âWell, congratulations. Next few year is going to be about that, trust me.â
âLooking forward to it. At least Iâm a real life adult now.â
âSo, howâs higher education?â
âDecent. We havenât had much actual education yet- itâs mainly learning names and getting lost.â
âNice to see you, too.â
âSorry, but I have better things to do than hang around with an old friend whoâs fucking my cousin.â Mini stared Ally down coldly for as long as she could handle. âKidding!â Her face cracked into a grin as she swept her still petite friend into a hug. âItâs been months!â She exclaimed breathlessly as she let Ally go.
âIts fine. If this is a bad time, I can just come back later.â
âNo! Not at all, not at all. I just- have all this- paperwork⊠ah, forget it. How are you?â
âCan I suggest a day planner any louder?â
âYou sure can. Will I listen? Probably not. Itâs a lovely gesture though.â
âWould you care for a comb for your hair?â
âDo I need one?â Mini ran her fingers through her hair. âOh my god. Thatâs probably a good idea, actually.â
ââCome inâ? Dominique, since when did Hogwarts hire you as a bouncer?â
âI meant like... the room. Yâknow, other people donât mind when I say dumb stuff. They think itâs adorable.â
âOh fuck, itâs Tuesday already? I had to- Oh my god, that was rude, Iâm so sorry... come in!â
Jamesâ eyes widened as he listened to Dominique speaking, frowning in various parts or the story and blinking in others. He was taken aback to say the least as he attempted to process what he was hearing, highlighting the fact that he had no idea where to start.. âDid you like kissing her? Did she like kissing you?â The boy questioned, confusion settling onto his features as he considered it. Heâd always assumed their friendship was strictly platonic, but clearly heâd been missing something and even then, he cared a great deal less about that and more about the fact that sheâd kissed Sawyer. âActually no, forget that, why would she kiss Burwell?â Shaking his head in disbelief, he leant back against a desk, running a hard through his hair as though to try and order his thoughts. He had so many questions to pose, but he knew he ought not to. Did she like kissing Sawyer? Did she feel guilty for it? âI saw her this morning, she seemed.. normal, but you shouldnât have left her alone. She was drunk and probably a tad upset since you upped and left after she snogged you. Why didnât you come and find me?â
Mini was relieved, of course- sheâd been worrying about Ally since the morning. But now that sheâd said everything she felt... guilty. Sheâd left her best friend alone, drunk and upset and- fuck, sheâd told James about Ally kissing Sawyer. She looked away from her cousin as she started to talk. âUm... I donât think she liked it. I donât think I liked it either.â She furrowed her brows, forcing herself to meet Jamesâ gaze again. âYou donât have to worry about Sawyer, you know. She regretted it.â At least Ally was ok, and not off crying in a bathroom somewhere. She probably didnât really care, actually- she was probably off with some other friends, not giving it a second thought. âI thought- she said she was fine, James. And no offence, but even if I had gotten someone to help I doubt it would have been one of th boys she was getting drunk about in the first place.â
âI figured.â A little smug, yes, but she deserved to be a little smug right now. âOf course, really. I havenât the skills for it. Nor do I have the âHit Wizardâ bravery. I could never do what they or the Aurors do.â Rose smiled at her cousin and sped walk to instead be walking side-by-side with the only slightly older girl. âCongratulations, by the way. You know weâre all proud of you and the others for finishing the year with all thatâs been happening. Another batch of Weasleys out the door.â
âTrue- I could never imagine you killing anyone. But thatâs why youâd be so great at it.â Mini slung her arm around her cousinâs shoulder- she may be grown up now but she was still shorter than her. âI donât know if we really deserve that. We fucked around quite a bitâ She smiled. âBut thank you. Your turn next!â
âMoney and tradition is what corrupted my familyâ
âMaybe- but they were already pretty fucking evilâ Miniâs eyes widened. âOh my god, Iâm so sorry- that was so rude.â
âOh, right.â James said plainly, confusion settling onto his features as he surveyed his cousin for any hint of what she was hiding. âNo, nothing at all. Should she have?â His mind was going into overdrive considering the possibilities, was she hurt and he hadnât noticed? Had she gotten herself into trouble and been too afraid to ask for his help? âDonât fuck about Mini, just tell me what this is about.â
Spitting it out was feeling a lot harder than she had anticipated. James looked so... serious. He was never like this- not around her, at least. Theyâd always been close, but more of a âtell-each-other-when-they-lost-their-virginitiesâ close than a âtalk-about-their-deepest-feelingsâ close. She took a deep breath. âSo I found Ally in a corridor the other day and Iâm pretty sure she was drunk but she was also really sad and she was talking about how she thinks that Frank thinks sheâs a baby or something and also how she had a fight with you but Iâm not really sure what that was about. Anyway, I found her and she was a bit of a shitshow so of course I sat with her and we talked for a while but then she kissed me- properly on the mouth, not just on the cheek or something. So then I got kind of freaked out and left sort of quickly so now I donât really know whatâs going on but sheâs been kind of weird for a while now but I donât know if itâs NEWTs or that time she kissed Burwell or whatever but Iâm really worried.â Mini paused for a second, running out of air. âOh- and I havenât seen her since that night so I have no fucking clue where she is or what sheâs doing.â
âWell, James is a year older than me and heâs still a child soâŠâ Rose titled her head slightly, wondering not for the first how her cousin could be so ridiculous. Mini was lovable, so lovable, but also so ridiculous. Seventh year not mattering, Rose being clever. Such a ridiculous girl. âThank you. Hit Wizard isnât the career for me, though. How was your seventh year, anyway? I feel as though we hardly talked which is sad, but I understand.â
âWell... damn, I canât argue with that. You win, big girl.â A vivid picture flashed into Miniâs mind of Rose- tiny little Rose who stressed when she was a few minutes late to breakfast- dressed in all black, sneaking around dark castles with about twenty wands strapped to her back. âReally? Thatâs such a shame. No-one would suspect you, you donât really have that Hit Wizard look.â Mini pursed her lips, thinking back on the last year. âIt was fine, I guess. Everyone else seemed so stressed about exams and all the other stuff thatâs been going on, so it wasnât exactly how I imagined... but I made it, right?â
âYou arenât even that much older.â A loud, necessary sigh once the word âexamâ was said. âThe point isnât just to pass. Acing? Acing is the goal. Well. For me at least, Iâm not saying you or anyone else has to ace their exams. But yeah, non-verbals are rather unnecessary unless youâre becoming a Hit Wizard.â
âIâm a whole year older. We both know how much can happen in a year.â Miniâs smile dropped for a second. It wasnât worth thinking about, especially not right now. She shook her head slightly, giggling. âDonât worry, Rosie, everyone knows you ace all your exams anyway. Youâre definitely clever enough to be a Hit Wizard already, I think. Who needs seventh yearâ
âAlice?â James frowned, Alice never got herself into trouble, so he could only assume he was receiving the Iâll-kill-you-if-you-hurt-her talk, even if it was completely unnecessary. Tugging lightly at her arm, he directed them to the nearest empty classroom, before turning his attention back to his cousin. âWhatâs this about, Mini? Itâd better not be a lecture.â
âNo, no, nothing like that.â Normally Mini would have loved to have had something to lecture James about- not that he never did stupid things, but it always seemed that sheâd done something dumb just a day or two before that he could throw right back at her- but this time she just didnât have the energy. âItâs just- has she said anything to you? About... something that happened?â
âAh, youâre one of those no-second-draft, go-big-or-go-home people.â
âOh yeah, big time. Itâs a blessing and a curse- mainly a curse though, I reckon.â
