reverentmisfortune:
Mitsunari didn’t say anything at first. His eyes didn’t move from the fixed point he’d been staring at for the past few minutes, and he seemed to be lost in thought. He understood that this individual was trying to help him. He couldn’t show his gratitude as easily as others could, especially not now that he had such a heavy feeling of despair in his heart that dampened those emotions.
“…What is your name?”
He spoke suddenly, his concentration broken by a thought that had pierced through the shroud in his mind.
“If you have told me before, refresh my memory…”
It was rare that Mitsunari remembered someone’s name at first if they weren’t immediately important. Even in some of those cases, he forgot. Unless they were around him often or important to his lord, he didn’t take the time to commit them to memory.
He knew it was a great flaw, one that he hadn’t been able to rectify even before Lord Hideyoshi’s death. Once, he had asked Lord Hanbei about how to remember names easier despite feeling like he had been bothering him with such a mundane question. He had given him advice, and he had applied it to situations in which he had met new people. Now, it just seemed like there was no point in trying to fix it.
Still, he used those techniques. After all, he had asked again what this man’s name was, hadn’t he?
As Mitsunari stared, Jon could feel a cold sweat dripping down his neck. Was he angry? Was he upset? Jon really couldn't tell and that was the worst thing when someone trained under the Oracle herself could not even see through a man's disguise. however, when Mitsunari finally spoke he felt himself spark back into reality rather than being in a mess of tangling thoughts.
"M-Me?"
He had heard that the Ishida wasn't that good with memory-- or at least-- remembering people's names or faces. A lot happens when loved ones are ripped from your very arms... he could... understand that in a case. A soft sigh left the boy's lips before bowing his head.
"I apologize, Lord Mitsunari, I will remind you... I am... Jon Burke... I come from the Iyokouno forces where I was trained by the Oracle, herself, however, I have not been home in quite some time. I left... when my sister suddenly vanished and have been traveling since... helping others while also attempting to find my sister..."
He replied in a soft tone, keeping his head bowed in respect to Mitsunari as he was still a general.
