Lock, Shock, and Barrel can’t be trusted with any living or undead animals to keep as pets, but they all keep whining and complaining about not having one. So, to shut them up or to just be kind of a jerk, Oogie gave them a rock and told them that that would be their pet.
However, the kids were absolutely ecstatic about their pet rock. It didn’t bother Oogie, at first, because now the kids are messing with something else other than his lair for once. But it soon annoyed him once they started acting like the rock was sentient and making requests from them.
First, Lock said that Smashy (the official name for this pet rock now) wanted to mess around with the casino styled torture equipment while there was some poor sap about to be eaten or whatever. Then, Shock was taking all of the funny pages out of the newspaper (Oogie’s only real reason to still even read newspapers) because Smashy wanted to read them first. The last straw came when Barrel had announced that Smashy wanted to eat some of the bug offerings for Oogie. You can mess with his equipment, you can take his funny pages away, but you DON’T mess with his bugs!
From then on, Oogie has had beef with a pet rock and is openly hostile with it.
Any villain you ask about this will tell you either one of the following, “Oh, those kids are 100% messing with him. There’s just no way they’re not.” “Well, Oogie did just pick up a random rock, and with Halloween Town being what it is, it probably is a sentient rock.” “Why do you all keep asking me this? This is too idiotic for me to waste brain cells on.”
If you happen to be dating the bag of bugs, you get to be one of the first to witness this little feud in person. Often times you have to remind Oogie that he is, in fact, butting heads with a rock. You have tried to figure out if this whole Smashy the rock thing is just an elaborate get-back or if the kids are being serious. No matter how hard you try, you can’t tell which it is.
Oogie gets particularly angry if the kids say that Smashy has a request for you rather than him. Like this one time, Barrel accidentally dropped Smashy and it resulted in a little chip breaking off it. Barrel then came to you with the rock, saying that Smashy was asking if you could kiss where it got chipped to make it feel better. Yeah, Oogie was less then pleased, and that’s putting it lightly. Oogie got very clingy with you the rest of the day.
