A really important way to guard yourself from being swayed by reactionary ideas is to learn to distinguish between someone discussing an important issue, and someone vaguely gesturing at that important issue while talking about something else entirely.

Someone gesturing vaguely at an issue like a high cost of living doesn't legitimize their point if they're doing basically no real discussion of what factors influence the cost of living, and how their ideas relate to that.

Like. "You may not like it, but [reactionary figure] does bring up a lot of legitimate issues!" isn't a defense if that reactionary is just bringing the issues up to do malformed analysis that misrepresents the problem and proposes a bad solution.

Bringing up important issues and then doing a shit job of handling them is actually worse than not bringing up the issues in the first place! It means that serious discussions of the topic have to put in a bunch of effort to untangle the garbage that the reactionary dumped on it!
