A couple of weeks ago I rescued a Canon ImageRunner c1028iF from our Masonic Hall when we started the big refurbishment.
He's a photocopier! A laser printer! A scanner! A fax machine! He's old enough to get drunk and vote inadvisably! I've already printed a few hundred pages on him, and I can see my art practise changing to fit around his abilities.
He sometimes throws up an error message:
It's some kind of colour sensing problem, crucially it's not something that is making itself worse by using it, and there are things I can try before I need to go fishing for components. But, compare that to the results on the official Canon site:
"Turn it off, then back on again. If that doesn't fix it, it will need a service. We won't tell you how to book a service or even how to find a technician who can service it, but in the part of the paragraph where you would logically expect us to tell you how to book a technician's visit, we will instead tell you how to trade in your mostly-functional scanner-copier-printer-fax for a newer model."
Capitalism wants to turn a workhorse machine that will happily run for 20 more years, into e-waste.
