ok, i have to say this before i say anything else about the rwrb movie:

when the book came out, it was groundbreaking. it was one of the first true queer rom coms. this movie is now even more groundbreaking.

yes, some depth and detail was lost from the book, but that’s bound to happen in any adaptation. but before we complain about that, let’s ask ourselves:

exactly how many fluffy, fairy tale, sexy, funny, sugary, queer romance movies are there? you could probably count them all on one hand, and most of them probably aren’t major studio releases.

queer people deserve silly romcom movies too. queer people deserve to see themselves in tender, uncensored intimate moments on screen too. and, correct me if i’m wrong, but i’m pretty sure this is the first time a major motion picture has explicitly mentioned truvada/PrEP and included a conversation between a parent and child about safe queer sex. like…queer people don’t get shit like this, and now we do. and that’s a big deal.

ngl the bit where coach singh playfully bumps mr ajayi and tells him to invite mr farouk and he eventually does it with a cute little smile and she's grinning sooo self-satisfied is the CUTEST bit of the whole show

because they're middle-aged adults and they're much more mature/put-together than the teen main characters, right? but they still grin bashfully and tease each other and get blushing and loving. just. idk man, to be an adult and still get mushy with feelings

Even though Imogen is such a small part of the show, the bits and pieces we get from her are so telling and make my heart ache for her. The way she stayed in her friend group even when Harry clearly didn't respect her. How even though she's close to Nick, she doesn't listen to his warning about Ben because she's clinging to anyone who makes her feel wanted. The lost and sad but unsurprised look on her face when everyone starts forming their Paris trip groups and she has no one to group with. The way she asks about joining Nick and his friends and is pleasantly shocked when they seem to actually want her there. She's so obviously a girl who's spent a long time if not her whole life feeling undesired and will latch onto affection wherever she can find it as a result, and though that part hurts, my favorite little side plot was her slowly integrating into the main group and seemingly finding real community and connection for the first time. I'm so glad Alice Oseman added her to the show. And admittedly I'm a bit tempted to write a little one-shot fleshing out her history and her becoming part of the group because she's important to me.
