A Different Fate - (Open)
Death, it seemed, was not as still as the young man would have imagined.
Jonathan didn’t quite know what to expect when he suddenly found himself standing before a monitor, with some unusually dressed man before him. He was quite in a daze, really, and one could not blame him. Probably.
Left standing, confusion overwhelming the friendly giant, as he examined the wooden blade he had been gifted.
“A weapon…? Why? … Hello?!”
No answer, of course. Gripping hold of the monitor, he peered inside, and…
What, was he expecting the man to return? … Yes, actually. He even shook it a bit, but to no avail. What sort of strange object was this, anyways…? They didn’t have this back in England, that’s for sure. With his grip becoming loose, Jonathan’s arms fell to his shoulders as he turned, examining the door behind him.
A social experiment, they said? Would things be dangerous? As if the thought of danger really scared him— but he best be prepared. Unfortunately for Jonathan, he was anything but prepared.
Exiting the stark white room, Jonathan again was met with confusion, as he stood there, overwhelmed by the sights of giant skyscrapers and the like— the steel jungle before him so bizarre to the man.
“What is this?!” Jonathan cried as he stepped forward, staring in awe. “I’ve never seen buildings so big before! How—”
Having been speaking rather loudly, Jonathan had just noticed the stares he had been receiving from the people surrounding him, all dressed in such strange attire compared to his get-up.
He was two centuries too late to fully grasp what was going on. However, he knew, at the very least, he was causing a scene. Clearing his throat, the young nobleman proclaimed, “I’m sorry for yelling. Could any of you help me, please? I don’t know where I am…”
… Unfortunately, it seemed as if most people were ignoring the giant man, as they continued onward to whatever destination they had. All of them, except you, anyways.
How long had it been already? Josuke had lost track of how much time he'd spent inside Hive City, but at this point, it seemed well....pointless, to keep counting. It didn't seem as though they were going to get out of the city anytime soon. Though he couldn't really say he was already used to being here, he was starting to become more comfortable with the idea.
So far, life here was a bit more productive than it was back in Morioh. At least he had a job! Well, really that was the only thing. He missed his friends and his mom, but his job was keeping him busy at least, and he was learning. But having Crazy Diamond as one of the few sentient beings that would listen to him was just depressing.
Today, his goal as he made his way into the city was to meet someone new and make some friends. Surely that would make his life in Hive City much easier, and definitely much more enjoyable. So far....the mission hadn't gone so well. He hadn't found anyone worth talking to, or that looked very friendly. This was just weird! Josuke wasn't used to being so socially awkward!
A loud voice from nearby caught his attention, and he turned around to find the source. Eyes widened once he saw the rather large man it came from. Somehow the voice didn't suit him.
“Yeah man, what's up? Did you just get here or something?”
“Well, I'll tell you what I do know, and that's that we're in Hive City, and we're stuck here till further notice. Totally not great, huh?”
“Ayayaya, we’ll see about that!”
She considered it a challenge— offering a quick laugh alongside the boy. Anyways, her curiosity was piqued upon Josuke’s next comment.
“Morioh, is it?” This is the first she’s heard of any place from the Outside World in centuries. “Hm… to be honest, I don’t! There’s only one real school in the human settlement in my home, and it’s mostly for kids. … Then again,” She snickers, “I have no real idea as to what school is for you humans. I’ve never gone to such a thing to begin with.”
It was strange, when she thought about it, how she got along with the humans here so well. Aside from her typically straightforward and charming personality, Aya acted very much human.
Well, all youkai did. In particular, though, one might say the tengu had just a bit more… finesse in that area. It was something worth taking pride in.
“Ahh, did I mention? I’m a tengu. I figured it’s obvious enough that I’m not human, what with these,” Aya exclaimed— glancing at her wings for a moment, “But yeah. I wouldn’t know how the reporters where you live work. If I find something interesting, I’ll go and ask about it! That’s pretty much how I work, honestly. And I just happened to find you this time around— not like I regret it.”
Josuke laughed even more as Aya did. She had a very particular laugh, one that wasn't very common, and honestly one that he found funny, but not in a rude way. It was endearing.
He raised an eyebrow as she mentioned a “human” settlement. She kept talking, but Josuke had stuck on that one part of what she'd said. Why had she felt the need to mention the word human? Weren't they all humans here? And then she finally clarified it. She was a tengu.
Josuke stared at her for a few seconds, eyes narrowing as he did so. What in the hell was a tengu? He was sure this was something he had learned in school once, but he couldn't remember. Oh. Those wings were actually...real. He'd thought they were some sort of cosplay thing, so he hadn't bothered to comment on them.
He still hadn't said anything, not sure if he should be weirded out or what, considering where he was and the sort of situation he was in. And then--
“Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!”
“You're a tengu? Not a human?! I mean, I don't even know what that is but whaaaaat!”
16 Years [Open]
At least Josuke wasn’t too bothered by Samson, thought Filia. The Parasite’s unruly behavior scared away more than a few people, both for better and for worse. Unpleasant people were easy to scare off, but sometimes people she actually wanted to talk to got shooed away too. But Josuke didn’t seem to find Samson intimidating, only annoying. It was kind of funny, in a way, especially if Samson didn’t like it.
“Well, maybe it’s just me, but most people don’t stay around long enough to get to know him in the first place,” she said, reaching up to curl a lock of hair around her finger.
“There’re people I like!” snapped Samson. ”What about Jack, huh? Did you forget about him?”
“Oh, well, that’s one…” said Filia, nodding. “See Josuke? He just acts tough, but he’s really a big softie!”
“Shut up! I am not!” Samson reached down to squish the girl’s cheeks, growling. “You’re one to talk about bein’ soft, ya little brat.”
The girl swatted away the Parasite’s tentacles, whining. “Samsonnnnnn!” Looking at them, you’d never guess all the horrible things they’d seen and been through together. And one would never think that Samson was actually a mean-spirited psychopath.
With Samson’s limbs still balled up in her fists, Filia smiled up at Josuke again. “Yeah! I’m turning 17! Or, is it 16…? I guess it doesn’t really matter…”
“Eh, only a year apart. Who’s gonna know?”
Filia nodded, finally releasing the Parasite, who drew his tendrils back with a grateful sigh. “I guess. But you can’t just refuse a gift like that!” she said, pointing at Josuke. “That’s how Birthdays work, right? If a friend wants to do something nice for you, you shouldn’t refuse!”
Luckily, Josuke was spared from the girl’s lecture by the arrival of the promised pancakes. Filia’s eyes widened as they were set down in front of her, nose wiggling as she savored the smell. Already her mouth was beginning to water, and she lifted the first bite to her mouth-
“Hey, that’s pretty good stuff!” said Samson, chewing on the morsel he’d snatched.
“S-Samsonnnn!” The girl quickly cut another piece, making sure the Parasite didn’t snatch this one. And when she finally did put it in her mouth-
Filia frowned. She chewed, swallowed, and frowned. “It’s okay, I guess.” So much for that.
Josuke laughed a little, the atmosphere between the two—three--settling into something much more comfortable. He never really thought he'd be in a place like this, sitting across from a cute girl, and he really never thought that said cute girl would have talking hair, but hey, you had to just make do with what you had, right?
“Yeah clearly dude's just a big ol' teddy bear.”
It really was kind of cute, in an odd way, to see how the two interacted. It was definitely something the likes of which Josuke had never seen before. It was like having your best friend attached to your head, though he didn't think that he would ever want to have Okuyasu stuck to his head. He'd probably lose brain cells that way.
“Eh? You don't know how old you're turning? What's up with that?”
He quirked an eyebrow as he leaned forward in his seat. It dawned on him then that they had been here for about an hour, and he still didn't know much about Filia or Samson besides their names. He figured that information would come out in time however, and didn't worry himself too much about it. He put his hands up defensively when Filia started pointing at him, beads of sweat rolling down the side of his face.
“Fine fine! I got it! You can give me all the presents you want, I won't complain!”
There was no time to complain once the pancakes arrived. They looked delicious – a short stack of fluffy buttermilk pancakes covered in whipped cream, ice cream, and sprinkles. He failed to see the “birthday” part of the happy birthday pancakes, but once again, he wasn't going to complain. Josuke dug in himself, mouth wide open in a grin which disappeared once the food went into his mouth. He swallowed it, but afterwards, looked up at Filia with a heartbroken expression.
“...these pancakes are shit.”
hi i'm afraid of the masterlist so please follow peacock!! thank u friends
“I couldn’t really imagine what you’d look like without it, Higashikata-san. Of course, this is the first we’ve met anyways,” Aya laughs pleasantly— cheeks turning a tad rosy as she’s thus thanked.
What a weird sensation, being thanked for listening to a story… most times, Aya was thanked for not being anywhere in the vicinity of any stories! … Admittedly, it was a pretty nice feeling, and it made her smile rather pleasantly too.
“Ayayaya… you don’t have to thank me. It’s just my job, you know? … But, I appreciate it,” She exclaimed warmly, fully meaning it.
It was nice being thanked for something as trivial as that. … This kid, Josuke, was a pretty kind guy. Aya respected that kindness greatly. It’s not every day she received it, after all.
“And yeah! You’ll love it. With my writing and your tale, no doubt it’ll impress the inhabitants of the Hive!” This wasn’t a lie— she was just pretty damn sure.
"Don't even imagine it, it's not like you're ever gonna see it!"
Another hearty laugh as Josuke crossed his arms. It was true though. There were few people in the world that had ever seen him with his hair not in a pompadour, and he wasn't about to change that. It was his signature hairstyle, and no one needed to know how ridiculous he looked with his hair down.
"It's really cool to have the story be in a newspaper, y'know. I've never been interviewed or anything like that. In Morioh, no one really cares about a kid from the local school, you get me?"

Ask the character/mun: Ask the muse whatever you want for them to answer IC; or ask the mun a personal question to get to know better or to get an OOC answer [although we would like to keep these at a minimum]!
Truth/Dare: Be reasonable with the dares! If you start getting ridiculous no one will want to do them; characters aren’t really obligated to do all the dares they receive. Don’t forget about the truth part as well!
Situation: Give the character another character or characters, a place and a reason in order to create some interesting thread ideas (if both parties are willing to do it that is)! For example: You could send an ask to Ventus saying: “Roxas, Sector oo6, clothes shopping”.
Headcanon: Anons send the character a word, or a name and you may write a small/long headcanon about said word!
Drabbles: Give the muse a prompt and they may write a short drabble on it.

Josuke splurges on clothing. He will pay 50 dollars for socks if they are designer and he likes them. He doesn't care what people think because he works hard for the money he uses on his designer clothing, and it's not something he does often. When he does however, he won't shut up about it, cause he'll just be so happy.
18: Favorite beverage?
Probably strawberry milkshakes. Yeah, let's go with that.
22: Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?
Maybe a couple of idle doodles, that or a paper airplane. Nothing very special really.

"We're WHAT"
jojo meets giogio!! || closed/giorno
“You must be rather far removed family members, then,” said Giorno, frowning slightly. “I happened to find my birth father here in the city. I’d never met him before. It was an… interesting meeting.”
‘Interesting’ was putting it lightly. He decided not to bore Josuke with details like his father’s vampirism or his apparent hatred of the Joestar family. Little details like that could come later.
Josuke noticed Giorno’s convenient omission of information, but the younger boy only raised an eyebrow. “It’s a personal preference, signore. If you want to tell me about your Stand, that’s fine. If you don’t, then don’t. I don’t tell my Stand ability to people I’ve only just met, even if we happen to be on good terms. Better safe than sorry, no?
“And while I’m touched that you would tell me your Stand power so quickly,” and there was definitely a smirk as he said those words, “I’m afraid I don’t trust quite so easily. No hard feelings, eh amico?”
“Yeah, I guess. I mean to be honest, I couldn't even tell you how we're related, cause I have no idea. I'm just kinda assuming...based off what he told me. It's complicated.”
Josuke raised an eyebrow as he watched Giorno's demeanor change a bit upon mention this meeting with his birth father. Was that something else they had in common too? Awkward relationships with their birth fathers...Josuke could definitely understand what that was like.
“I bet. Spare me the details, but trust me, I feel you.”
The tone of the conversation shifted once Josuke noticed Giorno refused to reveal his Stand to him. That only made him all the more suspicious. Had he just made a grave mistake in showing him Crazy Diamond, and in telling him about Gappy? He still didn't know if this guy was friend or foe, and now, he was even less sure!
“Safe than sorry my ass. That's what I should be saying. How the hell am I supposed to know if I can trust you?”
A little late for that, but Josuke felt it was still worth stating.
16 Years [Open]
Samson continued to give Josuke dirty looks from his spot atop Filia’s head, tendrils roiling in irritation. His movement gave Filia’s hair the appearance of an oil spill, slick and foreboding.
The menu was still more interesting to Filia than whatever fights Samson was getting into, and she continued to read through it, only glancing up when Josuke spoke again. “Huh? Oh, well, you really shouldn’t let the things he says bother you, he’s like that to everyone.”
“What? No I ain’t! I’m only like that to freaks and annoyin’ people, I’m usually a pretty friendly guy!” snapped Samson.
“Name three people you’re nice to,” said Filia, not looking up.
“Well, there’s you, and then there’s… uh… It don’t matter! I got lotsa friends! Shut up!”
Samson growled and settled back into his spot as Filia giggled. “It’s fine, really,” she said, looking up at Josuke. “He’s a bit… rough around the edges, but nice when you get to know him, really.” The Parasite only growled in response.
Her eyes lit up when Josuke finally placed the order. She didn’t even know what birthday pancakes entailed, but how could it possibly be bad? And a milkshake to go with it, truly, Josuke was a man after her own heart.
“Well, it’s my Birthday,” she said, eyes following the waitress into the kitchen. “And we’re celebrating that, so it’s okay. But if we’re still here when your Birthday comes around, we can come back! And we’ll pay for it!”
“Hey now, let’s not go throwin’ pearls before swine, kid. Not like we got a lotta money to spend,” said Samson.
Filia frowned, but smiled again just as quickly. “It’s for a friend, so it’s worth it, right?”
Josuke noticed Samson's mean mugging, but he chose to ignore it. However,
the way he moved atop of Filia's head was a little unsettling, but he chose to ignore that too. He had better things to pay attention to, like Filia.
He laughed a bit as Samson and Filia argued in front of him, only laughing more when Filia won the argument. He rested his elbow on the table, leaning his chin on his hand as he continued to speak to Filia.
“Yeah, I can tell. I don't know about the nice once you get to know him part, I think he just likes you and no one else. But whatever right?”
He shrugged. He figured he'd get used to Samson's presence eventually. He'd have to if he wanted to continue being friends with Filia. He couldn't help but wonder how annoying it must be to have another entity with you at all times, especially one so disagreeable. But Filia's positive nature and bright smile were contagious, and she didn't seem to mind it, so that was good. Upon hearing that it was actually her birthday, his eyes widened a bit.
“What, really? Seriously? It's actually your birthday? Then shit, I guess we ordered something really fitting!”
Josuke laughed again, only to stop suddenly when she offered to buy him food for his birthday as well. A light blush spread across his cheeks – never had a girl offered to buy him food, and it was a nice change of pace, if not a bit embarassing.
“Y-You don't have to do that, really! I appreciate the thought though!”
He waved his hands in front of him, chuckling nervously. Good thing the food was right around the corner.
“Never saw him again… a mysterious ending for such a fantastic tale… a bit depressing too, but…”
After a few moments, she closes the notebook in her hands and looks back up with a bright expression on her face. “That was perfect! This interview will make for a great article, I’m sure, Higashikata-san. Maybe it’ll inspire some other humans to adopt a similar style? Hmm, who knows…”
Having idly allowed the fact that she wasn’t human to slip (the tengu had figured by now that the kid realized she wasn’t quite human, what with those wings of her), Aya crossed her arms after sliding that notebook of hers in to the belt she wore.
“You have my thanks. Normally I’m not so grateful, but considering you’re my first interviewee in this place, you’re no doubt a great contribution to my soon-to-be newspaper! And for that, I’m thankful.”
"Yeah, it's real depressing, but what can you do, right? That's life!"
Josuke chuckled a bit as he placed his hands in his pockets, turning his gaze upwards to the sky momentarily. He really wished he could see that guy again. At least learn his name, or how he's doing, but it all seemed so impossible. He didn't mind it too much - he could live just knowing that he'd done him a good honor throughout his life with his hairstyle.
"I don't know if anyone could pull it off as good as I can." Another laugh as he pulled a comb out of his pocket, then ran it through his hair.
"Hey, I gotta thank you too! Not a lot of people ever really bother to listen to my story, so I don't really tell it much. I can't wait to read the newspaper!"
Heh, she figured it’s not like this guy would truly know what a samurai was like anyways. He was a bit too young to have that sort of knowledge, she figured. … All of the people she was meeting in the Hive from Japan seemed to be from the modern generation, now that she thought about it— and she knew little of how things worked outside of Japan…
Perhaps this was one of the few good reasons for being here. It was… something of an eye opening experience to the tengu.
As such, instead of being stumped when Josuke would mention this ‘car’ object, Aya now had a relative idea as to what it was. They helped humans move faster, right? Not as fast as flying, but hey, some things couldn’t be helped.
… As for a hospital… that must be somewhere you go when you’re sick? She knew of doctors, but… it’s not like hospitals existed back in Gensokyo, either.
“Wow… what a respectable guy,” Aya mutters thoughtfully, finding it impressive for such generosity under such conditions.
Had humans changed? … No, no. Even now, there were good humans about. Still, though…
“So he really did save your life… that’s wonderful, Higashikata-san. What about the man, though? Did you ever see him again?”
She was just about finished writing, and her seriousness had diminished a tad as the conversation kept on flowing. … Even if it was an interview, she didn’t make it awkward. That was a rather special ‘skill’ she had.
Josuke smiled, thinking back on the story. Many times he'd been told that his way to honor the man was stupid, but he really didn't see it as such. To insult his hair was to insult that man's honor, and he certainly wouldn't allow that!
"You're telling me. So in honor of that, I wear his hairstyle. Plus it's pretty damn stylish. I don't care what people think about it, but I don't let people talk shit about it."
"...No, I never saw him again. I never even found out who he was. That's the only bad part of the story."
“Just about, yeah! And if not, you’ll set a precedent for all those other guys with this story of yours!”
Aya was already scribbling away— keeping track of their conversation word for word. Or, at the very least, she’d wait until he was finished talking and pause for a moment to finish writing. … Good thing Aya wrote fast.
And cute, too. But it’s not like you were going to read what she was writing—
“I see, I see… you’re quite an honorable guy, Higashikata-san! I can respect that. Almost like a samurai— or well, the samurai that weren’t sleazy, anyways.”
Finishing writing for a second, she glances back at her paper before once more looking at Josuke and speaking— almost instantly starting to write again.
“Higashikata-san,” Aya begins, addressing Josuke once more. “Let’s start with what I’m sure everyone would want to know— myself included.”
Aya eyes the boy with a cunning look, full of interest.
“How did this man save your life?”
Josuke was blushing! To call him honorable, well that was just--he laughed a bit as he rubbed the back of his head, his cheeks tinting pink as he did so. But he couldn't let this go to his head, he had something more important at hand here!
"Ah geez, I wouldn't say I'm like a samurai, no way am I that great! Well I'm guessing they were pretty great, I don't actually pay attention in history."
He laughed again, stopping only when he saw how serious Aya became and remembered that he needed to get to the story. He cleared his throat, and began to tell it again.
"When I was a kid, one night, I got this really bad fever, yeah? So my mom wanted to take me to the hospital, but we were in the middle of this huge blizzard! She tried anyway of course but our car got stuck!"
"Then, right as all hope seemed to be lost, this dude shows up with a pomp and takes his jacket off, even though it was freezing and puts it under the tire, helping us out! We managed to get to the hospital just fine. If it wasn't for him, I woulda been done for!"
