I identify as female. I’m cisgender. My gender expression is more feminine than masculine (though not terribly so). My interests are more feminine (granted, not stereotypically feminine).

Yet, I tend to relate more to male characters. Why?

Because my personality, way of thinking, etc, is extremely stereotypically masculine.

I have problems with aggressive impulses. I tend to be emotionally closed off. I like to solve problems on my own. I have a hard time comforting other people. I’m not a big fan of physical touch. I’m very loud and assertive. I’m blunt. I tend to solve problems intelligently rather than emotionally. I react to stress with anger.

Obviously, these things aren’t exclusive to men, but women and girls are socialized to not have these traits, while men and boys are socialized to have them.

Even well written female characters don’t often have these traits, and it’s honestly kind of disappointing.

I don’t relate to them. I just don’t. I relate to male characters because I think more similarly to them.

TLDR: write more female characters with masculine personalities. They don’t even need to be masculine presenting.
