Finral, about Langris: I'm just saying, considering his messed-up childhood and the way he was raised, he could've turned out a lot worse.
Vanessa: You're right, Finral. Let's go find him and give him a medal. The "Not As Much Of A Jerk As You Could Have Been" award.
I like Langris as a character already, but- CHAPTER 305, just makes me smile. I like this chapter cuz of Langris
The fact Yuno egged on Langris, who is a sore loser, but is only really said to be at the end of the chapter, so that Langris could hold off Zenon for 3 minutes,
The fact it worked immediately on Langris,
Yuno eggs him on again, and Langris thinks about how it's that competitiveness that makes their squad strive to be better,
And we see it happen in this chapter with Langris.
Langris is strong enough that we never really see him get hurt (only other instances are VS Asta, and Finral w/ Yami and Jack), but here, he knows he can't beat Zenon on his own and gets run through like this;
He's in pain, and maybe that's unfamiliar to him. He always passes out fast when he does get hurt (a drag in the stomach, a punch to the face), and is gritting his teeth here.
But he plants his feet and keeps going.
He's competitive and annoyed by Zenon looking down on him. He gets run through again, he screams through coughing out his own blood, and he expresses his pride in the Golden Dawn.
I could end it there, but this is similar to something he did waaay back around his first debut; he had shown pride in being the Vice-Captain of the Golden Dawn (Ch. 79).
This is the exact same position he acknowledges Yuno of being worthy of in Ch. 305.
Both times the position of the Golden Dawn's Vice-Captain had been brought up, 1) Langris was annoyed by Yuno, 2) Yuno was challenging Langris. The first time, he was defending Asta and stating his own goal, and the second time was a direct challenge to Langris to improve himself / go beyond his limits.
The first time, Yuno had even mentioned the preconceived limits for himself that Langris brings up; "there's no rules saying commoners can't become Wizard King".
Langris is so open with his thoughts and I like that about him. He always says them, and he was always competitive. He always wanted to show he was better than Finral, so it could stem from there; but he just acknowledged Yuno as the Vice-Captain of the strongest squad.
He acknowledges Yuno as his equal, when Langris has always wanted to be the stronger person.
And Yuno acknowledges that Langris is the same as him too; in the sense of being very sore losers. The thing fueling both of them right now, and a mutual acknowledgment that they're very alike.
"The Golden Dawn is a badly written squa-"

To me, they are my precious children. I love all of them.

Whenever Langris is in a destructive mood, the only one that can freely walk towards him without getting killed is Finral.
Finral: Oh, fiddlesticks. Langris: Look, I understand this is a tense situation, but let's watch the fucking language.
Langris, quietly: I love and appreciate everything you do.
Finral: What?
Langris, loud: I SAID I LOATHE AND HATE EVERYTHING YOU DO
Langris: You fuckers don’t know about my knife stick. It’s a knife taped to a stick and it’s the ultimate weapon. Finral: Spear. Langris: BLOCKED.
I think William falls into the same category as Finral and Lolopechka—too kind to be able to learn offensive spells.
William is always called kind by everyone around him. By Julius, by Yuno, even Patri acknowledges that William is different. Zenon calls him a fool for prioritizing others rather than himself
(Ch. 79)
(Ch. 143)
(Ch. 263)
William berates himself for his kindness (indecision between elves and humans), and Zenon calls him out as an idiot for his kindness too. But William then defends this, because Zenon insults the people who showed kindness toward William.
William can take insults. But he won't let Zenon talk down the others.
(Ch. 166)
If you look closer at William's spells, none of them are offensive. He can heal, he can bind, but they aren't full-on offensive.
When he dealt with Broccos (Ch. 77), he just used his magic according to its nature—trees need nutrients to feed on. Being trees made of magic, mana becomes obvious as a source of energy to them.
It wasn't a direct offensive spell, it was literally him growing a tree and using a person as the source. He does this earlier in Kiten too, using people's magic power in his vicinity to fuel his big tree.
Like Lolopechka, he could make things out of his magic that were intended for offense. She could make knight dolls, but could only make them look like they were attacking. William learned to make a sword out of his magic, but never used it himself until Lucius.
And really, is taking a sword and stabbing someone the same as an offensive magic spell in a grimoire? It was a matter of Creation Magic, and even Lolopechka could technically make soldiers, but couldn't be like Princia.
Whenever William uses his magic to beat an opponent, he just immobilizes them. His roots or vines move toward the target, and he technically wins via binding or draining their magic power afterwards.
Like Lolopechka, his spells look like attacks, but aren't actually that. William has incredible magic control, and his stats show it as a 5 (the highest it can go).
In the defending of Kiten, William did a huge spell—and he left no property damage. He didn't destroy any buildings. Look at the difference between how the spell was received, to the Diamond mages and the Clover citizens.
(Ch. 76 - 77)
The only people who were hurt by William's magic were Diamond mages; Clover citizens were completely fine and left alone. For example, Asta, Langris, Yuno, Charmy, and Finral, weren't impeded by the tree at all. It clears out around them.
In the 2 images above, Yuno is left alone despite the tree having grown heavily toward him. The Diamond mages were clearly picked out from where they were mixed with Clover citizens.
The people who destroyed the area were Diamond mages, and people like Yuno and Langris. There's no explicit showing of William himself actually destroying buildings or hurting civilians (I'm going based off the manga, I don't know if this proves the same in the anime).
Since William doesn't have clear offensive spells, and the nature of his magic is more protection (bulky, strong wood), that's probably a reason he put Langris as Vice-Captain (other than him being the vessel for Patri's cousin). Langris has offensive magic. He can deal with what William lacks, which is pure offensive power.
In summary,
William has great magic control, and he uses that to not hurt people or damage things unnecessarily
His magic only looks like attacks, something Lolopechka also does
When on the topic of William, everyone always points out how kind William is
With the earlier points, I think William is too kind to be able to learn offensive magic
Mister shyboy
William: Walks into his office "Why are you sitting at my desk?"
Reader: "I’m the captain now."
William: Sits across from them, amused "Oh? What orders will you give?"
Reader: Pauses "...I hadn’t thought that far ahead."
William:Â I drink to forget but I always remember. Yuno:Â You're drinking orange juice.
idk if this has been done yet. Coughs
