personally i think it'd be super funny if erid was like, REALLY concerned about the ethical implications of "keeping an intelligent individual "trapped" in an enclosure where they might feel pressured to not speak up and simply do what other eridians tell them out of fear of death", so they have a whole ethics committee full of social workers and eridian rights lawyers and stuff. meanwhile grace is just like "hey my zookeepers, can you make it rain in my cage tomorrow. thanks <3"

and my take today is that framing misogynistic writing as an "inability to write female characters" subconsciously takes away most of the blame, implying that women are an alien creature compared to men and that it is no fault of the writer because it's out of their skill set. it's not an inability, not a lack of expertise, it's the simple refusal to consider women as individual people and give them the same depth and grace that comes easily to the writer when they write male characters. it's not that christopher nolan, stephen king, james cameron (and frankly anyone using the argument, both professional and hobbyist; yes, that includes fanfic writers) etc can't write women, it's that they just won't. at that point in time it is a conscious decision driven by the laziness to unpack their misogynistic biases, and should be addressed as such

While I sort of get the impulse, it does always get my back up when people talk about something like Animorphs with this attitude of 'omgggg remember these books, how on EARTH were we allowed to read these books, they're so grim and dark and violent and tragic, no adults could possibly have known what they actually contained or they'd have been banned.'

And like. Allowing for the fact that there absolutely are adults who think every distressing topic ever should be banned from children's literature - they're children's books. You were allowed to read them when you were a kid because they were written for kids. Bridge to Terabithia is also a children's book. So is Where the Red Fern Grows and Old Yeller and Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry and The Giver and loads of other books that deal with heavy, difficult topics. It is appropriate and good for children to have books about these things that are tailored to their reading levels and it genuinely really bugs me when people act like they're somehow not really for kids because bad things happen in them or they end tragically.

One of the added benefits of art often being experiential and an act of empathy is that art often gives us a place to engage with complex ideas and feelings. Sometimes for the first time. That is doubly so for children's media. Here is a simple truth. Bad things happen to children. As much as we want to live in a world that prevents them, they do. Children experience every horrible thing that can happen to an adult and some that do not. Death, abuse, violence, bigotry at both the small and impossible scale. We do not all get the privilege of growing up at the same rate.

These children deserve stories too.

I would argue they deserve not only the idealized versions of these stories, but the imperfect ones they still feel seen in. The ones that don't align with their experiences perfectly. Even the ones that make them mad.

Kids don't live their lives in horseblinders.

The appeal of Eugene, at least for me, is that he is the closest a Disney movie has ever gotten to whumping a character. He is chased, kidnapped, assaulted, tied up (multiple times), beat up, hit in the head, drowned, and stabbed, and not necessarily in that order. Serves cunt, dies, is resurrected, serves more cunt. He is that movies chew toy. And it's GREAT. It's perfect. and I just don't think a live action slop remake is going to capture the slap stick magic of him being torn to shreds by the jaws of life that animation could.
