Someone call the manager
For any random billionaires who want to buy back a portion of their soul by fixing (part of) the world, I would like to suggest starting a Research and Development Fund for Boring Shit.
- Agricultural statistics are terribleâeveryone uses FAO data, everyone bitches about how the FAO data is wrong, but itâs the only data available. Ditto for pretty much all statistical data in countries that donât have well-funded national statistics programs (and for many who do). Figure out how to fix this. Itâs hard to solve problems if you canât even measure them.
- Low cost, low maintenance rural/peri-urban electrification and water infrastructure. NOT âletâs invent a clever new thing.â Thereâs 1001 of those already. Make a fund that villages can apply to or something. Make it super easy to apply:Â âI want x number of solar panels and y metres of electrical cable.â Okay! Hereâs $1000 (or whatever, but thatâs the order of magnitude weâre talking about), go electrify your village! Donât know what you need? Letâs put you in touch with someone who already did the thing, they can give you advice. Monitoring: buy a guy a motorbike, pay him to go fill out a checklist:Â âdid they do the thing? how many houses have light bulbs now?â What if people just bribe the checklist guy? Pay him decently, make it cheaper to admit you fucked up than to bribe someone to lie for you, and youâll get a lot less lying!
Do that for 5 years. Assess the hopefully thousands of projects youâve funded. See what you learn.
- train nurses. train vet techs. train teachers. train extension workers. fund literacy programs. build roads. sure, the government should do it, but guess what? that doesnât actually matter.Â
Think SMALL. Hire people who know the area theyâre working in. Give them lots of flexibility and minimal paperwork. Fund a bunch of shit and see what works whereâbecause no, whatever GiveWell et al. claim, we donât know all that well, see my first point in re statistics. Care less about efficiency and more about giving people chances to try stuff out. Donât just SAY you do this. Actually do it.
Thereâs lots* of donors who want to fund âinnovativeâ âevidence-basedâ programs that claim theyâre going to Fix The Whole World Sustainably through Empowerment Gender-Aware Climate-Smart Capacity-Building Self-Sustaining Development Goals Success Revolution. And thatâs fine! We need those too.
(*relatively)
But letâs have some more organizations that will fund boring shit thatâll probably work, or at least not fuck up too badly.

American Gods season 2 ~ March 10
Hot take but sign language should be taught in schools as a language option and all cinemas should provide subtitles on all their movie screenings

does anyone else imagine a scenario so vividly that you begin to make facial expressions or gestures to go with it??
my biggest insecurity is that i cant cartwheel. what do i do when im full with glee? just fuckin stand there, it haunts me everyday
The only people to blame for children under the age of 10 having âaddictionsâ to smart phones, tablets, and technology in general is the parents. I donât want to hear people complain about their 4 year old knowing how to play with the settings on their ipad. You put the iPad in your kidâs life. You gave a 4 year old their own ipad. They learned to use it. You did that. Itâs your fault. Donât blame kidâs for poor parenting, incompetence, and laziness when it comes to raising children.
Hey you know that really disturbing thing where you yawn and your salivary gland shoots a concentrated spray of saliva out of one of its horrid nozzles like youâre a venom spitting snake for some godawful reason
What are your thoughts on Steve being able to wield mjolnir? Iâm not a âworthy steveâ believer.
mjolnir got confused cause it sensed steve kicked 2012 steveâs ass and went âwhoever punched that stuck up hoe deserves to lift me tbhâ
the switch from âa girl worth fighting forâ to coming upon the decimated village in mulan is THE MOST kick-in-the-teeth mood change IN ALL OF CINEMA
That scene shift did more for our generationâs understanding of the horror of war in ten seconds than Game of Thrones did in eight seasons, and it did it without showing us a single dead body.Â
Remember when they subtly but clearly told us a little girl had been murdered?
Itâs almost like you actually donât need to depict graphic murder, rape, and torture to elicit a serious and emotional response from your audience.Â
Avoid video games that use extrinsic motivation. A video game should at least mostly rely on intrinsic motivation, meaning that the playing of the game itself is the fun part, not the reward you get for playing the game. If you donât enjoy the gameplay, but you want to earn lootboxes, youâve fallen into the intentionally exploitative system operating within so many games nowadays, and you need to find another game, because youâre not having fun.
It doesnât sound serious, but this kind of thing can make depression way worse if youâve already got depression.
This post got me to stop playing Overwatch and Iâm eternally grateful.
Thatâs also a core difference between a game trying to exploit the human brainâs tendency toward gambling addiction and a game that exists to entertain.
Like, it may sound like Iâm reaching, but op described (pretty closely) the operation of gambling addictions. Itâs also why the depression aspect is so real. Youâre feeling a withdrawal, of a sort, when you canât play the game.
Have I already told the person this thing? Have I only thought about telling them? Have I only dreamt about telling them? Or am I going to tell them and find out I already told them 3 times before?
