Harry Potter is a very inclusive fictional universe, with different cultures, races, sexualities and beliefs, throughout the books, films and fans’ input on social media and their art. However, many fans have taken notice to the fact that there is very little, if any, about characters with disabilities, whether it would be mental or physical. No book series is perfect and I’m not going to pretend that Harry Potter is a gift sent from heaven but for such an inclusive universe, you would expect to see at least one character with a disability and how they manage the events that take place.

Some people argue that Lycanthropy (being a werewolf) is a form of disability in the Wizarding World but I disagree. Werewolves, with the exception of Remus Lupin and arguably Bill Weasley, are seen as Dark creatures and are on the side of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named when he gained power in both Wizarding Wars. They’re not restricted of anything but the laws from the Ministry of Magic. I know that it is possible that J.K Rowling was uncomfortable writing about something she doesn’t know a lot about. However, this disabled character did not have to be a main character where she’d have to explain the disability, it could have been a character like Cormac McLaggen, who was only prominent in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Another argument made about the lack of disabilities in Harry Potter is that the Healers of St. Mungo’s could just ‘magic’ the disability away. No. I know we don’t live in a world of magic but disabilities are far more complex than that. 

What would happen if Charlie Weasley had his legs bitten off while he was working with dragons? In reality (although dragons, sadly, are not real), Charlie would be wearing prosthetic legs with crutches or using a wheelchair. What about blind Muggleborns? Are the textbooks available in Braille? How would deaf mutes be able to cast spells before N.E.W.T level when they learn non-verbal spells? Would there be support for students with autism or Asperger’s? Every disability is caused in different ways and most of the time, it is permanent damage to the body. If it is permanent, how would magic fix it? I feel that J.K Rowling has tried so hard to make everyone feel included when they pick up her book that she had forgotten an entire minority group that is underrepresented and often misrepresented in the media and, though she may not have meant to do this, it makes the disabled community feel even more left out when they read, what was supposed to be, an all-inclusive book series.

Hey! Jsyn you can't develop did after age nine so harry would have did from the dursleys not anything to do with hogwadts. It could worsen the effects of did and cptsd/ptsd. Just wanted people to know that because spreading miss info about did really those of us with the disorder.

Okay neuroatypical crusader Hermione is my ☠️☠️☠️☠️. She's a know-it-all generally because she does know better, busy still sees things in black and white. Think about SPEW. Mentally ill Hermione Granger who is down to fight everyone for people to recognize and accommodate both mental and physical illness. Hermione slamming down her book and lecturing Ron about the lack of any reference to the study of mental health in the wizard of world (because all psychiatrists are muggles, and spells 1/2

2/2 can't cure everything. Harry listening to her rant about PTSD and trying to raise awareness in her own unique way as he realizes "oh wait this Thing is common and has a name and I'm not alone in the world?" Hermione calling out intolerance. Neville timidly joining her. Hermione and Neville eventually petitioning for better mental health care. Harry giving some of his money to their new project: the Ariana Dumbledore Foundation. Mentally ill HP characters trying to reform the wizard world.

Newt Scamander was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome later in life.

It happened shortly after his great-grandson was placed on the spectrum by a team of specialists in New York. 

The label itself made little difference, Newt had always been more interested in the classification of magical creatures. However, it helped him and his family make sense of great deal. 

Needless to say, Lorcan and his Pop were always especially close.

what about DID (dissociative identity disorder) + PTSD harry due to neglect as a child and severe trauma from all the fighting and all that voldemort did to him and the people he loves. and for months after the war he wouldn't eat or sleep or talk unless someone (usually hermione or ron) would make him. and then finally he did sleep but woke up screaming from nightmares and ron and hermione sat with him and made sure he was going to be okay. (2/2) molly weasly refuses to let him go back to the dursley's house after its all over because he's still not doing good and more than once she stays with him and calms him down after panic attacks and he and george spend a lot of time together, not talking but just sitting there and being with someone who understood what it felt like to see someone you love die. george also has PTSD after the war but that's an entire other thing.

i may ramble a bit because 2 special interests right here but autistic luna lovegood whos special interests are magical creatures and the quibbler and her eccentric jewelry and accessories are actually stim toys. and she flaps when she's happy, and the first time she starts flapping from happiness around harry its in DA when she produces her patronus successfully. harry gets super confused and then ginny or hermione has to explain to him that luna is autistic and ahhh just. autistic luna

ooh this is good but also I bet luna talks about being autistic/promotes stimming for everyone a lot so he wouldn’t even be confused!

headcanon that since the slytherin common room is under the lake there’s a room where the walls and ceiling are glass and you can just see into the lake like an aquarium

headcanon that when this was first done the mermaids got really aggressive and hateful about it and started ramming the glass but since it was magic this just caused them injuries

until a deaf/hoh slytherin started to teach them sign language and it took a long time bit by the time they left hogwarts they and the rest of the house were communicating with the mermaids and on good terms

eventually it becomes a part of slytherin house culture you’re a slytherin you know sign language because if you don’t chat with the mermaids they get grumpy

this helps a lot of deaf/hoh students

this also gives slytherin the best grades of any house on all aquatic magical studies

the mermaids give terrible dating advice do not trust them
