Boredom and teenage angst in 80s America. by Sage Sohier.
do yall have any idea what handsome young blade as a gender means? i saw it as part of that post that lists genderqueer identities from the 90s and it seems really interesting to me but i cant find any information on it. thank you!
I haven’t heard of this before, and after a bit of research I haven’t found anything, but if anyone else has information regarding this, please feel free to share!
oh dear i feel old. circa 2001 i joined the email list that is a source for that list.
here’s the wayback machine’s version of the listserve’s website.
here’s the wayback’s archive of the page with the list of 90′s and early 00′s genderqueer identities, including handsome young blade.
i never used handsome young blade to describe myself, but IIRC… handsome young blade means a young clean cut handsome/beautiful man, usually without a beard. That’s its general usage. Or it can be a slang term for a gay man - that’s why there are multiple older American queer newspapers called The Blade.
So as an identity, it generally meant, and I’m working from some very vague memories here so please, feel free to correct me, someone masculine-leaning, clean cut, a bit dapper perhaps (?), and very queer. Hope that helps, and that someone with better knowledge can explain more!
Thank you for the additional context!

When we un-packed it, the Paris curator was embarrassed to discover lipstick marks on its cheek: someone in the Louvre had played at being Pygmalion—or Hadrian—and kissed it. And who could blame them? Up on a pedestal, center stage, the effect of its beauty was jaw-dropping.
