My distant grandfather was one of three chiefs around the time when the original aid was sent to Ireland— it’s a beautiful piece of history that ties Ireland to Native Americans (namely the Choctaw Nation) in a beautiful and profound way. Ireland has even recently set up a scholarship for Choctaw students to study in Ireland as part of the two nations deep history.
The Choctaw Nation had recently in its history (around the 1830s) gone through the Trail of Tears, and were hardly in a position to help any others while suffering so greatly. Yet, when news of the famine in Ireland surfaced, the Choctaw Nation gave more in aid than both the US and UK combined.

When ICE launched a hotline for reporting undocumented immigrants, people flooded the hotline to call in pranks to slow down the system. The plan picked up even more steam as the people discovered …

The calls nearly brought the system to a halt, leaving operators unable to answer almost all incoming calls during the protest. ICE attempted to contain the narrative, and lie to the public about the impact of the prank.
In the first days of operation, Internal reports from ICE describe an “overwhelming” amount of calls. The day after the hotline was launched, ICE received more than 16,000 calls. Of those, only 260 could be answered. Callers in queue waited as long as 79 minutes to reach an operator. An official noted that if the rate of calls were to continue, ICE would need an additional 400 operators to field the hotline.”
This is a very old Islamic tradition, still alive in parts of Turkey. When a white blanket of snow covers everything - people go to the tops of mountains peaks and scatter seeds and food for the birds through the snowing season so as not to let the birds die of starvation. Planned Parenthood has long been known as a provider of reproductive healthcare and education for women. Recently, however, the organization has expanded its mission, inaugurating programs specifically for gay men and trans people.
“Newer programs for gay men involve PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a therapy regimen of medication that serves as a preventative to HIV infection.
“We’ve just started doing PrEP fairly recently,” said Phebe Brandt, clinician at the Planned Parenthood (PP) at 1144 Locust St. in Center City. “We started [PrEP] out at our Norristown office in the spring, and we started here just a few months ago.”
“We do all the counseling around it,” Brandt said. “We do all the testing that’s necessary. We actually provide prescriptions. And if people don’t have insurance and need to go through the program through Giliad to pay for it, we facilitate the applications for that.”
The implementation of PP’s PrEP program was actually inspired by another recent program expansion.
“We started providing hormone therapy for trans folks over a year ago, the summer of 2017,” said Brandt. “We soon realized that we were doing a disservice to our patients because we realized that trans folks who have sex with men are at such high risk for acquiring HIV, it was a disservice to them to not offer PrEP.” Brandt said currently those services are only offered at the Norristown center, but she expects those services to expand to other locations soon.
“We’ve always provided services for gay men,” Brandt said. “We’ve always provided STD testing and treatment for many, many years. We’ve been providing HIV testing for as long as it’s been available. We offer rapid testing too.”
One of the most needed programs PP has added provides counseling, education and clinical services to trans people who are starting hormone therapy.
An important and often-necessary part of the counseling process involves making a genuine gender-identity diagnosis. “For those with insurance,” Brandt cautioned, “we actually have to use the gender-dysphoria diagnosis code in order to get the therapy covered.”
“We don’t want to be gatekeepers, so if the client feels they are in that place and need to start hormones, unless there’s a medical reason not to, we can start them. We only take on those who are 18 and over. Under 18, we refer them elsewhere.”
Right now, PP’s services for trans people are only available at PP’s Center City and Pottstown locations, but could expand to West Chester soon.”
