This album is the backdrop for a slice of life animé based on Japanese students I think during WWII. The nervous character on the left comes out of his shell over the course of the school year by adopting a jazz mentality thrust on him by the confident jazz drummer trope on the right. 

Yoko Kanno, the incredible mind behind the seatbelts and the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, curates through this intimate story the recordings of some of my favourite jazz standards played with the beautiful inaccuracy that lies at the very heart of Jazz music.
