sometimes comics are good.
Itās January 2nd, 2020 and I am going to attempt to take book/reading/media blogging seriously. Weāll see how long this lasts. Itās an easy thing to say, on winter break, that Iām going to actively contribute content to the world. But once I go back to work next week, I know it will consume my every waking moment in the way that teaching inevitably does, no matter how many boundaries you try to set to create that mystical āwork-life-balanceā that is reserved for people who made smarter career choices than I did.
Sorry, where was I?
Right. The first few days of January has everyone in any reading community talking about goals and resolutions. Iāve set my Goodreads goal as 100, like I do every year until it looks completely untenable and I end up lowering it in December. Hereās where I have run into a problem every year. Do I count comics towards my Goodreads reading goal? Goodreads certainly doesnāt make it easy. Itās hard to search for single issue comics a lot of the time (because Goodreads search engine is--how do I put this kindly?--itās not great, friend.) I think my biggest problem with just counting them towards my goal is that it falsely inflates my numbers. āMason read 700 books this year?! Wow!ā That looks cool until you realize that 710 of those books are 20-page comics with like 500 words across the pages tops.
So, my plan this year is to add comics to my count as TPBS. That always feels a little less like cheating. So, instead of āCaptain Marvel #1-5ā³ Iāll just add āCaptain Marvel Vol 1 (2019).ā
One major problem with this is that, unlike lots of other kinds of books, TPBS donāt get added to the Goodreads database very far in advance--if they get added at all. Currently, I have give TPBS in my currently reading section, but when I searched for Basketful of Heads to add, they only have the three issues that have currently been released (despite the fact that 6 or 7 issues have been solicited--but thatās another matter entirely).
So, maybe I will just add the first book of the TPB until the actual trade gets listed. Though, another problem with this is that it will inevitably mean I have about 20 books on my currently read list at any given point and that seems like a lot.
I wish there was a better way to keep track of comics with a community built in as solid as Goodreads. I need a Goodreads but for comics.
Is there anyone out there who has found a solid way to add single issue comics into their reading count for the year? Someone help me out. Maybe itās just the kind of thing that there really is no perfect answer to.

āIn the woods the Tox is still wild. No girls for it to pick apart, so it got into everything else. Out there it blossoms and spreads with a kind of joy. Unbridled and vicious and free.ā Hi can all YA please aspire to be as literary and wonderful as WILDER GIRLS? Thanks.
