Noise tolerance gap relationship
Currently trying to apply for disability allowance and one question was ‘do you struggle with showering’ and I was getting a friend to help me and I said to them ‘no cause I sit down while doing my hair and I always shower at night so I can lie down after so it doesn’t affect me too much’ and they said ‘but if you showered during the day?’ and I said ‘oh. Yeah I wouldn’t be able to function for 3+ hours.’ it’s just so funny to realise what things are so engrained in my day that I don’t even know they’re not normal, like of course I can’t shower during the day, that’s fine?
When I used to ask "When are we leaving?" I always got "Not yet," which was frustrating because I didn't want to leave, I just wanted to know how much more time I had left, but I was a kid, and didn't know how to properly word things.
everybody deserves someone in their life who will engage with their waffling about their hyperfixation or special interest. they have no personal investment in this beyond that they love you and you love this thing. treasure that person
btw it's so fucking stupid you can be anxious physically in your body even after you've decided mentally you don't care. I'm supposed to be in charge here
I think some of the loneliness of autism is that you feel like you hurt people just by Interacting Wrong, but you don’t know how to Interact Right, and the more effort you put into it, the more exhausted you are and the more artificial it comes across (with the end result of people still being upset with you). and it’s not anyone’s fault for not liking Being Interacted With Wrong, and it’s not your fault for doing it so wrong, but it is very, very lonely.
anyway, every single book I write ever is going to secretly be about autism
person w adhd experiencing symptoms of adhd: why the fuck can’t I do this thing . I wish there was some explanation for this
having ADHD will have you going round your house saying aloud, "Okay, so if I were me, and me is a dumb fuck, where the hell would I put X," and you still can't find it
i haaaate being avoidant. it makes you feel like the world's biggest jackass whenever someone tries to talk to you or whatever and you just Freeze Up
Oh sorry i took a long ass time to reply and didnt say anything. I got arbitrarily scared and tired myself out so now i cant say much. Oopsie teehee. it makes you feel like a huge dickhead
mhhmmm yea
i love when i “make a mental note” of something. it’s gone within 20 seconds
how are you doing? your last update was from 2024, and it's been a minute since so I hope your life has improved.
(you don't need to share or answer, just know youre in thoughts)
take care!
thank you for your message! In true me fashion I kept meaning to reply and then forgetting but I am better thanks.
Didnt end up giving up my uni course and instead finished my masters, moved several times, split from my boyfriend after three years together and finally got my autism diagnosis. it’s been a busy year and a very hard one but things should start looking up now.
thank you so much for this message - tbh I didn’t think anyone actually read those posts. Thank you
Your disability advocacy isn't worth shit if it doesn't extend to hoarders by the way. Those houses you see on the channels of people who clean hoarders' houses for free? PEOPLE, alive human beings, who deserve rights and respect just like every other human being, own those "filthy/disgusting" houses. If you can't extend your advocacy to those people you're not an advocate. Btw.
How the fuck do you think they're ever going to reach out for help if they see everybody all the time shitting on them for being "disgusting" or "lazy" for something that spiraled out of their control due to depression, or ocd, or not being able to clean, or not having anyone to clean, etc etc etc. Living in a hoarding situation doesn't make anyone a bad person or filthy or undeserving of basic respect and love.
this goes for anxiety and depression too, until the inevitable burnout
I found an extremely dope disability survival guide for those who are homebound, bedbound, in need of disability accommodations, or would otherwise like resources for how to manage your life as a disabled person. (Link is safe)
How to have a great, disabled life.
It has some great articles and resources and while written by people with ME/CFS, it keeps all disabilities in mind. A lot of it is specific to the USA but even if you're from somewhere else, there are many guides that can still help you. Some really good ones are:
How to live a great disabled life- A guide full of resources to make your life easier and probably the best place to start (including links to some of the below resources). Everything from applying for good quality affordable housing to getting free transportation, affordable medication, how to get enough food stamps, how to get a free phone that doesn't suck, how to find housemates and caregivers, how to be homebound, support groups and Facebook pages (including for specific illnesses), how to help with social change from home, and so many more.
Turning a "no" into a "yes"- A guide on what to say when denied for disability aid/accommodations of many types, particularly over the phone. "Never take no for an answer over the phone. If you have not been turned down in writing, you have not been turned down. Period."
How to be poor in America- A very expansive and helpful guide including things from a directory to find your nearest food bank to resources for getting free home modifications, how to get cheap or free eye and dental care, extremely cheap internet, and financial assistance with vet bills
How to be homebound- This is pretty helpful even if you're not homebound. It includes guides on how to save spoons, getting free and low cost transportation, disability resources in your area, home meals, how to have fun/keep busy while in bed, and a severe bedbound activity master list which includes a link to an audio version of the list on Soundcloud
Master List of Disability Accommodation Letters For Housing- Guides on how to request accommodations and housing as well as your rights, laws, and prewritten sample letters to help you get whatever you need. Includes information on how to request additional bedrooms, stop evictions, request meetings via phone, mail, and email if you can't in person, what you can do if a request is denied, and many other helpful guides
Special Laws to Help Domestic Violence Survivors (Vouchers & Low Income Housing)- Protections, laws, and housing rights for survivors of DV (any gender), and how to get support and protection under the VAWA laws to help you and/or loved ones receive housing and assistance
Dealing With Debt & Disability- Information to assist with debt including student loans, medical debt, how to deal with debt collectors as well as an article with a step by step guide that helped the author cut her overwhelming medical bills by 80%!
There are so many more articles, guides, and tools here that have helped a lot of people. And there are a lot of rights, resources, and protections that people don't know they have and guides that can help you manage your life as a disabled person regardless of income, energy levels, and other factors.
Please boost!
Greetings bugs and worms!
This comic is a little different than what I usually do but I worked real hard on it—Maybe I'll make more infographic stuff in the future this ended up being fun. Hope you learned something new :)
If you are still curious and want to learn more about OCD, you can visit the International OCD Foundation's website. I also recommend this amazing TED ED video "Starving The Monster", which was my first introduction to the disorder and this video by John Green about his own experience with OCD.
The IOCDF's website can also help you find support groups, therapy, and has lots of online guides and resources as well if you or a loved one is struggling with the disorder. It is very comprehensive!
