i.
Boss tosses the sand bag not to Jatne, but at him.
âHurry up,â Boss snapped.
Jatne threw down the bag and glared back at the other commando. The suns set quickly on this planet, and with nightfall would come the rain. The rest of Delta and Meshkad squads were busy doing the same thing, stacking sand bags, but somehow Jatne had taken up a position next to the one commando out of all of them he couldnât stand.
âYou hurry up,â Jatne mumbled in reply.
// [cracks knuckles] 24 drabbles down, 18 to go. ALL FOR BOSS
Sev: patpat âIâll teach you how to swearâŚâŚâŚin bed.â
Jatne: [imagines the two of them in a bed wearing jammies and saying bad words] ok!
A pause in the doorway, the entrance opening easily on his approach â not even needing to key in the code anymore. Probably a sign heâd come around too often, but it hardly mattered. After all: he brought food.Â
âDelivery,â he said with a shrug, hefting the box held in both hands. âBreakfast, courtesy of one short and angry Boss is so fond of.â
The box was taken with gentle care and set on the counter top. A small smile, even though Jaro wasnât exactly sure who Mereel was referring to. On Mandalore that could have been several people. âThank you. Do you accept caf for your delivery fee?â
@tapcaftogo
Jaro paused with the mug of caf half lifted to his lips. âOh,â he said dumbly. That wasnât Boss. But he was in Bossâs house. âHey... Mereel?â

âThatâs my EMP grenade.â
Jatne made no indication to let the round grenade go as Bossâs hand closed around it. Only after a second did Jatne let the Delta take it.
âDid they not teach your batch how to say please?â Jatne grumbled.
--
It was very late when Jatne returned from patrol, and all he wanted was to kit down and get some shut-eye. First the bucket, placed gently on the ground. Then his deece, and his belt. Next came his pack, which got tangled on something, and suddenly became impossible to remove--
Hands lifted the pack up and Jatne slipped his arms out of the straps. When he turned, he didnât expect to see the orange-clad commando standing there.
âThanks, I--owe you one.â
--
âWhereâve you been?â Oni asked. Morj made a play in their sabacc game, then lifted his gaze to the squad sniper.
âScrubbing detail. Diâkutla Delta.â Jatne threw himself onto his bunk and mumbled further expletives into his pillow.
--
âWhatâs your problem with Delta-38, anyway, Jatâika?â
It was best to be careful what was said around Gev, as the man couldnât keep any gossip to himself. So Jatne shrugged. âWrong place, wrong time. We rubbed each other the wrong way.â
Gev snorted.
âShut up, Gev.â
{{ 2/7 @deluxemodel asked: Ⲡ [meme]
five times my muse thought about kissing yours, and the one time they did
âYou havenât kissed anybody in your whole life, have you?â
Because of course Jatne would ask.
Jaro scratched the back of his head. âWell, no.â
âEver, yâknow, thought about it?â
A cold night and a long walk without a jacket. The friendly hand on his shoulder, the man who dropped everything to help him--Â âMaybe.â
--
âRemember that time when we got scrubbing detail for fighting?â Jaro asked.
Bossâs lips curled into a rare smile. He chuckled at the memory and his eyes squinted shut as he broke into full-on laughter. Jaro watched the curve of Bossâs mouth, the wrinkles on the sides of his face. He blinked.
âYeah, I remember that, you diâkut.â
--
Jaro took over the speeder controls just after midnight. A few more hours of driving and they could rest for the night. Boss curled up in the passenger seat and laid his head against the back of the chair. Soon, the slow and controlled breaths of sleep took him. He looked peaceful, relaxed, even, as the tension in his brow vanished into smooth skin. Jaro looked back at the viewscreen and folded in his lips. Kept on driving.
--
âTheyâll forgive you.â
âBut I left--â
âStop. Theyâre your brothers. Itâll be okay, Jarâika.â
Boss reached out and cupped the side of Jaroâs face with his hand. Jaro lifted his gaze from the floor, still not convinced, but more than before. Their eyes locked. Bossâs brow furrowed in earnest concern. More reassuring than ever was his touch. Jaro sucked in a breath. âYouâre right.â
--
The first warm night of the season, and they started a bonfire out back. Two cold ales and a couple of chairs. They didnât need to share words, only the warmth from the fire, and the stars above. Jaro looked over at Boss after a while and caught a pensive look angled up at the sky. Even in the dark, he sensed a sadness in his brother, a longing. Jaro swallowed the lump in his throat and stared instead into the fire.

The larty leveled out and the pit of Jatneâs stomach returned to normal. He took a breath, turned to look at Gev, who simply shook his head. The mission exhausted them--the disappointment even more so.
It was a clear shot.
Jatne opened a channel to Delta-38. Delta could get a good laugh out of this, with the hit to Jatneâs stats, and all. No, better not.
--
Click. Jatne snapped a still holo of the shop sign. Sevâs Onestop. He grinned to himself, thought about sending it over to Delta Squad, but talked himself down in the same second.
âAw, câmon. If you donât, I will,â said Oni.
âOkay. You do it, then.â
--
They said Delta made it off Imperial City, and Jatne wondered if they would also turn up at this Kyrimorut place. Jatne tossed his com back and forth between his hands, debating. A quick message to Boss, to check in... No, ought to wait.
--
The bed in Amâbuirâs basement is more comfortable than anything Jaro had ever slept on, and yet there he was, staring at the ceiling. When they first met up again on Mandalore, Boss had told him he could contact him any time. He needed someone to talk to, someone who knew--
He tossed himself onto his side, pulled one of the pillows over his head.
--
His brother, and keeper, was leaning all of his weight on the bar as he talked with a Twiâlek who, surprisingly, seemed interested. She was taller than Jatne--but who wasnât taller than the Meshkad--and their one-on-one conversation left Jaro to sit by himself at the bar. The bartender seemed to know where he came from and slid another ale his way with a wink. âOn the house.â
Grinning, Jaro thanked the bartender, then went for his com.
Boss, are you free? I think I might need a ride home, vod...

âYou say that itâs a joke but I have a feeling itâs not.â Boss smirked as the act dropped. Nice for both of them to be loosening up.
Well, it was nice.
âHow about a triple?â He leaned over to grab the bottle, refilling both glasses as he said he would with the amount he deemed proper, not Jaro. No offense meant to the other man, of course.
âOn the house, even.â
âIt is a joke, donât worry. Canât be hurling my guts out when we get there.â Jaro watched as Boss poured the amber liquid. Truth be told, he had never really had much to drink. Heâd watched Jatne drink and gotten an observational experience with alcohol, but beyond a pint of ale and the occasional tihaar, Jaro didnât know much.
Lifting his glass in a silent toast, Jaro drank--a big gulp, and he managed to swallow without coughing too badly. He made a wince and then nodded, as if giving his approval to the burning sensation.
Already, he was feeling lighter and a bit dizzy, as if he was floating. Kind of like when a larty took a dive, feeling both weightless and at the mercy of gravity all at once. Jaro snorted to himself. That didnât make any sense. Then he giggled. His hand covered his mouth--what an odd way to laugh--but the giggles wouldnât stop.
âI just thought of something stupid, now I canât stop laughing.â
And he still had a lot of tihaar to go.
En Route to Triple Zero, 403 Days After the Battle of Geonosis
âItâs bad, isnât it?â
Kadenâs voice was thin. The Jedi would not look at the wound as Harsh carefully peeled back the fabric of his robe. The wound started at the top of his shoulder and went across the top of his chest just past the collarbone in an arc. The burn was deep.
âI can tell by the look on your face.â Kaden sucked in air between his teeth as Harsh jabbed him with the painkiller.
âYou always said you wanted a battle scar.â
The Jediâs eyes fluttered shut, his body tensed as Harsh applied the first bacta pad. He heard the Jedi swear, and he smirked.
âYouâre gonna be fine,â Harsh assured him.
âForce-damned Umbaran.â Kaden dared to look over at Harsh and regretted it, looking immediately to the other side of the small medbay where a clone commando rested. The medical droid was tending to him.
âVery un-Jedi like, sir.â Harsh finished placing the bacta pads and stood up straight, also drawing his attention to the unconscious clone.
âHeâs not okay,â Kaden said quietly. He adjusted himself in the chair, wanting to place a hand on top of the wound, but Harsh slapped him away with a donât touch.
The commandoâs vitals seemed to be reading stable. RC-1788 had taken a blaster bolt shot to the side of his head, and his leg was broken. The blaster wound was only a few hours old, but the leg would have to goâin Harshâs professional opinion. But the commando called Jatne would live.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
Kaden shook his head. He had that look on his face like he was watching a horrible accident that no one else could see. âHe just isnât.â
âOh no. I just want to have the scenario recreated, not this one-off deal.â
âRight. And will there be any â360 No Scopesâ allowed, Mr. Perfect?â
âWhoâs up for a sniper challenge?â
âThis guy.â
âDamn straight you are. Though, just donât consider this our rematch.â
"Why? Afraid I'll beat you?"
âWhoâs up for a sniper challenge?â
"This guy."
