the misinterpretation of you belong with me reminds me a lot of — not to start this discourse again — the misinterpretation of drivers license, with the line about sabrina carpenter. olivia never meant ill will towards sabrina, nor was her mention of sabrina’s blonde hair and older age meant to be taken as shade. it was olivia naming qualities of sabrina’s that she herself doesnt hold to express the insecurity she feels when being compared to someone else who’s of interest to the person she loves. the same can be said for you belong with me, with taylor simply listing off the qualities and behaviors of the other girl — that she’s cheer captain, that she wears high heels and short skirts — that she knows make her appealing & expressing frustration that she doesn’t share those same qualities, but also suggesting that that doesn’t mean she can’t be loved by the boy in question too. how either song about first loves & teenage insecurity was ever turned into some sort of condemned “pick me girl” anthem is beyond me. society just has to demonize everything teenage girls say and do

the lack of a complete standing ovation stung because Taylor always cheers everyone on but also because despite all of her achievements, she literally always genuinely believes everyone else is worthy to win over her and i don’t think a lot of those artists feel that way. you can see it in her reactions to other people’s wins, even when she looks sad and nervous, she’s also still genuinely delighted for them. and hardly anyone ever returns that sentiment to her. she’s taken all the pain she’s been put through and vowed to make sure no one else feels that way in her presence and it just. takes so much fucking strength to do that. she of all people would be justified in having an ego, she would be justified in turning bitter and jaded after everything. but she chooses kindness every moment of her life and that’s fucking hard. i love her heart.
