âConfessions After Midnightâ A Tick Fic :)
Summary: The Tick and Walter have a heart-to-heart. Takes place directly after the confrontation scene with Midnight in âAfter Midnightâ (1x8) when Arthur tries to warn Midnight about the potential fate of Superian.Â
________________________________________________________
âWalterââÂ
Arthur Everest faced the man who was attempting to be fatherly to him.Â
Meanwhile, Walter remained still, silent and expectant.Â
âYouâre not my dad.âÂ
Before Walter could respond, Arthur simply turned and boltedâleaving both Walter and the Tick standing alone together, completely dumbfounded and lost.Â
The Tick waited expectantly for Walter to immediately run after Arthur.Â
Instead, Walterâs shoulders sagged heavily as he fell into the nearest chair with what seemed to be complete and utter defeat.
Thankfully, the Tick had a special knack for sensing when a fellow being was hurting.Â
As though he were an old friend or a psychologist, he took a seat adjacent to Walter. Meanwhile, Walter was all too aware that the Tick was waiting patiently for him to speak; he just wasnât sure where to beginâhe had always felt out of place in Arthurâs life; he had never been able to bond with the boy in the way he had hoped. Now, it seemed like they were drifting even further apart.
âHeâs rightâŚâ Walter spoke quietly and sadly. âIâm not his Dad. AndâŚwhenever I try to beâŚI just make things worse.âÂ
âWalter,â the Tick offered, âI think Arthurâs just confused!âÂ
âWell if he is then I canât blame himâŚâ Walter tried not to look discouraged. âBecause to be honest, Tick, so am I! All I want to do is be supportive. I just want to make sureâthatâthat heâll be okay,â he added, in almost an inaudible whisper.Â
The Tick placed a gigantic blue rubbery hand on his shoulder. Walter looked up with surprise; heâd never expected such a huge hand to be so gentle and comforting.Â
âYou donât need to worry about our Arthur!â The Tick spoke as though he had known Arthur Everest his entire life. âThat boyâs got a heart the size of the entire universeâand the smarts to match!âÂ
âButââ Walter struggled to find the words. âHeâs always beenâŚ.âÂ
âWhat?â the Tick challenged, âCapable? Witty? Unyieldingly brilliant---?âÂ
âUnusually vulnerable,â replied Walter, staring off into the distance and looking pained. âYou know, TickâI fear that he might not be able to meet the demands his life is asking of himâŚ.â His voice broke a couple of times as he spoke, but the Tick didnât seem to noticeâor, if he did, he didnât comment on it.Â
âWalterâŚâ The Tick pat Walter reassuringly on the shoulder, âI will be there! Come on, who better to come to the rescue of our wonderful Arthur from his Moment of Peril than THE TICK?âÂ
At this, Walter couldnât help but smile. âIâm glad he found you, Tick.âÂ
âIt was Destinyâs doing,â the Tick replied, staring off into the Wild Blue Yonder, âShe brought us together. Destiny smiled upon us both that day.â
âI suppose it did.â Walter smiled at the thoughtâand smiled wider when he noticed Midnightâs book on the table. âHowâs the book going?â he asked, genuinely curious, his worries suddenly forgotten.Â
âFascinating!â the Tick exclaimed, beaming at him with excitement. âWalterââ The Tick hesitated. âHave you ever wondered what goes through a dogâs brain while heâs dreaming? Well Midnight says that dogs dream in color in their sleep!âÂ
However, it appeared that Walter wasnât listening. Instead, Walter kept staring down at the Tickâs gigantic blue toesâthe likes of which seemed disproportionately huge, even for such a gigantic blue man.Â
â...Walter?â The Tick cocked his antennas at the man in confusion.Â
âTickââ Walter looked up at his newfound friend with an unexpected combination of curiosity and, strangely enough, excitement.Â
âWalter?â the Tick prompted again.Â
âTell meâŚâ Walter smiled. â...How are your feet?âÂ
âSuper Heroes Anonymousâ: A Tick Fic.
Summary: Overkill and Arthur Everest have a heart-to-heart about someone that is significant in both their lives...Dot.Â
(Post season 2 Finale.)Â
______________________________________________________________
âAnd then I was just likeâyou knowâcaught,â said Mighty Sea-Man, âin their web, man- it was a big fish-net web of lies!âÂ
Arthur Everest sat in the far back row, listening respectfully as Mighty Sea-Man shared his story. It was mostly about how Mighty Sea-Man kept getting ignored, and also mistaken as a sea-monster when he was, in his own words, considered âmore man than beastâ.Â
It wasnât exactly an issue that Arthur could identify himself with. He wasnât even sure if he really belonged there. This meeting was designed to be a self-help group created specifically for superheroes, known to the public as âSHAâ or âSuperHeroes Anonymousâ. Arthur figured heâd be welcome since he'd been accepted into the Flag Five (this acknowledged him as a âsuperheroâ, even if he wasnât a âcategoryâ). The Tick had been encouraging him to go ever since heâd been dealing with insomnia; unfortunately, heâd started having those nightmares again, and he was losing sleep more and more often. More often than not, the Tick would rise in the morning to find Arthur already sitting in the kitchen at 5 am, his eyes blank and staring.Â
The group was huge, with superheroes from several different counties all gathered in the same spot to share their woesâwhich was a relief, because Arthur could sit inconspicuously in the backâand likely go completely unnoticed. However, one other guest didnât go unnoticed by ArthurâOverkill was also in the audienceâthe last person Arthur had ever expected to show up.Â
Arthur noticed him right away. He was, after all, the only superhero to show up there dressed in full-fledged black metallic vigilante garb, complete with a masked helmet which completely concealed his face from view.Â
When he was immediately told to remove the helmet or leave, Arthur figured Overkill was going to throw a fit and goâbut, much to his surprise, Overkill acquiesced without a fightâhe immediately took off his helmet, and promptly took a seat in the back row.
That was when he saw Arthurâand that was the first time that Arthur (or probably anyone) had ever seen a vigilante blush bright crimsonâbecause vigilantes didnât typically go to group therapy. Throughout the rest of the meeting they managed to act like they didnât know each other (even though it was obvious from the first glance that they did).
Thankfully nobody signaled him out and Arthur was able to leave without speaking. Funnily enough he didnât see Overkill anywhereâuntil an arm pulled him into a back alley without warningâand Arthur yelped with fear, until he realized it wasâspeak of the DevilâOverkill himself!Â
âOverkill!â he whispered, waving frantically as he was also trying to compose himself, âwhat are you doing here!?!âÂ
âSay anything about this,â was Overkillâs answer hissed in his face, âto anyoneâand youâre a dead man!âÂ
âOkay, okay!â Trying not to panic, Arthur stood as still as possible, holding his hands up in submission. âJesus! Wannaâwanna go get some coffee orâor something?âÂ
âI donât drink coffee.â Overkill snapped with a glare. He removed a flask from his backpack and took a swig. âUnless itâs Irish.âÂ
âUgh!â Arthur smacked his forehead with consternation. âCâmonâŚ.â He waved in the opposite direction, âLetâs get you sobered up.âÂ
They sat together at a little off-the-grid place known as Benâs Diner. Arthur nursed a decaf while Overkill poured several shots of whiskey into a drip coffee.Â
âJust for the recordâthis wasnât my idea.â Overkill surprised Arthur by being the one to speak up first (however begrudgingly).Â
âOkayâŚâ Arthur was suddenly having flashbacks to his makeshift âtherapeuticâ talks with Superian.Â
âYour sister insisted.â Overkill grunted the words bitterly into his coffee.Â
âSheââ Arthur stared. â--she did?âÂ
âIâm not the kind for ultimatums, Arthur.â Overkill was about to douse his cup with another shot of whisky when the waiter passed their booth table. He and Overkill had a staring contest of sorts; needless to say, Overkill won, and the rest of the whiskey was promptly emptied into the mug. âNot sure how this even happened butâyour sister seems to have some weird kind ofâhold---on my psyche.â A pause, then Overkill faced him warily, âYour sister...doesnât play with Voodoo dollsâŚ.does she?âÂ
âUmâŚâ Arthur blinked, slightly startled by the question as he grappled for a response. â..Not thatânot that I, er, knowâŚof?â He shrugged. âSheâs been kind of aâmysteryâever since she started hanging out withâŚyou, actually,â Arthur added, hoping that Overkill might take the hint that he was, likely, the catalyst for any sudden dramatic change in his sisterâs life. âI donât think sheâs into black magic,â he offered, âif thatâs what you mean.â (He secretly had no idea if she was or wasnât, and could only hope that this was true.)Â
âWell you might not be aware of this.â Overkill spoke to the mug as though he were self-conscious in his presence (which Arthur was a bit baffled by, but no less amused). âSheâs a bit of a dominatrix, Arthur,â he confessed, âandâŚ.I like that in a womanâŚ.and I think she knows it, too,â Overkill added with an almost childlike giggleâand it was at that moment that Arthur realized Overkill was way past the alcoholic limit if he was sharing this information with him.Â
âDammit, Overkill!ââ Arthur groaned, squirming in his seat, âI donât want to know all that!âÂ
âHeyââ Overkill smirked at him, â---word on the street has it youâre a good therapistââÂ
âBut Iâm NOT a therapist!â Arthur hissed, furious at the notion, âAnd Iâm definitely not YOUR therapist!â he added for good measure.Â
âDotâs insisting I get some âtherapyâ---â Overkill gave a heavy eye roll at the wordâ âbecause apparently, if I donât? According to her: âweâre doneâ.â Overkill snorted into his mug in disbelief. âCan you believe that Arthur? Your sisterâgiving ME these kinds of ultimatumsââ Overkill balled up a napkin in his fist, crushing it tightly as though it were somebodyâs skull. âSheâs gone way too far with this one!â he concluded, âway too far.âÂ
âYou knowââ Arthur pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, âI donât think Iâm reallyâqualified toââÂ
âDid you know,â Overkill cut him off abruptly, âthat sheâs even more domineering than Ms. Lint? NowâIâm not one to brag about such things, Arthur,â Overkill added as he lowered in his voice, âbut thatâs saying something!âÂ
âWait a secââ Arthur had gone pale at the mention of the woman. âYouâand Ms. Lintâwereâ?âÂ
âInvolved? YesâŚandâA couple? That would beânoâŚâ Overkill shrugged. âItâs complicated. We were kind of an on-off thing for awhileââÂ
âBut OK let me get this straightâ! So what youâre saying is,â Arthur demanded, âthat Ms. LINT is my sisterâs competitionâ?â He couldnât finish the sentence without feeling slightly ill.Â
âWell, noânot exactlyââ Overkill snorted into his mug with amusement. âI wouldnât exactly say âcompetitionâ---â He avoided Arthurâs lasting gaze, âI would say in the bedroomâtheyâre more like theyâreâequals,â Overkill added and then giggled again like a giddy schoolboy, and Arthur almost felt the need to gag.Â
âWhen wereââ Arthur groaned into his hands. â---I canât believe Iâm asking this butââ He groaned again. âYou and Lintâwhenâwhen did youâlastââ Again, he couldnât manage to finish the sentence. Â
âItâsâbeen awhile.â Overkill paused as he took a long swig of the now colder cup of coffee. âHmm..â he muttered, âneeds milkâŚâÂ
âOverkill!â Arthur snapped. âFocus! When were you lastâinvolvedâwith Ms. Lint?âÂ
âWhy do you care?â Overkill was looking at him with something akin to amazement.Â
âBecauseââ Arthur struggled to explain, âI want to make sure youâre notâusingâmy sisterâas a rebound,â he finished frantically, then trailed off exhausted.Â
âWeâre both using each other, Arthur.â Overkill was surprisingly forward. âThatâs what humans doâthey use each otherââÂ
âMaybe you do,â Arthur snapped back, âbut I donât!â He glared at Overkill, barely able to suppress his emotions, âyou better not take advantage of her,â he warned, âorâor IâllâIâllâIâllââ He tried to picture himself taking revenge against Overkill.Â
âYouâll what?â Overkill scoffed at him as if reading his mind, looking even more amused, âuse your mighty assemblage of weapons on me?â Â
âMy suitâs my weapon,â Arthur glared, âand I can use it---â He leaned forward and added in a hushed tone, â---if I have to.âÂ
âHey manââ Overkill stared at him so long that it made Arthur keenly uncomfortable. âWas that a threat? AreâAre you threatening me right nowâ?â he asked with disbelief, as though he couldnât fathom anyone doing such a thing (least of all someone like Arthur).Â
âLetâs just call it a warning.â Arthur didnât remove his pointed gaze. âMy sister is the most important person in my life, Overkill,â he added, âand if she gets hurtââ His voice faltered in spite of himself yet he kept going, â---Iâm not going to just ignore it and pretend it didnât happen.â Â
With the way that Overkill was looking at him, Arthur suddenly realized he needed a lot more caffeine for this conversation.Â
âIâŚthink I better get an espressoâŚ.âÂ
I never guessed that in my adulthood, Iâd be relating to Calvinâs parents as much as I do in this comic.
Because damn ... Calvinâs dad was so right.
I Wrote the Tickâs Origin Story in a Multi-Chapter Fanfic!
Dear Tick Fans:Â
Where would the world of Justice be without The Tick???Â
We all need a Superhero to root for, that is genuinely kind to others, and that cares so much for Peace and Justice and for ridding the world of evil-doers everywhere!!!! I fell in love with the story of the Tick after watching the Amazon Prime series (I wish I had given the original animated series a chance when it was on the air)!
After watching the awesomeness that is Season 2 of the new version Iâm bummed- I wish that The Tick could find a permanent home!  I wish that Amazon could have kept this show on and given it more seasons, because it really brought something special to the table! I love that they address the Tickâs missing backstory in the actual show- without providing any easy answers. However I decided to try my hand at answering those questions for you, the Tick fan, as best to my ability! This is the result. Please enjoy âA Date with Destinyâ at:Â

PS: Except for one glowing review (Thank You ProfferandProsper) I have not had any feedback for this 22 chapter long story! I would be much obliged for some feedback from true Tick fans. This story also has some Dot/Overkill (because I had to give that ship some love- and I donât just mean Dangerboat)! Enjoy :)Â
