Sneak Peak
So I’m working on a new organisation system is combined all the other ways I used to organise everything into one document! Hopefully it will be a LOT easier to understand!
I am starting from scratch and adding to the document episode by episode. The only things that are transcribed are newspaper clippings and the like. All the others are just given a title [like the DEAN page or Missouri page]. The transcription of all the pages will be in a separate document.

To-Do Lists!
Since I’m sure you all know the gist here: I love me some lists!
I just climbed my way out of the rabbit hole that is this blog [it honestly wasn’t as bad as I thought] and now the work begins!
This isn’t in any particular order:
1) Watch all the Journal episodes [I only know up to season 8, but I know there have been a few cameos in the last four seasons
2) compile a comprehensive list of all the pages seen in the show, including all news clippings, artwork, pictures, and other misc things attached to each page and include a page layout reference to each. [this is for ease of everyone]
3) go through my “order” list and revise it
4) organize my John’s Journal folder because it is a mess [update/delete the caps folders because there is just TOO MUCH and some of them [re: the original TV rips] are useless
5) upload my pdfs of page layouts and caps to a reliable file sharing site [any suggestions?] for others who wish to use them
6) go through my “written pages” document and try and fill in more of the blanks since taking a step back for 4 years has probably given me a fresh new outlook!
7) replicate all of the newsprints or find some somewhere? so all I need to do is print them off [I think this is legit the only digital thing that I am missing in its entirety!]
8) make a barebones journal [sew the actual goddamn thing]
9) get all the props together. I think the only thing I’m missing is the rosary [any suggestions?]
10) practice my John penmanship. Because why yes, yes I am writing it all out by hand. Are you really surprised at this point?
11) put the damn thing together

Also, if anyone could give me a list of the new episodes [s9+] that have the journal in it That would be lovely. If it’s not too inconvenient. I’m sure I could google it also?

Oh, hello there!
I have slept for 4 years and have now come and awakened [perhaps it is because I am so distraught over the finale last week that I need something positive SPN-wise, or maybe it’s because I’ve gotten a heavy influx of new emails of questions ... prolly the latter]
Let me first preface this by saying: yes I still have the email address working. yes I read every email [and flag them for later replying, even] and so I’d just like to apologize for never having replied to the many emails I have gotten. I am a horrible person because of that and I hope you can forgive me and all your projects have worked out despite my lack of response! [and if you’re still plugging along at it, I hope I am not too late!]
Second: It has been four years [about] since I worked on this project and a lot of my brain cells and memory since then have been killed by wine [another reason why I never got around to replying to some of the emails. I simply did not have the answers]. So before I go about making new posts and making this blog a bit more concise and easy to use [and even working on finally competing my OWN journal] there is a LOT of catching up I need to do. As well as organize my folder on my laptop as it is currently [and always has been] a mess.
I will not delete any of my posts pertaining to my making of the Journal that come before this post as a lot of them are interesting and it’s fun to see the progression as it happened [and I love the collaborative work we did as a community on it] but think of this post as a sort of archive-marker. Everything before it was my journey of creating the journal. Everything after is my trying to make the blog more user friendly [and a jump-off of my NEW journey to create the journal 4 years later]
hiii, first of all I want to thank you because I am making my own journal and your blog is sooooo helpful. I just bought the supernatural comics (Supernatural: origins) and it shows that John gets his journal in '83, and it is totally blank. He writes a lot of heartbreaking letters to Dean, and other supernatural stuff, did you know about this? Do you think I should incorporate them in the journal that I am making now (even though the dates do not match)?

Finished Winchester Journal
There’s 67 pages in it. Everything is handwritten and the majority of the illustrations are hand drawn. It’s pretty much jerry-rigged out of three different journals and then rebound. It has nearly every page I could find. There’s a couple exceptions of things I just got too burnt out to do, like several more individual monster etchings that didn’t have much other content with them, but I’m ok with not including those. The thing is a beast even without them and I got all the important pages in. It was done in about 2 days so it’s far from perfect, but it still looks good. If I had several months I could probably get a screen accurate prop but since it’s a quick project, I’m not going to stress over it.
A huge, huge thank you to diy-johns-journal . Without their crazy intensive research I never would’ve been able to put this together so fast. They did all of the research leg work and I just kind of copied it all down and pieced it together.

Right now I have about 50 pages done, which includes the bulk of the recognizable pages that are seen really well on the show. There’s maybe a dozen more to go and a few more illustrations to draw (because I’m an idiot who started hand drawing before realizing I could probably find most of them as clipart online and now I’m too far into the project that I’m spitefully determined to actually draw it all). Next I’ll be hunting down all the photographs and newspaper articles from it and then binding it all, so I still have a way to go. It’s not 100% accurate - since I’m moving so fast with it and am using what journals I already have on hand and can rip apart, the formatting of the pages themselves is wrong so I can’t quite layout things exactly as they are in the real prop. Which would normally bug me, but total accuracy with this thing is a level of neurosis that I’m refusing to let myself rise to over a spur of the moment project. So I’ll settle for like 92% accuracy instead.
I thought this would be a really quick project that I could bust out in a couple hours, but I was wrong. There’s probably about 9 hours of work that’ve gone into it already and I actually do feel like a crazy hunter now because I have all these pages written in Latin scattered across my kitchen. It doesn’t help that there’s surprisingly so few resources out there and that the handful of people who have made it are incredibly secretive about their methods. I couldn’t have done this so fast without diy-johns-journal‘s amazing blog. They seem to be the only person who will willingly post pictures and transcriptions so I’m eternally grateful for their awesome work and dedicated blogging. I think they’re groundwork was the only reason I was able to churn out 50 pages in one day.
Jeezus you did this in ONE day?! It took me months and I’m nowhere near where you are [probably because I am much more into the research part than the actual building part :P]
Yeah, the biggest reason I am so open with all of my work is that I found it terribly frustrating that no one was sharing their info. Glad I could help :>
Oh my gosh, I didn’t think you’d actually see this! Thanks again for all the resources, you’re amazing! I’m actually sitting here printing out newspaper articles for the journal as I type.
Yeah, the only reason I was able to get this much done so fast is because of your blog. If I’d had to do all the research, it would me take months too. And I’m actually on a time crunch because I need this by tomorrow, so that’s why I’m going so fast too. And there’s somethings I know I can’t do in this time frame like the military pins and leather engraving, so I’m not going for as accurate as you are either.
I’m not a fan of secret keeping with crafting and cosplay either, so I love it when I find other people who are so candid and encouraging with their work. It’s much appreciated I’ll be sure to link you pictures when mine is done! Which will hopefully be in several hours!

Hello, I am trying to make this journal for my friend for her birthday, so I tried to print out the black journal pages so i could write it all in on my own but the links are not working, and when I try to copy it it just brings me back you your page, do you know how to get them to be able to be printed/ or is there somewhere else I can print them from?
