sucky parents, though, so be happy for your Normal McNormalson Pines.” Prude thought for a second as to the question of her name. “Hm…call me whatever you want, really. Prude. Pentiss. Puzzola. Tootles. Make something up. You seem like a…creative soul,” she said with an over-exaggerated wistfulness.

Dipper blinked at the list of names given, processing. That was...a longer list than he’d been expecting. It was like she had friends that had never been able to settle on one. Or, maybe even bullies that couldn’t settle. He didn’t know. “Hm. Those are all not great, no offense. Could call you Hit Clips, sounds like a fighter if you don’t know it’s one of these things. If that’s not any good, I’ll stick with Prude.”

Bill’s secondary hope that the boy would begin to at least be pushed back by the crowd was slowly dissipating. Shit. He had to change methods. His eye immediately connected with the great swarm as he made his own way closer, hoping that a secondary protocol could be run. 

“You could be in danger!” Bill yelled back, trying to sound worried but really more upset than much else. “Get rid of it!? I don’t know… A giant fan?” He suggested, just as he began finishing up the new program. The swarm buzzed and hissed as it quickly began to take mass and fall down to the street and collect itself. Slowly building itself up it began forming into some solid monstrous shape, to which Bill hazarded a grasp to the other boy’s shoulder. “Scratch that, make it a sword or a gun!” Neither of which he could image the boy carrying on his person.

“We live on a space ship, I’m always in danger!” Dipper countered, finally getting to a thinner part of the crowd. He still had no big plan, but...shit, if the thing was made of smoke, like it looked, it couldn’t really hurt him, could it? And then it started looking more solid. Well, damn.

 Steeling his nerves, Dipper adjusted his hat, scanning the area around this...thing. It didn’t look like anyone was obviously around, until he saw a little kid crying just behind it. That’s when he knew what he had to do.

 “I’m going to get that kid! You can go if you want, I won’t blame you.”

“Grunkle?” Star asked, a wry grin hitting her face. She liked the word, even if she wasn’t sure what it meant. “Well, I kinda thought the point of a mystery shack was that it was all special, register-boy.” she chuckled. “What’s your name, by the way? So I don’t keep calling you register-boy.”

“Oh, sorry. Great Uncle. Grunkle.” It was easy for him to forget that not everyone shortened things the same way he did. “Could just be a name,” Dipper countered with a grin. “I’m Dipper. Who are you?”

“Oh! That’s so cheap!” he said, surprised by how inexpensive the little bugger was. “I’ll definitely take one of those then.”

Before making his way back to the counter, though, Flower thought back to what Dipper had mentioned about items from Earth. While there was no guarantee that he’d be able to buy any of them, he was at least curious to see what this store had to offer. 

“Um, would it be alright if I could also see some of the stuff you have from Earth?” he asked shyly, still admiring the Love Bug in his hand. “I’ve always been interested in that kinda stuff.”

“You can have this one, then.” Dipper flipped the little box closed for him, and went toward the counter.

 The question aimed at him made him freeze, but he figured that he could show off at least one thing that was actually from Earth and not just a sort of redo that looked like old stuff. “Sure. Um, I think right now all I’ve got is this.” Dipper retreated behind the counter, pulled a book from his bag. Actual pages and all, from the early 2000s, and about monsters.

 “This isn’t for sale, though, it’s mine. You can look, though.”

As Dipper demonstrated, Flower couldn’t help but light up even more. “Oh my god, look at that little bugger go!” With the excitement of a 10-year old, he gave the tiny box another jiggle and watched as the lady bug’s legs jittered from side to side. “Oh, man. It’s adorable… Jeez, this is so tempting.. how much are they?”

Now the excitement was nearly overwhelming, but at least it was over something that wasn’t really annoying. Absently, Dipper wondered what would happen if he showed this guy a Tamagotchi or something. Probably screaming. “Yeah, they’re pretty cute. Uh, not much really. Like a dollar.” This wasn’t an original, or else it would have cost so much more. But springs weren’t hard to find, and neither was plastic.
