popular m/f or m/m ship (usually white/light-skinned): man grooms, stalks, coerces, literally beats the shit out of their partner
news, critics, and fans: the popularity of this ship reflects a transgressive counter culture in which women and queer people use fiction as a safe space to explore dark desires 😍. the creators have invented a fascinating, twisted, and thrilling dynamic between these two characters, layered with history and gothic symbolism. a true interrogation of patriarchy
f/f ship, interracial ship: [displays any slightly twisted or unequal elements to their dynamic]
news, critics, and fans: um... idk this is just problematic. the creators really fucked up here. these characters are so unlikable and two-dimensional. women deserve better than this. and anyway, why does every show have to have romance these days? the desire to force romance onto shows reflects the myopia and anti-intellectualism of modern television watching
popular m/m ship: the guys get along really well and are twee, funny, and charming, or their relationship is built on quiet insight and respect
news, critics, and fans: the virality of this show speaks to what women truly want in a relationship: EQUALITY! these characters really work hard to earn their level playing ground, and it's so beautiful to see
f/f ship or interracial ship: [does the same thing]
news, critics, and fans: this is so lacking in imagination, so boring and dull. news flash! i don't want my characters to talk in therapy speak. i want my gay characters fucked up insane and cringe!! i'm so sick of flawless characters that are nothing like real life. these writers need to go outside and touch grass
Yeah idk man I'd *like* for this Reunion game to be good but I don't have a lot of trust after Double Exposure. I don't want that 'fell for it again' award. You keep that fuckin' ribbon away from me! 😭
I'll wait and just watch a youtube playthrough or something.
Finally getting around to watching the mighty nein show after holding off to watch with a friend. We're 5/8 so far.
Overall pretty solid. The changes make sense and the characters all work and feel well translated. I feel like tlovm had the stronger start and plot to hook you though. I do have a couple criticisms though:
Animated Essek feels a bit too dumb and trusting? I could see him getting sucked in by like Ludinus, but Trent? Really? That guy?
Yasha's absence. Kinda like Pike's absence, unnecessary but that got made up for with the cool moment and heroic arrival to save the day in tlovm s1. Not really sure why Yasha needs to be absent this long, but I do have 3 episodes to go so I'm not gonna rant on it too much yet.
Also not a criticism but I fear Essek may betray his friend Rahul Kohli I mean Verrat to protect his secrets and if he does I will be very sad. 😭
I have no idea where the season is going to leave off which is pretty exciting.
tumblr is also like this
The thing you gotta know about criticising Larian right now is that they're currently on the pedestal.
That means, right now, they can do no wrong.
It used to be CDPR. When they released The Witcher 3 they were put up on the pedestal. They weren't like other companies, they actually cared about gamers.
Then they released Cyberpunk and got violently torn down from there.
Now since Larian released Baldur's Gate 3 they've been placed up there, and they're not like those other companies, they actually care.
Larian's pandering and marketing to the reddit gamer bro crowd is a real turn off.
Anyway, including lots of sex and violence doesn't make something 'mature,' it makes it sexual and violent.
According to some reply I'm a 1950s purity warrior now because I think Larian's pr shit is cringe. 🙄🙄🙄
I should've known, this is tumblr and I wasn't hyper-specific and didn't have a million qualifiers before my statements so of course somebody jumped at the chance to interpret it in the most extreme and hostile way and accuse me of hand-wringing about purity culture or some shit.
My humble apologies. Allow me to try again so you don't get confused:
This is about Larian's marketing. They made a trailer with a bunch of shock value clips for attention. Some Larian employee equated this to 'maturity' after some criticisms were made.
"Anyway, including lots of sex and violence doesn't make something 'mature,' it makes it sexual and violent."
'Sexual and violent' is not an insult or a criticism. It's literally just a description.
Sex and violence are mature themes. Their inclusion doesn't automatically make your work mature. You can use mature themes in an immature way, for example. There's a difference between including mature themes and maturity in your writing or handling of themes.
"Larian's pandering and marketing to the reddit gamer bro crowd is a real turn off."
You know who DOES believe that just including a lot of sex or violences equals maturity? Reddit gamer types! I find those people miserable and thus, I find Larian's pandering to them to be a turn off! Who woulda thunk?!
