most recent episode's A-plot was dumb and played-out but i sortof forgive it for being that way just because of that last moment when rick shows up. morty spends the entire episode agonising over and resisting being treated like a dog but the second rick is there he slots right into being that man's dog without question.

I love-hate the “you’re not going to inherit anything from me” at the beginning paired with the “it’s a genetic disease” at the end; Morty IS going to inherit something from Rick after all.

HOLY SHIT WHAT AN EPISODE!!!!!!

#rick and morty #minor spoilers 2 follow!!!!#the action was SOOOOO clean and well-animated #engaging and funny and fucking awesome to watch #the fucking running sound effect of rick's legs. and the fact that emorty almost got him....#also the whole framing of the jealousy and the 'crush' felt natural and not like shock-value incest stuff?#like it just felt like an organic mean-spirited way for all three of them to frame how each morty is acting #like even the fight rick and morty had in the cold open was very tactile and fun and cute. the stupid roll away as rick says ITS FINE.#excellent stuff across the board. it was funny it was cathartic it was fresh it was in-character it was visually excellent.#also they got rid of the omega device at the exact right moment #they only introduced it what in s7? but reintroducing it and getting rid of it this episode was a wise choice #because it is simply too high level of a threat for any character to wield #so so so good. i wonder if emorty is gonna make it back this season #or if theyre still sticking to the one episode in an odd season rule for him #rick #morty #rick and morty s9

I hate to say it, but I don't think Morty would've been THAT much better off without Rick. If Rick never showed up, his parents would've kept neglecting him, his classmates would've kept ignoring him, and he would've grown up to be a sad, lonely adult with a dead-end job and a vague sense of bitterness toward the people who wronged him.

That doesn't mean Rick's abuse was GOOD for him, but Rick didn't exactly barge into a happy childhood, either. Morty was doomed to be a non-factor in everyone's lives.

#thisssssss #it's the beautiful catch-22 of abuse in this show. they are not good for each other overall but they HAVE been good for each other sometime #and so neither of them can truly wash their hands of each other.#rick #morty

it is actually crazy that s8 ends with rick removing diane from his head but because it's the last episode we don't know yet the full extent of the consequences this is going to have. even in the short term it's clear rick has some regrets around this and the ending of him "making his peace with it" by sending memory rick and diane out into space is clearly a thread they've left open on purpose in case they want to return to it someday (rick says he's going to mindblow himself, but we have yet to see him actually do this).

i do expect the writers are using this as a chance to shirk the weight of the dead wife backstory, but i also think there's plenty of room for exploration of the impact this has had on rick. just because this plot point was made to push rick's character arc forwards doesn't mean it's going to progress without hiccups
