Bruised tits? How and why and when did that happen? I’m used to mystery bruises on my legs, and sometimes arms, but my chest? That’s new
Just spent a day talking to people and answering questions about myself (whyyy do I hate it so much?) and listening to noise and touching people and standing around uncomfortably. I want to cry. I should want to cry because it was my grandfather’s funeral. Instead I want to cry because of all the aforementioned reasons.
I swept and swiffered my room! The slightly more involved version where I moved rugs and chairs around, and then also vacuumed the rugs. I got sweaty, had a slight headache, and my legs are inexplicably sore now, but I got it done! It still knocks me out of doing much the rest of the evening, but a number of months ago I couldn’t complete even a cursory sweep of a portion of my room. Progress!
I used to hear the advice “you need to learn how to say ‘no’ to people” and I thought I understood what it meant. I thought people were saying that you need to learn that it’s okay to say “no” to things, and let yourself say “no” and overcome the fear and whatever other barrier has been keeping you from doing so. And it does mean that; I wasn’t wrong.
But the advice was not just that you need to learn to say no, but that you need to learn HOW to say no. And there’s a little more that goes into that beyond just giving yourself permission to say no, or overcoming fear. There’s also the ever complicating calculations that go into deciding when to say no, or maybe, or yes. And there are different ways to say “no” as well, and you need to learn how to best communicate your “no.”
There’s the factor of timing, as well, that I’ve found is pretty important. I’ve learned that telling someone “no” early on (or at least telling them “maybe but likely no”) is so much better for everyone than giving a “yes” that turns into a “no” at the last minute. You may feel bad about letting them down, and want to gamble on the possibility that you might be able to make it and avoid that. But it’s better for them to know as soon as possible so they can plan accordingly. What’s most inconvenient is to drop out last minute and leave people unexpectedly in the lurch, or needing to alter plans last minute. Best for the solid “no” up front.
This got more rambley than intended. Thesis statement: it’s better give a “no” up front than to give a “yes” that turns into a “no” last minute. Also, there is more to saying “no” than just the willingness to say it; it is a skill to be developed and exercised.
Bought some pretty fake nails the other day, been waiting to use them on a special occasion. 🙂 💅🏻Unfortunately, the next special occasion I attend will probably be my grandfather’s funeral. 😥🫤 not very festive.
My favorite bit recently is to—preferably while no one is paying me much attention—pick up an object and balance it on my head. Then just leave it there, behave as normal, wait for someone to notice. When they do, very casually and with a straight face, ask “do you like my hat?” My family has grown equal parts tired and fond of this joke. My mom doesn’t even wait for me to ask anymore, just says “I like your hat.”
As with most bits, it is generally more fun for the person running the bit than for the people on the receiving end. It has…not the greatest success with most adults. It absolutely kills with kids up to the age of like, seven or eight, though.
About ten years ago I decided that the next step I needed to take in my life was to accept and explore what it meant to be a failure and to have failed. This infuriated almost everybody in my life and clearly terrified a lot of people. People do not want you to accept failure. They dont want you to like... Sit with and think about it and pick it up and turn it arpund in your hands and really examine it. They want you to keep throwing yourself against the impossible walls until your body explodes! They do not want you to say "alright then, I've failed. What does that mean for me? Im still here. What does the life of someone who has failed look like?"
This makes people very angry and panicky.
My mental health improved in ways it had not in the previous DECADE once I stopped. And. Sat. With failure. And thought about what my failure ... Was. And looked at the structures that produced it and examined them critically.
It is so taboo to fail and admit it openly and talk about it. It is so taboo to talk about or think about failure in an accepting way rather than hiding it shamefully until you experience a degree of success in some area which allows you to present the past failure as "a stepping stone" to your current situation. Fuck that. We are put in positions of guaranteed failure by society every day and then punished and shamed for it. Lets fucking talk about failure
When I was a kid, my favorite bit to do was to go “c’mere, I have a secret, I’m gonna tell you a secret” and wave the person closer so I could whisper the “secret” in their ear. Then I’d whisper “hi!” and pull back and be all “but shhh, don’t tell anybody! It’s a secret!” And usually that would be the end of the bit, but sometimes they would say hi to someone briefly after and I would like, smack them on the arm a little and be like “that was a secret!! I told you not to tell anyone!” And anyway, no one ever enjoyed this bit as much as I did, even if a couple of friends would sometimes join in.
Changed my bed sheets 💪 right after cooking dinner and feeding the pets. Trying not to sweat on my fresh bedding
love saying shit like "i think" and "maybe" and "a bit" #doubters #mypreface
Does anyone else struggle (more) to eat hot food when nauseated? Like, it’s hard to get myself to eat at all, nothing really sounds (or looks, or smells) appetizing. But it’s easier to make myself eat something cold than it is with something warm.
Cleaned floors and now I feel siiiiick booooo. Horizontal time, now
Met my brother’s roommate, who is currently mostly living with his boyfriend, and is in the process of slowly moving his stuff over there. Important note, before they became friends and roommates, this guy and my brother briefly dated. The roommate also brought his boyfriend, and y’all. He looked SO much like my brother. At one point, they both bent down at the same time to pet my brother’s dog, facing each other, and it was like looking at a fun-house mirror. Someone has a TYPE.
the rumors are true: i dont feel very good
saying “you are a burden on society” is just such a weird framing of priorities It’s like saying “wow, think how much better gas mileage your car would get if you weren’t sitting in it” or “think how dry that umbrella would be if you weren’t holding it in between you and the rainstorm”. the things we create? they’re for us. they are meant to carry us. they are meant to protect us. we are meant to hold them up to keep us dry.
why do we even have a society if not to take care of each other?
Yeah, like I think it’s so odd when people say someone is “taking advantage of” something (the system, social programs, etc.) because…those things were created to give people an advantage. To be taken advantage of. If no one is taking advantage of them, then what’s the point of them. (And I know this sort of phrase is used actually when they think the people don’t NEED those programs, accommodations, etc. That they’re “taking advantage of” things that aren’t for THEIR advantage. But that’s a whole other fake-claiming can of worms conversation.)
I’ve had a headache threatening to get bad on me for the last couple of days, and this afternoon it finally did, but thank god it actually responded to Tylenol. It did the last couple of days, as well, but I wasn’t sure it would since it was so bad. I was worried it might be a migraine, and me without any migraine medicine. But yay! Tylenol kicked it. For now, anyway. Might come back tomorrow. It’s been a persistent thing.
Sometimes you just gotta drink 30 ml of soy sauce like it’s medicine.
