Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography (ed. Blake Gutt and Alicia Spencer-Hall) is now available open access! This is great news because this book was super expensive, but it's such an important piece of work for premodern queer and gender studies.

The translators preface to this book is so cartoonishly homophobic that I would’ve believed it was written by Peter Damian himself. For someone so opposed to homosexuality in the church, Hoffman sure was sucking Damian’s dick with all the praise he was giving him. Unfortunately this really is the best English translation of The Book of Gomorrah that I’ve read, and Hoffman’s footnotes in the translation were incredibly useful too. I would recommend this work to anyone looking for an English translation of The Book of Gomorrah, but maybe pirate it, pick it up from a library or get it second hand like I did.

I’ve only read the introduction to the invention of sodomy so far but I’m really enjoying the way Mark Jordan writes. I’m also looking forward to reading Matthew Hoffman’s translation of the book of Gomorrah because I’ve seen some really good reviews for his translation work 👀

small things to add to a hand written letter:

a teabag of your favourite tea

heart shaped note with cute drawings

stickers on the outside of the letter, and inside

handmade paper doll

small print or postcard

a sketch or a little painting or a poem

glitter or sequins or pearls or buttons

small candies or bubblegum

cut out magazine pictures or articles

folded paper, like origami

textile like small ribbons or clothing patches

coins or flat things found in a souvenir shop

pressed flower or leaf

Tips for Reading with ADHD

(or without ADHD, if they help regardless)

Physical print:

cover the page with a piece of paper and reveal lines/paragraphs as you read them

use a highlighter to emphasize important/interesting parts

take notes as you go to be physically engaged with the material

Digital media:

copy and paste the text into a doc/word processor

change the font size/style/colour to something more legible

make your own paragraphs and spacing

copy and paste one paragraph at a time to isolate them from the distraction of the rest of the text

install a browser extension like BeeLine Reader or Mercury Reader

zoom in on the page and scroll slowly so you’re revealing lines as you read them

physically cover the screen and reveal lines as you read them

if you do better with physical media, print it out or find a physical copy

Both:

read out loud

pace, move around, or use a fidget while reading

set a timer for 5 minutes and read in small chunks with breaks in between

divide the material into sections and read one section at a time with breaks in between

have another person, audio book, or text-to-speech program read it aloud as you follow along

🌟 genuinely want to better the world with your education not just dangle it over people as part of a god complex or use it to help gatekeep knowledge

🌟 just generally kinda feel like academia wasnt really built for you but you are determined to make it so that it is, if not for yourself then for future generations at the very least

I started reading The Shape of Sex by Leah DeVun a few days ago and I’m really enjoying it so far! It might seem like a small detail but they always treat the medieval people they’re writing about with respect as complex human beings who lived real lives, and some medieval historians don’t always manage that in their writings. Would definitely recommend this book if it sounds at all interesting to you and I’m very excited to read more of it!

I’ve been using my bullet journal for about 2 weeks now and oogh I love it... I would absolutely recommend this method to anyone else who has adhd related memory issues like me, and it’s been really helping me get tasks done too because crossing things off my lists is super rewarding to my brain! I’m definitely going to keep using this journal, this has been a super useful tool for helping me manage my adhd so far! 🥰 I think it’s kind of a multi purpose journal now instead of just a bullet journal but it works for me and that’s all that matters tbh 😌
