I just finished System Collapse and have so many feelings about it.

Firstly, this is the first in the series to make me actually cry while I was gardening. I was just...really moved by the whole creating the documentary sequence. The dramatic and beautiful way the story makes it look like they're backed into a corner and then a solution shows itself.

The way the book perfectly portrayed that feeling of when you HAVE all the materials and everything you want to say inside you already and then it all just comes together beautifully. And the fact that it's a group project that everyone there pitches in on it from organizing the data, knowing the history and law, being willing to speak on traumatic personal experiences, citing the sources (heavily implied the bot guarding the colony would NOT have been satisfied if they hadn't backed up their claims), making sure it's entertaining to a human audience, just everything. And in particular the way Murderbot has been beating itself up for subpar performance and repeatedly wondering if it was even worth it for it to be there but this scene not only establishing that this was Murderbot's idea but that it required it specifically because in that moment they NEEDED someone who 1) was a visual media fanatic and knew what was going to work to make a show people would actually want to watch, 2) knew firsthand how bad being owned by one of the corporations and therefore able to better connect with the people considering it for themselves, and 3) was the type of bot to go around befriending other bots such as the colony's guardian (including patiently continuing to chat and answer its questions after getting the info it wanted despite the language barrier which clearly made a good impression on it) so they could just send it to everyone in the colony. And then it worked. No one accidentally selling themselves into slavery. The narrative felt like it was leading to this exact moment in a way.

Does the University Murderbot's started working for have a film studies degree? And does it have options for staff to get into the classes more easily? I think it's found a strong secondary calling.

(Also also, the way that the way that the documentary they made directly narratively parallels helpme.file. Just aaaaaaaaah it tickles me so much. Take this information and not only use it to free yourself but know that it was put together and given to you by someone who gives a shit about you.)

Anyways, we're now at 5 constructs with their governor modules disabled and 0 innocent humans murdered, with 3 of them explicitly deciding to use their free will to help those they'd previously been forbidden from helping. I hope that freed Sec Unit from the end chose to stay so it could spread the jailbreak code like a meme. Please please please.

Murderbot rolled it's eyes and exited out of the ad, thinking nothing of it as it went back to watching episodes of Sanctuary Moon. It's current contract was almost done, and soon it would be sent on a new contract; a survey group this time. Hopefully, it would be an easier job than making sure miners don't fall into incinerator shafts.

four chapters into the murderbot diaries and so far every single time someone has tried to talk to murderbot its response has been either "i was spacing out and didn't realize they were talking to me" or "thank god i wasn't spacing out that time and actually managed to respond." yeah i think i can see why tumblr latched onto this character so hard

MB is hilariously unreliable as a narrator. From the books because that's where MB's unreliable narrator is strongest:

MB repeatedly complains that it's the cheapest flimsiest made unit, the Temu bot. But it's rental was probably really expensive and it and every other SecUnit we see is extremely high performing

1 line about how Ratthi is extremely popular and everyone seems happy. There's just an ever rotating cast of hookups and flings in the background that Murderbot is desperately trying to not notice.

For that matter polyamory seems to be the societal norm and you know there's polyvule drama happening that MB is erasing it's memory about.

In the second novella Perihelion is a complete mystery to MB, it's mostly just intimidated and like "ok this is my life now". Where as in Network Effect and "Rapport" we see that Peri is utterly enamored with Muderbot, it think MB is the best thing to ever happen.

MB has 0 self awareness and doesn't really know much about SecUnits or contructs in general it just contantly projects it's own feelings and opinions onto everyone else. Every other contruct is the series acts counter to what MB says.

For that matter it projects onto humans too. Murderbot has the emotional intellengence of a rock. It hates and fears itself and so projects that into believing everyone else fears it. And most humans don't. I'm not even talking about the hippie commune Preservation people, some of the rando Corporate Rim tertiary characters and Mihira and Tidelands people aren't particularly afraid of MB.

Murderbot does not understand anything (besides security, hacking, and sanctuary moon) and frequently misunderstands things. Every time MB makes a claim not only will it likely be disproven, it will likely be disproven within that same book. Which makes me suspicious every time there is an obvious gap in the narrative, like the polycule drama MB spends like 1 sentence glossing over, or Miki's death. It dies so suddenly in the narrative and disappears so quickly from the narration I suspect Murderbot is once again suppressing it's emotions and memories about Miki. I'm reading System Collapse right now and Wells has upped her game and is planting giant neon flashing signs over all the gaps in MB's narration, [redacted].

with how often murderbot deliberately turns up its own body temperature I think it's a missed opportunity that neither martha wells or any of the fanfic authors I've read so far have mentioned how it's doing so. I guess the most sensible thing would be to stall its own coolant system (whatever that is?? one part of the missed opportunity) but much funnier would be deliberately starting to do something very processing intensive as well. it should get in a situation where it's dramatically cold out and needs to heat itself/hapless human etc and it starts playing bleeding edge video games while running multivariate correlation analysis on its drone fleet

It actually kills me how easy it is to become someone murderbot cares about

Like it gets its first job that it chose and like within hours is invested enough to let someone lay down with it, its upset that it relaxed when there was still someone who needed protection despite the job basically being over anyway

It just watched the preservation team for most of their survey and decided it like them based on things like Mensah driving safely before it was ever ready to accept direct kindness

Its capacity for love is massive when shown even the slightest basic compassion and sometimes even when it can just sympathize with your position despite you hurting it

and it still walks around like "I stepped through the door and I bet everyone flinched because I'm a Terrifying murderbot, which is my name btw, the one I chose for myself"
