Dean thought he was insane.
He’d ducked in here to get something to eat, because when was Dean Winchester not hungry? But the moment he saw her —- the blonde girl who’d saved his ass —- he thought he was tripping. He had to be. There was no way that that was Joanna Harvelle. It had to be someone else.
But he couldn’t help himself. Dean stared, his lips slightly parted, his green eyes burning into the girl’s back. His hands were slightly shaky, and after a moment, Dean just clamped his palms together, huffing as he felt sweat drip onto his jeans. Nervousness was a bitch, but there was no way to stop it.
The hunter is caught off guard by the way Jo turns around to look at him, and he just purses his lips, raising both eyebrows before letting out a scoff. After a moment, the Winchester stands and waltzes up to sit beside of the girl, fingers curling around the silver knife in the pocket of his jacket.
❝Who are you?❞
If Dean doesn't end up killing her, they really need to talk about his bedside manner.
She doesn't need to look anywhere but his face, doesn't need to know anything besides the fact that this is Dean Winchester to know that he's armed and perfectly ready to take her down if he needs to. It shouldn't come to that point, because she's 100% Jo - even if it does, she's too far gone to be scared of death. Again.
"And here I was thinkin' I wouldn' be someone y'd forget. Hm." She's kidding - knows exactly what he means with the question, doesn't blame him for it either. If she wasn't in the current position she's in, she'd probably do the same. "S'pose I can give y' a reminder. 'm Jo." She answers simply, hailing the waitress and ordering a thing of fries with a smile before turning back to look at him.
She scans over his posture, his placement (specifically his hand placement) and she gives him a look before nodding down at his hand once. "Might wanna put that thing away, 'least 'till we're not in the restaurant. 's not polite."

She offers a grin, but the next question he asks isn’t one she particularly wants to answer. He’s right, though, she knows it’s not optional that he question her return - she would too if the positions were reversed.
”Don’ know, really. Either hell spit me out or somethin’ dragged me up. ‘s as much as I can tell y’.”
”Give the devil too much of a hard time?”
He could joke all he wanted, but it still troubled him that she was stood in front of him again. They’d gone back for her and Ellen the day after, there was nothing left of them to burn, or bury, so how had she managed to get her body back?
He’d ask a few more questions later.
“How much d’ya’ know? About what’s happened between then an’ now?”
She chuckles. "Hell didn't have jack on me, sweetheart."
"Lil' bit, I s'pose. Wouldn' believe how much the folks down there gossip, pro'lly don't have anythin' better t' talk about."
"But 'm not opposed t' y' catching me up, anyway." She offers with a shrug, glancing up at him with a teasing smirk.

He has on a few extra layers, more than the average for even a Winchester. Years have passed and he still isn’t good with the cold, but Dean insists there’s an unusual amount of supernatural activity around, so he isn’t going to protest. He just puts on a little more flannel than usual and huddles with a cup of coffee at some diner. Eventually he’ll move to a corner booth and start on some research while Dean is off who knows where.
A voice beside him startles him out of his daydreaming and his eyes shoot to the side, falling on that familiar face, that face that can’t be there because she’s dead. [ Dead because of them ] though that part doesn’t need to be added, does it? It’s always their fault. Always his fault.
He stares at her, wide-eyed with surprise for a moment before what is happening fully registers in his brain. The cold, seeing dead friends, it all makes sense. He’s never really hallucinated one of the Harvelles before, but there’s a first time for everything, right?
He looks away without a word, but with a face of obvious discomfort on his face as he takes another swig of his coffee, half wishing he had taken a page from Dean’s book and mixed alcohol in.
She tilts her head at him when he just stares at her, because she'd think that being a Winchester he'd be a little bit more accustomed to weird, true and freaky crap like her coming back to life. Jo doesn't think she's got high expectations really, as a matter of fact she kind of expects a flask of holy water to be thrown at her face and a cut or two. She does not expect him to look back down and ignore her.
That's exactly what he does - and she can't help but be a little bit confused with a sprinkle of offended. She doesn't say anything for what feels like forever because she doesn't really know what to say. Jo can see the discomfort on him and she expected him to be shocked that she's back, maybe a little weary but she didn't expect him to be unhappy about it.
"Is it just me or were y'er manners a little bit better last time too? C'mon Sam, y' don't ignore people when the last time y' saw them they were dead - or, well, about to be anyway." She comments, twirling her hair absentmindedly and giving him a look. After that, she takes to nudging him, her knee bumping his and using her elbow to bump his arm. "C'mon Sam."

[ Sam had gotten used to people seemingly coming back to life; wasn’t that what had happened to him more than once? He was sure the explanation would slowly come into their grasp, just as it always had for the two Winchester brothers. ]
”—How long have you been back?”
[ He took a shot of his glass of alcohol, staring at the mysterious fluids. He swirrled the contents of the glass slowly, before looking back up at the girl who he thought he’d never see again. ]
“Y’know I’m gonna have to test you to make sure you’re not somethin’ else, right?”
[ Although the two had never had much of a friendship, he knew he’d have to apologize for everything he and Dean had done to her when she was alive. In the long-run, they were the ones who had broken the last string and triggered her to become a hunter. It was a funny way of thinking, but he couldn’t resist the urge to apologize; although, now was not the time.]
"Not long." Which is true, her internal clock has been a little iffy since hell, though. She's so used to the time passing slowly, to months being years that it feels a little bit weird to be back on earths time - she can pretty much say it's been a few weeks, around a month or two maybe. "Couple months, just about," is what she ends up settling on.
She can't help but chuckle at his next comment but she nods, because it's something she's been expecting since the second he saw her. She's actually surprised he was willing to take up conversation before he checked her for everything else. "I know."
"At least buy me another drink first." Jo adds after a pause and tilts her chin to look over at him expectantly, even though she's kidding in the first place - her second beer is out, though. It's not an issue for him to test her, a little nick won't do jack to her skin considering she's already got plenty of marks. She thinks it's funny that Dean had better skin after he got out of hell than she did - that just ain't fair if y' ask Jo.
It's up her arms that she's marked and she supposes it's little to pay considering she's out, but still. "Well, go for it." Jo says easily and tugs up her sleeve, offering her arm because she assumes he has a silver something on him. Winchester's are just prepared like that.
{+ 6}
She thinks it's funny that just because she died, Winchester boys - or anyone for that matter would think that her senses aren't just as acute as they've always been. Jo's been pretending not to notice, easily sitting and waiting for her order at the diner without looking back besides the once that she did and noticed him first but it's been a good ten minutes and she can still feel his gaze burning through her clothes and truth be told it's pissing her off.
She can feel his eyes on her back like she's something he needs to keep an eye on and she hates it - hates it because she's still Jo, for fucks sake. She's still the girl that gave him and his brother a chance to run without hell hounds on their ass - and she doesn't like thinking that because she doesn't blame them. Never has. Never will.
The next minute, though, she still spins in her seat and shoots him a look.
"If you're gonna sit there and stare, the least y' could do is buy me a drink."
{+ 10}
It’s the second beer she’s had since she got here, and Jo can hold her alcohol so that doesn’t really matter - except she’s probably going to buzz out on her next one if someone doesn’t speak up in the next five minutes. She knows she’s been gone a long time, she’s supposed to be dead and all, but she thinks that if anyone should be used to the dead not staying dead, it’d be Sam and Dean.
Obviously she’s going to have to be the one who starts this conversation, because if she sits in silence with anymore she’s either going to get buzzed or fall asleep.
“Have y’ gotten a haircut since I died?”
[ Indistinct muffled voices shot from many places, but Sam refused to rip his eyes from the spot on the table where they had been glued for hours now. His mind wandered to places he’d never dare let it if it wasn’t for the fact that he had come to the bar alone. The trials had been another let down upon himself and his brother, although he wouldn’t confess it in his deepest dreams. ]
[ Broken was the only word to describe the hunter sitting at the bar table. ]
[ Suddenly, a familiar voice filled the air; a voice that he hadn’t heard in so long that it seemed almost as if that particular voice was from another life, as abstract as the idea was. ]
“Jo? How’re you-?”
[ ’Alive’ was the word that was supposed to follow, but audible sounds failed to slip from his mouth as he stared at the girl with eyebrows furrowed, the only movement being produced are his breath and blinking. ]
Sam and Dean have never had it easy. Since the moment she met them they haven't looked the least bit at peace with the world and it's something that Jo saw a lot clearer after she had died - but it's pretty easy to notice even when you're alive as well, even for the stranger looking at them with the least bit of attention.
Still, seeing Sam now she thinks he looks more somber than he did when she was dying. Seems like he's seen even more than he had a few years ago. She doesn't doubt that he has. Those boys go through more in a day than most normal people do in a year.
She really does expect the question - she's heard it over and over again in the past few weeks she's been out of flames, apparently Harvelle's death gets around in the hunting community. Most of the people who ask have gotten a simple shrug, maybe a 'Dunno.'
Sam may get a more elaborate response, but she still can't say much. "Don' really know, t' be honest. Hell got tired a' me, I s'pose."
No. Sweetheart, if this is our last night on earth, then I’m going to spend it with a little thing I call self-respect.
"D’you want one?" It’s the end of the friggin’ world, which means that as much as they have higher concerns - both of them, she also figures everyone deserves a treat now and then. Call it reward for not dying yet - permanently, anyway.
"Not really - I’ll find something to cheer me up." He shrugs a little, and smiled. He walks with her, taking her down to the cabin that housed their ‘fearless’ leader. Castiel knew better than that, Dean feared a lot of things. He knocks twice on the door, before opening and entering. "Dean, we have a visitor."
"Good luck with that, sweetheart." She says simply, shrugging and walking along with him. She doesn't know how Dean'll react when he sees her, she knows he's fond of her, but Dean Winchester has changed in ways not even she can imagine and she knows he's less predictable lately.
{+ 8}
She wasn’t expecting anything in particular from him, but it doesn’t stop her from cracking a grin at his response. “Y’ want me to put on some lipstick an’ kiss it too?” Jo questions with a smirk, raising and eyebrow at him and chuckling.
”Not usually into autographs, y’know? But I thin’ I can make an exception.”
"If it’ll keep that smile on your face, then go right ahead." He raised his eyebrows at her, his lips pulling into a familiar smirk.
“Jo, I gotta ask, y’know I do…How’re you back?”
She offers a grin, but the next question he asks isn't one she particularly wants to answer. He's right, though, she knows it's not optional that he question her return - she would too if the positions were reversed.
"Don' know, really. Either hell spit me out or somethin' dragged me up. 's as much as I can tell y'."

"Y’know, I know i’m a sight for sore eyes, but ‘f ya talk a picture, might last longer."
She’s teasing for the most part, but she does think that a picture would be more useful and less uncomfortable than a pair of eyes stuck on her for a larger than average amount of time. Jo gets it, don’t get her wrong, she’s been dead for the past few years but she could probably give him a little more knowledge if he’d talk to her.
"Goddamn, don’t I wish I hadn’t left m’camera behind, what with you givin’ permission for a picture and all——"
Sure, he’s being sarcastic, and maybe he sounds on the wrong side of bitter, but he thinks he deserves to be—— what with Jo having been dead for the last few years (he’d seen it happen), yet standing right before him and giving him sass (he was fairly certain he wasn’t drunk). He wasn’t in the mood for it, not at all, and if he rested a hand on the gun at his hip discreetly, he wasn’t going to mention it.
"How?"
If she'll say one thing for sure, it's that Dean hadn't changed at all. Jo lets out a snort and rolls her eyes, but she tilts her head at him before considering her answer. His hand shifts - hers doesn't, she's just too tired to care about a bullet or a trigger. She shrugs.
"Hell couldn't hold me down, heaven just couldn't 'ave me. Ended up back here, I s'pose." Ends up being her response, which is pretty much true. She'd probably tell him more, if she knew much more about why and how she ended up back on earth - but she's still working on getting that little bit of important information.
