I have noticed in recent years that men say âno homoâ way less often than they used to when I was in high school at least. Like Iâve witnessed in media and online and in person adult men just willing to say âI love youâ or âyou look greatâ to their guy friends without tacking a no homo onto the end of it.
And if you think thatâs not progress you werenât there in the trenches.
Iâve seen middle aged comedians on national tv sincerely say âI love youâ to their friends with no jokes attached. Nature is so slow to heal but it is possible, I tell you. We have planted trees and seen them survive.
(thanksgiving turkey meme) idk who needs to hear this but (you all do, it's important) the 20th anniversary of the publication of my immortal is March 6th 2026

When the Holidays Hurt: Navigating the Season with Chronic Illness
Navigating expectations, exhaustion, and guilt when chronic illness doesnât take a holiday
The holiday season is overwhelming for the average, able-bodied person. For those of us living with chronic illness, it can feel downright unbearable.
Weâre already running on limited energy, yet weâre expected to attend parties, gatherings, potlucks, and family events. Weâre already stretched financially from medical bills, prescriptions, and appointments, yet weâre expected to buy gifts, travel, and show up like nothing else exists.Â
And donât get me wrong â we want to participate. We want to see our people, laugh with them, and feel like we still belong.
But more often than not, the physical, emotional, and financial burnout we carry makes this time of year one of the hardest.
If the holidays feel heavy, youâre not failing â youâre responding normally to an already impossible load. Here are a few ways to make the season a little lighter:
Set boundaries (not just for yourself, but for others)
Boundaries arenât selfish â theyâre survival tools.
Decide in advance how many events you can realistically attend, then stop there.
Give yourself permission to leave early or cancel last-minute if your body says no.
Remember: a boundary doesnât need justification. âIâm not able to do thatâ is enough.
Have the difficult conversations
Avoiding hard conversations often costs more energy in the long run.
Be honest with trusted people about your limits before plans are made.
Let loved ones know what support actually looks like for you â whether thatâs shorter visits, quiet time, or no expectations at all.
Itâs okay if people donât fully understand; understanding is not a prerequisite for respecting your needs.
Pick and choose what matters most
You do not have to do everything to make the season meaningful.
Ask yourself: What would I regret missing most? Prioritize that.
Skip traditions that no longer serve you or cost too much physically or emotionally.
Give yourself permission to redefine what âthe holidaysâ look like this year.
Set a budget (and stick to it without guilt)
Your worth is not measured by how much you spend.
Set a realistic spending cap before shopping begins.
Consider alternatives: handwritten notes, homemade gifts, shared time, or simply showing up when you can.
Remember that medical expenses are real expenses â you are not âbehind,â you are surviving.
Plan ahead â but leave room for flexibility
Preparation can reduce stress, but rigidity can backfire.
Space out commitments so youâre not stacking high-energy days back-to-back.
Schedule rest days just like youâd schedule events.
Always leave yourself an âout.â Plans can changeâand thatâs okay.
This time of year is difficult for anyoneâbut especially for those of us navigating chronic health issues. And yet, here you are. You made it. You survived another year.
That matters.
Even if you spent most of the year on your couch. Even if productivity looked nothing like what you imagined. Even if simply getting out of bed was the biggest accomplishment some days â you still showed up. You are still here.
The world is better with you in it. Whether or not you believe that right now, someone else does. Someone needs you here. We need you here.
So please remind yourself this season: the holidays are harder for us â and you are doing the best you can. And that is more than enough.Â

have you noticed. ableds seem to operate on some kind of strange video game logic where doing something at least once unlocks the ability to do it with ease forever. if you can walk unaided once then you can walk! if you can eat that food you're intolerant or allergic to once then you no longer have that dietary requirement! if you can say one word at least once then you'll be fully verbal and speaking! like. it doesn't work like that bestie beloathed
every time i ask people if they do any new years resolutions its all ooooo i dont like making them bc i fail or ohhhhh no i couldnt keep up wiht that and then when they ask me and i tell them about Pasta Quest (i am eating as many different pasta shapes as possible in the space of a year) or when i did Fruit Adventures (every time i saw a fruit i had never eaten before id get one and eat it and read the wikipedia article about it) theyre like hang on i forgot you can make Fun Ones i want a fun one
while i actually made this post back in May, since New Yearâs is approaching hereâs some of my fave suggestions from the tags if youâre looking for inspiration!
other favorites from the notes I didnât get screenshots of at the time:
learn the names/species of local plants, bugs, and birds where you live (iNaturalist or Merlin the bird app help with this)
learn the rules to 10 new card games
steal the colored paint cards from hardware store paint aisles and use them to make art
try out every different apple variety you can find and rank them
similarly LOTS of people in the notes doing soup quests, and a few cheese quests also
similarly lots of people reading/watching certain amounts of media over the year, and tracking/rating it
track the number of cats/dogs/etc you see over the year
thereâs plenty more in there too :)

Oh hey, do you know what time it is? It is highly specific resource time!
Today we have the Royal School of Needlework Stitch Bank! There are HUNDREDS of stitch types in the RSN Stitch Bank.
And more added regularly, letâs look at a recent addition
I picked the first one in the 25 recently added Elizabethan stitches, the Elizabethan French Stitch
The stitch bank provides written and photo tutorials as well as a video option to learn to do it yourself. There are examples of the stitch in use, resources, references, everything but a needle and thread!

I looked at some of the tutorials last night and holy shit I'm so impressed! They're SO thorough! Not only do they have written and video instructions, but there are photo and illustration options for each image AND a "flip view" button so that left handed people can see all the images in reverse!
I am going to jump in and add, as you said they are very detailed in their directions, something that takes a lot of time and money.
If anyone who has enjoyed this resource has the means, I encourage you to adopt or sponsor a stitch to help keep this free to access. I know not everyone has the means to (fair, been there) but if you can, check out their sponsor options

BONUS:
This isn't Greta Thunbergâs fault, she couldnât have been a better ally, but itâs so disheartening how her kidnapping and mistreatment for five days have rallied so many people, when what she went through is only a fraction of a fraction of what thousands of Palestinian men, women, girls, and boys â who have been routinely kidnapped, tortured, and raped to unimaginably evil lengths for months or even years, often to the point of death, â have endured and are still enduring as we speak.
And I know thatâs the whole point of why she did what she did. She knew that, as a young high-profile White European girl, her mistreatment would result in more uproar and she intended to use that privilege to raise awareness of what is happening to Palestinians. Thatâs why the first thing she did after her release, when the press asked her to speak in detail about her own mistreatment, was to shift the conversation instead to how Israel continues to escalate its genocide against Palestinians.
I just wish people understood her message and gave the same energy toward helping Palestinians without waiting for a White Westerner to risk their life first.

growing up in chicago i always found it very insulting whenever i went to summer camp or whatever and suburban kids and rural kids made jokes about âchiraqâ and asked me if i needed to carry a gun to take the train (real question that was asked to me by an ADULT when i was 14). like it was rude and distasteful and obviously rooted in racism and it always pissed me off.
and now in this current moment iâm just so mad. even more mad than i was then bc i was RIGHT those jokes were EVIL that all the propaganda about big cities being these crime ridden warzones are now being used as a pretense to fucking invade my city and terrorize my community. chicago forever

fibercrafts are SO maddening cuz wdym I have to go to work tomorrow, I'm like a third of a way through making a whole ass fucking cape, don't you think I should be allowed to focus on what matters (my fucking cape)
the world has been horrifying recently but i have personally witnessed something that brought me joy
Every year, Californiaâs largest sheep and fiber festival, Lambtown, takes place in Dixon, CA. On the second day of Lambtown, teams of eight compete in a âsheep to shawlâ competition, where the teams must start the day with un-spun wool and end the day with a 72â woven shawl. Teams may âwarpâ a loom ahead of time (where you thread the loom with its foundation of parallel threads), but on the day of competition they must spin their wool into yarn and weave it into a complete shawl.
This year competition was stiff, and very very close, and the winning team finished their shawl with two and a half minutes to spare.
I frequently hear about âneeding to keep âpoliticsâ out of fiber arts, but art is inherently political.
These were beautiful, masterfully spun, woven, and finished shawls and that in itself is worthy of note.
But watching this team of eight would fight for hours, and pour their love for their community into their art was deeply moving and I am still reveling in the opportunity to have seen this win.
There are few things to rejoice in today, but they do exist. The horrors may persist, but so do we.
