Makoto jumped at the shrill sound of his ringtone. A bird fluttered inside his ribcage when he saw who sent the message. Curious, Asahi and Kisumi peered at his phone screen.

Asahi gasped. “Nanase Haruka? Like… Nanase Haruka?”

“Wow, are you hanging out with him?” Kisumi’s eyes were wide and gleaming with interest.

Makoto blinked. “You know him?”

“Of course we do!” exclaimed Asahi.

“They say he’s really good in the sack.” Kisumi wiggled his eyebrows.  

The fluttering bird in Makoto’s ribcage was shot dead and fell to his feet. “Says who?”

Asahi and Kisumi looked at each other. “Everyone.”

Makoto slid his glass across him, closer to Haruka. “Do you want to swap?”

Haruka looked up at him. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, it’s okay, Haru.” Makoto smiled. “You can have mine.”

“Thanks.”

Haruka wondered why Natsuya and Nao fell silent. Then, he found them sharing a knowing look, grinning.

Natsuya chuckled, “You still spoil him. Nothing has changed!”

Haru is just very passionate with his goals in life.

I like to think that haru was a very strange and trouble making kind of baby lol….I enjoyed making this comic a little too much..

Makoto and Haru are both interested in nutritional science huh. Makoto still goes to a different university from Haru yet they’re both thinking of taking up the same thing. Are they both planning to start a business in the future or something? As a sort of fallback plan? 

IIRc one of them was interested in sitting in with other classes (i think Haru). They just want to be together all the time. Will Haru be going to sit in nutritional science classes in Makoto’s school? What a power couple move lol.

look at this and tell me that haru doesn’t look like a jealous boyfriend. sure, you can get jealous when your bestfriend gets too close to someone else. but taking your bestfriend by the hand???? c’mon now.

That scene in Free! Dive to the future in which Haru pulls Makoto into the pool with him is so beautiful and meaningful. The way I see it, Haru’s gesture could mean something like it’s better with you, I need you. Basically, what Makoto verbally told to him more than once (those “it’s meaningless without you” or “there’s no point if you’re not with me”), Haru genuinely shows with this gesture. They’re so natural and lighthearted… It seems like they actually belong together. Now, sure as hell I’m overreading things, but interpretation is allowed, isn’t it?

Plus, a few minutes before Makoto arrives, Haru is alone in the water remembering what he used to think about in the past. Precisely, he’s having this inner monologue: “There was one other thing I used to think about a lot… If I’m a prodigy at ten and a genius at fifteen, after I hit twenty I’ll be…” and at this exact point his thoughts are interrupted by this:

Okay, now do whatever you want with it, but you can’t deny there’s something subtle about this scene. The exact moment Haru’s thoughts focus on the uncertainty of the future, Makoto appears. The way I see it (and, as always, it’s just my interpretation, so take my words with a grain of salt) is that Makoto is a constant reminder that there will always be someone for whom Haru means a lot more than just his abilities as a swimmer on the world stage. Swimming is very important for both of them, yet they were friends even before they started swimming, they were friends when they stopped swimming. Their relationship has always existed independently of literally all the rest and always will.

If Season 3 didn’t convince you that Kyoani holds this pair in highest regard as their No.1 un-official otp for the series, you’re either in denial, homophobic or living under a rock. Kyoani has always kept the MH vs RH debate going from the start, knowing it fueled fan fever, but by the end of S2, a decision was made and a new director brought on board. From 2014 onward, the media produced reflected three top pairs: Makoharu, Sourin and Reigisa. Ships exist in many configurations and while I respect all, I love Kyoani’s choices.
