Cooking With Christie: Blueberry & Cranberry Compote

Recipe: So the beginnings of the Recipe started with this one. However because I didn’t have all the ingredients on hand - I had to improvise....as always!

Meaning? I used orange zest rather than juice and used fresh squeezed lemon juice and doubled the amount of blue berries (as I had no raspberries) and only used a 1/4 cup of whiskey (as all I had was peach flavored Crown Royal - and had zero clue how those flavors would combine). 

I also halved the sugar the recipe called for as I wanted to use it in as the jam component in some very sweet cookies - so keeping it tart is a good thing!

Then all you do is toss everything into a sauce pan, let it simmer until the fruit is soft, then mash the fruit to bits - then let it simmer down to the consistence you want!

Christie: I can totally see Miss Marple making compotes, jams and jellies - or at least having one of her helpers make some for her!

The Moving Finger

This was my first ever Agatha Christie book and I am not disappointed at all. The story starts off with Jerry, the narrator who moves to the country - Lymstock - to relax after a horrible injury alongside his sister Joanna. Soon later they receive an anonymous hate mail directed at them but think nothing of it. However it seems as though they aren’t the only ones as it seems someone in the community has been delivering it to many others. However this had gotten so out of hand there had been a suicide. The police and community are then suspicious of everyone as someone in the village is deemed responsible for this but no one knows who.

As the story is narrated by Jerry and his perspective was good as it was afresh without any biases as he was new. His intake of stuff happening around him is interesting, he is wise and figures some of the mysterious out himself. He becomes a strong character in the book. Miss Marple makes an appearance near the end, I was a bit dissatisfied by how little she was in the book. She was there for the end, making sense of the mystery. Her insight was wonderful and although I thought I figured it out, I was way off the mark. She explained it wonderfully and what readers and Jerry himself missed in the plot. Even though I was annoyed I didn’t get it right I was completely happy because it shocked me and I loved it. This book had mystery and romance within it and I genuinely enjoyed it. The setting and people were great and it was fun to try and solve.
