Chained... What will SQQ do now?
An old friend mentioned planning Nimbus to me today...
I miss planning Nimbus. I don’t miss the wank and criticisms by people who had no idea what we were doing (a fan-created nonprofit? To talk about canon *and* fandom IN REAL LIFE? Danger, illegal, hotbed for wank, and how dare you think you can do this without JKR’s permission?) and didn’t understand it, but I miss the process of creating something completely brand new and utterly untried and groundbreaking, because it really and completely was and only in retrospect do I really get the import of that. Because impact grows like ripples in a pond where dwells a Giant Squid, pretty much every US-located fan-created event derives, in some way, from what we did, from the security team gauntlets and sleepless nights to our programming Calls for Proposals, our policies on teens being allowed in, and homophobia being barred from the vendor room.
(Just to show how time progresses, one of the things we showed at the Armchair Slash movie night was the deleted scenes from Chamber of Secrets, including The Malfoys In Nocturne Alley; we played them off a DVD, but many of the people attending hadn’t seen the scenes before because they owned - or had rented it from Blockbuster - on VHS, which didn’t have the deleted scenes. Life, pre-YouTube.)
Nimbus - 2003 flashback! In the lead-up to Ascendio, we’ve uploaded the program summaries from the first Harry Potter fancon on Smashwords and you can read a selection of them here!
I think there are maybe ten people on tumblr who were at Nimbus?
About a decade ago, I attended Nibmus 2003 – one of the first Harry Potter conventions. I got attendees to sign their LJ usernames to a piece of bristol board so I could make a list to post on LJ later. I just found that piece of bristol board.
As a friend of mine pointed out, this is a piece of fandom history. MsScribe left a kiss mark. Cassandra Clare signed some old version of her username (epicyclical). Aja’s on this. And lots of other people.
I have no idea what to do with this. I’d just recycle it, but I figure that there’s got to be someone out there who wants it/knows someone who could maybe auction it off for charity? IDK. Thoughts? Ideas? Anyone actually want this?
I now have this poster, somewhere in a storage unit. It’s been 20 years since Nimbus - 2003 and so many of my memories about the event are blurred. As those of you who were there know, I spent about a third of the convention at convention events, abc the rest of it in the staff room with my then seven week old (Middle Child, Large Adult Son). Very few people had digital cameras, and nobody had cameras on their phones, so the number of photos from the event is, unfortunately, really small. But that’s probably a good thing.
It still feels like a magical thing to me that almost 600 fandomers came down to Disney’s Swan, which was relatively cheap, because we booked the hotel and space in the aftermath of 9/11, before travel had really picked up again, in an era where staying anonymous online was standard, and there was still a bit of a concern, especially among people‘s families, that everybody else on the Internet was a potential ax murderer. so many of us built such strong friendships during the planning process, and there were people who were there, including Emerson and Sabs, who I miss every day.
It’s half a lifetime ago for probably a third of the people who attended. And in 10 years, it’ll be half a lifetime for almost all of the rest of us. it’s a moment where we set the template for what people who knew each other online, and cared about each other online and off could put together via emails and phone calls, unbeholden to any corporation or source creator. And I’m really proud of that part.
I’m pretty sure that at least two marriages exist because of this event. And 1 million connections of friendship. And that is the true power of magic.
Hey OP, any news on the poster? I suspect the OTW's Open Doors would be very interested in preserving it!
Harry Potter, nice to meet you again
For the first time since the early 2010’s, I’m engaging with the Harry Potter series again.
Back in Ye Olde Days, I was active in the Harry Potter fandom. I discovered the series in 2002, when I rented the first movie from Netflix -- remember when Netflix sent you DVD’s in the mail in those red envelopes? I was on sabbatical from my teaching job at the time, so I drove to the nearby Borders -- again, remember when brick-and-mortar bookstores were a thing? -- and bought a boxed set of the first three books, because that was all that had been published at the time. I read the three books over a 48-hour period and barely noticed the time passing.
I was just starting to explore this newfangled thing called The Internet, having recently escaped America Online’s walled garden. I was checking out Yahoo! one afternoon and came across a Yahoo! Group called Harry Potter for Grownups, which turned out to be one of the early online epicenters for adult HP fandom. Reading through the posts there brought me to a bunch of things, including HP fanfiction (both gen and slash), LiveJournal (which had an active HP fandom community at the time), and the first ever HP fan convention, Nimbus, which took place in July 2003. I achieved my 15 minutes of fandom fame at Nimbus, when I took part in a panel discussion about slash in front of a packed ballroom full of slash fans and authors.
I stayed active in the fandom until 2012 or so. Hobbies come and go with me, and my interest dropped significantly after the publication of Half-Blood Prince, to the point that I read Deathly Hallows and saw the last two movies more out of a sense of perceived obligation to finish the series than an actual desire to find out how it ended. I attended the fandom convention Ascendio in 2012, had a fantastic time, and decided on the plane back home that that was how I wanted my personal Harry Potter journey to end.
Fast forward to about a week ago. I was digging through my laptop’s hard drive trying to clear up some storage space, and I stumbled upon the files for all 7 of the Harry Potter audio books (the US version). I had purchasedl the audiobooks on CD when they first came out, and I had ripped them all into iTunes so I could listen to them on my various iPod-like devices. I’m surprised I hadn’t deleted them at some point.
Nowadays, I listen to a lot of audio books, both when I’m working at my desk and during workouts. So a few days ago, I started listening to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I’m curious to see what I remember, what I’ve forgotten, and whether anything lands differently with me now than it did the first time around.
And as a possible side quest, I might also rewatch each film after I’m done with the audiobook.
As I write this, I just finished Chapter 7 of Sorcerer’s Stone. Harry has made it to Hogwarts and been sorted by the Sorting Hat, and he just fell asleep in the dorm on his first night.
It feels like I’m reconnecting with an old friend whom I used to know very well, but our lives have taken us in different directions.
Hey, Todoroki, ...
… your infatuation is showing.
The revised version made me think of an AU where they meet in Xianle when they're both teen, Xie Lian as a prince and Hua Cheng as a young noble who's an absolute menace. More of my insanity in the tags

OVA so good
This is a super long shot, but I'm looking for an older Thorki fic. I read it on AO3 sometime around 2013. It was an AU in which Thorki were not raised together (possibly Jotun!Loki). The only thing I remember for sure is at the end, Loki brings Thor and his parents to a massive hoard of treasure he'd collected and Frigga tells Thor it's meant to be a bride price/engagement gift so Loki can marry Thor. I *think* Thor might have also called Loki "magpie" in it? Because he was always collecting treasures? It may have been a one-shot, and Thorki may have defeated a dragon together. The fic probably wasn't explicit, and likely over 10k words (maybe in the 10-30k range).
Any help will be greatly appreciated! 😁
