please omg teach me how to write in a school setting without it being like cliche or stereotypical 😭
this was very new for me since I've never written anything like this. but I've been gatekeeping a 'fan fiction' like Harry Potter so you could say I tried.
I guess at first it depends on what type of novel/book/prompt you're writing. Like every author has their own. Harry Potter- Thriller/Fan-Fiction/Action. Twilight- Romance/Thriller. Perks of Being a Wallflower- Romance/New Teen. I could say maybe deciding the genre. You don't want to add too much or its just gonna be a mess and you don't know what you're even writing about.
Your first sentences should hook the reader. By the first or second chapter, you should have revealed a little bit about the main character and a little bit of the school.
Maybe the main character lost her popularity due to a rumor; maybe she was framed for some rule-breaking. Keep it original, but also believable. Ask yourself: could I see this happening in my school?
Maybe make it about your life, or school, or maybe just make it totally random. Just let the ideas come to you.
The events are more likely to feel real if you base them off things that have happened to you, because you'll be able to provide more details.
You can show it to friends and family members in your preferred audience, and ask them if they feel like the story is carrying itself.
Take a look at your own school, or a school similar to the one you're writing about, and then envision it with supernatural elements.
List out traits you want to see in your main characters.
