Why Should You Adopt a Dog?
For this evening’s post, we wanted to focus a little on some of the reasons behind doing what we’re doing with Dog Database. Why are we encouraging the families of Ireland to adopt and rescue dogs rather than buying from farms or breeders?
Aside from the obvious, that by choosing to adopt, you save a vulnerable dog’s life and give them a second chance to share their love - why do we do what we do? Here are just five more reasons...
1. Choosing to rehome a dog or puppy will set you back only a fraction of the cost, if anything at all, of what you would be expected to pay for ‘professionally’ bred dogs. Many animal shelters and adoption centres are also charitable organisations and NPOs, which means that the rehoming fee you pay will go towards providing food, shelter and medical care for other dogs in need.
2. By adopting, you are doing your part to help put an end to the still widespread puppy farming industry in Ireland. These farms thrive because there is a demand, one which you can lessen by getting your pet from a shelter instead of from ever-popular online ads.
3. The high numbers of dogs in Irish animal shelters means that you will have a huge variety of breeds and personalities to choose from to best suit your lifestyle and needs, and the needs of the dog!
4. The majority of dogs looking for their forever home are slightly older, meaning you will more than likely get to skip the dreaded house training stage we associate with getting a new puppy. This is a huge benefit for those of you with demanding schedules and busy households.
5. Many Irish shelters now offer rehabilitation and training services for the dogs in their care as well as extensive medical care, meaning that chances are you will be taking home a healthy, happy and very obedient dog.
