Got inspired to draw @starozoa 's character Rainy Day being silly with Krysal (and Incher) since they served as inspiration for Krysal's outfit back in the day!
These are some supporting characters in my day-dream story Candy Gravity! Two best friends named Krysal the Pupa and Incher the Caterpillar!
While both of them are explicity in the story as the raincoat-wearing Pupa and super-duper hungry green Caterpillar, over the years I've expanded the designs for their other stages of life as fun scenarios to think about!
Naturally they're part of the vast "Bug" category of people on Planet Reverie. So far I've drawn a few other bug pals like a Butterfly, some Moths, Pupating characters here and there, a silly Centipede obsessed with tidiness, a couple of farmer Beetles, and a worm named Grubert (love that guy)!
Krysal and Incher's primary hangout spot would be in the local park. Picking tasty fruits from the community trees, splashing around in puddles near the pond, and begging to take up teensy odd-jobs from the park's maintenence guy Lotus to get a little pocket money. (Lotus is a pretty pompous and cross guy, but he has a soft spot for Krysal and Incher because they remind him of his siblings from his hometown.)
Although Krysal is still an energy-filled rambunctious kid, being a Pupa they get tuckered out easy and still need to conserve energy for their eventual metamorphosis so they opt to take a lot of breaks to go climb into trees, spin some silk, and just hang around quite literally. When they're up there, Incher will waddle around by himself munching on leaves and dandelions, or perhaps if he's got enough money he'll hit up whatever snack-stand has set up shop in the picnic area!
As a Caterpillar, Krysal was quiet and anxious, but opened up as a Pupa and even went on to become a "social Butterfly" as an adult!
Incher has always had a jaunty step as a Caterpillar and an appetite to match. Once he started Pupating, his energy tanked immensely but still managed to wolf down food like crazy. As a Moth, his appetite leveled out and he took up a culinary career!
If I recall correctly, my initial inspirations for Krysal happened in 2017. Taranza from the Kirby series served as the base idea of a type of insect character, paired alongside a raincoat as an outfit inspired by a character named Rainy Day by @starozoa ! The next year a song called Butterflies by Kacey Musgraves became an earworm for me and I created Krysal's design as a Butterfly at that point.
Incher's concept came out of Gooey from the Kirby series, just being a hungry lil guy of few words following their friend around! I borrowed the general face layout of Gooey. Expanding on the Dark Matter species as a whole, I thought about how in nature, eye mimicry is a thing that exists as a defense mechanism. After seeing a picture of Miracle Matter I wanted to incorporate similar shapes like that all over Incher's head and body!
been working on a big pokemon collage on and off for a few years. gonna be all 46 of the pokemon i used in an ever-revolving team in my pokemon violet playthrough! finished laying down some colors for the "shiny" chunk of the big silly picture so i just wanted to share a lil progress snippet!
An assorted bunch of old and new Candy Gravity doodles from over the years. This hoard of doodles is mostly focused on King Calsum! He's the gentle mentor archetype for the protagonist Gellos (and the rest of the cast).
He's not a king or anything, that's just his first name! Before Gellos crash landed on Planet Reverie, Calsum and his 3 little spirited friends called the Soulees lived by themselves in the manor at the top of the hill. For as long as anyone in town could remember, the 4 of them have always been rather quiet and reclusive only coming out to tend to the flowers around the property, rarely straying too far from the premises.
There isn't a local soul who won't go out of their way to speak highly of Calsum, despite most people never having so much as met him in any capacity. Hardly out of the ordinary though, since he unknowingly (to himself and everyone) radiates a hypnotic energy that leaves everyone who meets him with a propensity to truly be enamored with him. This is truly a terribly dangerous ability for anyone to have as it could fester evils untold... but Calsum manages just fine! He's got a pure heart, through and through.
The day Gellos crash-lands on Planet Reverie, the trio of Ebon the Pallen, Enoki the Mushroom, and Yuvee the Terran find his body in the wreckage of the spaceship Gravity Crasher. Not really knowing what to do, they take the poor misshapen alien to King Calsum. Of course he could fix this problem! Right? Calsum is truly a social miracle worker, and if anyone could be an ambassador for the stars, it would be this prim-and-proper skeleton.
Gellos is the first person that Calsum has ever met in his life that was unable to act kindly to him. Fear, Disgust, Anger, and finally Resignation. These were all the feelings Gellos had been throwing towards Calsum. Even with the language barrier, Gellos's intent was very clear. As each day passed, Calsum would go to bed in utter shock and disbelief as he processed these new and complex feelings he's never had to deal with before. Calsum wasn't about to back down in any capacity and kept a supporting composure, doing his best to make the little alien comfortable as the weeks passed.
Slowly, slowly... Gellos's body outside of the bottle would form into something more mobile. Excitement radiated off of Gellos's regained mobility on a particular day and the pair started understanding each other's words a little bit more. We're they speaking the same language? They're hardly saying things differently and neither feels like they've really learned new words in each other's languages. Perhaps this was due something else that was going on that no parties would be privy to for a long time to come.
Gellos and Calsum would continue to learn more about each other, exchanging little thoughts about interests, culture and philosophies. Gellos has a knack for mechanics while Calsum has a passion for gardening. Gellos drools over memories of his Planet's sugary snacks while Calsum is intent on making nutritious vegetable soups to help alleviate Gellos's new digestion problems. Both of them agreed that maybe wandering outside of the property is a little bit daunting and anxiety inducing... and perhaps it was best to keep Gellos out of sight until he truly felt ready to tackle Planet Reverie's people head on!
Gellos never really had a father (or mother for that matter!) and Calsum never had anybody really get to know him on a personal level besides the Soulees. Both of them were perhaps a little lonely despite having a lot of friends! Over the few months that the blue boy lived at the manor, the duo really got into a groove.
Of course it came as a shock to both of them when Ebon, Enoki, and Yuvee (who would make regular visits) showed up one day to surprise Gellos with a huge present: A newly renovated home down the road. Of course, it wasn't such an unfamiliar sight. They salvaged and repurposed the Gravity Crasher (Gellos already deemed it as unrepairable) into a cute little pad! Gellos cried into Calsum's side for a few reasons. The surprised touched his heart, the sight of the Gravity Crasher made him feel homesick, and the sudden realization that soon he would be moving out of the manor. Calsum reassuringly put his hand onto the cold bottle encasing the blue boy and swayed ever so gently. This wasn't just to comfort Gellos but also to dodge the little bits of sadness coming towards his own heart as well.
Gellos would make strides in personal development as he learned to live a new life on Planet Reverie and researched ways to venture back out into the starry skies one day. Calsum and friends would support him, of course.
