Hey. Hey @elekanahmennahmen hey look
ouuu we all say in unison
i saw someone on here mention maddie’s monty not being able to tell his left from his right when doing the “you turn left at france” line so i looked out for it in yesterday’s matinee and it really amused me!
her champagne GROWLore in born to lead was immaculate, i’m starting to notice some of her little character choices and it’s so fun to watch. my second viewing of the year four cast and i’m already obsessed with all of them ngl
i was going to try write one big post about all the new y4 mince principals but i started writing this and realized maddie needed her own post so here are my ramblings.
i never caught maddie when she was a cover in any of her roles and was delighted to hear i’d have a chance to see her now. she really, really blew me away with some of her acting choices and her vocals are incredible. her eyebrows might as well have been a sixth actor because boy were they working overtime. due to her age and having heard that she’s a very joyous monty, i was worried she might lack the power or authority of other monty’s, but that simply wasn’t the case. the only way i can think to describe how she plays him is incredibly oblivious to just how manipulative he’s being, while also clearly being on the brink of a breakdown as the show goes on. she has the audience absolutely hooked around her finger with every little wink and gesture, while also being very scary in act two during the jean scene and the father scene. the audience was so clearly on edge that not a single person laughed when she made the “father” jokes. she bounces off the rest of the cast extremely well, and her and ahmed really make charles and monty feel like friends and like they’re growing closer throughout the show (until they’re not). she’s very very smiley, but it only serves to make monty more charming and made me believe he truly has no clue that what he’s doing can be downright mean and controlling, it’s just what he’s always done and been expected to do. my god can she dance, and it is glorious. chloe almost broke her after the “what do we have to lose” “the war” part of the pitch, which was brilliant, and chloe DID break her juan during the morgue scene. after juan didn’t get his cake the entire crowd went “awww” which resulted in chloe turning to the audience and mocking the “awww”. maddie proceeded to very clearly giggle to herself so hard that she couldn’t do the juan frown and was instead kinda manically grinning.
some specific acting moments that i jotted down and thought were great:
- maddie!monty doesn’t know his left and rights (turn left at france) he does the L things with his hands before nodding to the left
- her cockney voice is so squeaky that i cried laughing in surprise
- “james james… i think i might be sick”
- she points a LOT, reminds me of alex with ties
- she does a split jump thing in jft
- very trans coded monty right here!! he crosses his hands over his chest a lot, especially post his first failed pitch when he’s talking to charles. maddie!monty might actually be the most trans coded monty i’ve seen live.
- looks jean up and down in the pitch and mouths “wow”
- her acting pre jft is so fucking good
- her scream when spilsbury comes through the blackboard is pure terror
- when maddie!juan has the yellow hat and phone he excitedly compares the two and mouths “amarillo” to himself and it is ADORABLE OH MY GOD
- before calling haselden a genius, monty gives charles a sort of knowing look that solidified for me that maddie!monty is not using genius as a way to manipulate charles. the look she gives him very much reads like “watch what i’m about to say to this dumbass, know you’re different because you are a genius”
- she’s in the air a lot
- she REALLY does not want it to come out that monty is a filmmaker - other monty’s almost seem to be pretending to fight for the files back because they want to show off their brilliance, maddie!monty is terrified of people finding out
- “at least it’s not a bloody musical” followed by spinning in a circle, little leg kicks, and grinning at the audience in delight at his own jokes
"the nation's in need of a marvellous man", from making a man / "the people will cheer for the marvellous men", from did we do it

currently grieving the fact i’ll never see tash!juan again. he really was just a little guy.
what’s yr fav mince flub you’ve seen (like screwup or broken prop or similar)
okay so this is a great question, and i was actually only recently talking to someone about how badly i want to be at mince enough to see some truly big flubs. just a note, i am not going to count anything from the final performance of the og brits on broadway, just because i could be here all day!!
two stand out to me, they're not particularly big flubs but they've suck with me lol.
the first involves my son juan. alex!juan's phone wasn't on the base correctly at the end of the ballet and promptly fell off and towards where i was sitting in front row, which made me laugh even harder than i already was. chloe adlibbed something about "needing to pick that up" and alex just made the cutest faces as she picked up the phone. her and roshani proceeded to spend a long time pushing their hats with their eyebrows and it was just an overall adorable moment.
the second is from my very first mince and i think it might be the exact moment i became obsessed with the show. it was near the end of act 2, where bevan comes in and announces they did it. zoe!bevan said her line about how they were moving their troupes out of siciliy and one singular person towards the back of the golden cheered. just one. but we all heard it loud and clear, as did the people on stage. zoe turned to the audience without pause and said something along the lines of "thank you, that's the reaction i wanted" or something like that. i don't remember exactly, but gerianne, jak, david, and claire immediately broke - presumably from just how quick zoe was with her response. it was an incredibly joyous moment and it was so unbelievably fun and so very mince that i still remember wiping away the tears from my eyes from just how hard i'd been laughing.
Hola!
Oh no.
Hola, Juan!
Oh cripes!
El telefono!

El… otro telefono! Es Londres!

London?
Hola London!
I already made a post about Alex Monty and parallels in her choices but I completely forgot about my favourite one so I'm making a new post sorry everyone.
After the pitch when Monty praises Jean ('well done miss leslie you saved our skin there') Alex used to pretend to be trying to remember the name 'Leslie' as if it hadn't quite sunk in the first time and only now was it worth recalling. It's sort of equal parts an affirmation that she's proven her worth to Monty, while still being tinged with that self-absorption (her name wasn't worth remembering beforehand, sort of like Charles).
And then it comes back in the bloody tea, on 'thank you for everything miss Leslie' there is this pause between 'miss' and 'Leslie' where Alex does this performance of forgetting Jean's name and clicking her fingers at Hester to help Monty recall. It's such a humiliating (if tiny) moment where Monty tries to make Hester complicit in the scene (as he later does Charles). And it's so petty. Everyone, all the characters onstage and the audience, knows that Monty knows Jean's name, we all know it is a performance specifically designed to hurt her, and it turns that almost genuine moment after the pitch on its head- of course that was calculated too. Everything he does is, whether it's to showcase his generosity in bringing people into his world, or to show how easily he can throw them back out.
So let’s raise another glass and feel sublime

Assorted Favorite Operation Mincemeat moments not on the Soundtrack
I really hope they release a full album version of Operation Mincemeat with all the dialogues someday (alongside a DVD ;w;), but until then here are some various favorite moments from the stage
(Ordered in the order I thought of them while writing this)

Because Alex Monty will never ever die for me I am going to talk about one of my favourite insanely clever things she did. There are these BRILLIANT parallels where things she does that seem innocent or fun come back and become actually a bit insidious.
In pre jft scene, she would shout 'NO!' at Charles, really playful and fun, and get very in his face when he's protesting about going on a bar crawl, and it is such a familiar moment - and then in the bloody tea as Monty leaves and he says 'ok Charlie, plan is back on' he again leans right into Charles' face and says 'ok' in that exact same abrasive tone as 'no' and it becomes cruel and humiliating and still so familiar, but the moment is completely twisted.
There's a similar thing where in making a man Monty gives this sly little look at Charles on 'the nation's in need of a marvellous man' (implying he is the man the nation needs, and the man they are making), it's such a sweet insular moment from Monty revealing his appreciation for Charles. Then, in act as if, there is the return of this secret look on 'there's so much at stake when you're making a man' but this time it's almost bitter.
And then obviously everyone and their mother knows about the tie motif but it is so brilliant to me how it transforms from a correcting, guiding gesture to controlling and admonishing (though always possessive).
I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting but I just think it's such a brilliant way of exposing how calculated every one of Monty's moves are, and how (as Alex once said) 'Ewen's wonderful until he's not'.
details from yesterdays matinee i don't want to forget that i need to put here because if i send my best friend one more voice note about mincemeat they will probably block me:
• alex blowing roshani a kiss in god that's brilliant
•i'm so sure alex also tapped geri's ass not long after
•alex generally being a menace and flirting with everybody else on stage and also the audience
•how smiley and jumpy she was throughout the whole thing but especially during the first few songs where she would look across the audience loads like she was taking it in one last time
•peter nodding at the audience member who aww'ed very loudly after the door was slammed in his face
•peter choking when alex asks what his pitch is called
•alex's squeaks when talking about spilsbury after the pitch
•alex and geri as the waiter before just for tonight ... beautiful women indeed!!!!!!!!
•alex going so hard during just for tonight one of her suspenders fell off. it was really hot
•i'm also really going to miss peter's dancing too <\3
•roshani mocking alex's hand flapping during the script reveal
•geri coming out as fleming in glitzy finale to the BIGGEST applause (aka when i started crying and then did not stop)
•roshani as deborah LAUNCHING the top hat at alex so hard that it flew across the stage and completely broke her
•roshani poking her head out after this to salute at the audience
•geri's voice wobbling when they start to talk about glyndwr and promptly breaking everybody in the audience
it was such a fun show and i already miss them more than is healthy i don't know how to get over this!!!!!!
