Oh my god I canât believe I have to say this but:
DISABLED PEOPLE CAN HAVE GOOD DAYS!!
Just because I had one day when the pain wasnât there for long enough for me to enjoy it doesnât mean I am suddenly âcured from my issueâ or that I donât need accommodations anymore.
Iâm going to be disabled my entire life. And it isnât because I havenât done enough or tried hard enough to get better.
This seems to make a lot of abled people uncomfortable because they say things like âoh donât give in! Donât let it hold you back!
Me accepting my disability as a reality is how I learn to cope with it and make the adjustments I need. My disabilities do hold me back and acknowledging that isnât a bad thing.
I'm so tired of how the public school system fails to support disabled students.
I see you've been extra stressed out recently. Have some more pain.
it would be so cool if able bodied people could get it through their heads that i dont just get a little tired or hurt a little bit when i do things.
âwe need to start doing xyz ââ i cant âbut it needs to get doneâ i still cant âbut ââ cant :)
Forget them, I need to get this through my own head.
Talking about my chronic illness around non chronically ill people:
"Oh, you know, just the usual"
Updates from my chronically ill friends:
"Yeah, so I've barely been able to leave my bed for the past week and I'm in a ton of pain and I keep throwing up, how bout you?"
When I say âschool should be disability accessibleâ, I donât just mean we need handicap rails and EAs. Kids should be able to miss a day without failing out of school. You shouldnât be dismissed from clubs because your attendance record is âspottyâ (true story). I once missed an entire week of school because of a terrible, unending migraine. I was expected to keep up with my studies despite the blinding pain that came with working on my computer. When I heard my teachers say that you couldnât miss exams, I asked what I would have to do to be excused from them. Their response? âEither get a doctorâs note an hour before the exam or death of an immediate family member.â
I cannot express how rigid this expectation was. First of all, with my condition, I wouldnât have enough warning about my sickness to go to the doctor and request a note. For many people, this is exceptionally difficult, especially with the current shortage of medical professionals. Next, it ignores the fact that my schedule may not line with theirs because of my medical needs. Once, I had to visit a hospital a province away (which I was on the waiting list of for over a year) on the same day as an exam. I begged my mother not to take me because I was so nervous that I would be marked as an automatic fail. I was lucky enough to make it work, but thatâs only because of my spectacular support system consisting of family members and wonderful doctors.
Disabilities arenât always about needing a bus that can accommodate wheelchairs. Itâs already difficult enough for many of us to maintain school attendance without the harsh punishments involved for skipping a day. We need to be able to miss school without being punished. Only than can you claim that the school is âaccessibleâ

WAIT THERES PEOPLE WHO ARENT IN PAIN ALL THE TIME
I donât so much forget that Iâm disabled so much as IâŠforget that other people arenât.
Like, I canât forget how tired I am or how much Iâm hurting or how many things I wish I could do that I just canât right now. Those things are actively happening to me, Iâm thinking about them all the time.
Itâs more likeâŠwhat do you MEAN they got their entire to-do list done in one day? What do you mean they had the time and energy left over to do a couple of other things, too? What do you mean, they were sore yesterday from doing something physical, but that theyâve pretty much recovered by today, and tomorrow they wonât even feel it?
when you accidentally pull an all-nighter because you spent the whole nighy trying and failing to fall asleep
Donât be disabled this shit sucks /s
When my joints and tendons ache so bad the fatigue sets in, I just long to be held tenderly, quietly, gently. Just. Let me soak in gentle touch, trick my brain into releasing Feel Good neurotransmitters to drive some of the pain and fatigue away. Let me rest with you.
